Computer Very Slow

Unread postby tbziegler » January 19th, 2010, 3:17 pm

Laptop use to be fast and now has gotten very slow. I have Norton anti-virus running. When turning on computer from the beginning, it takes more than 4 minutes to load the system tray programs. It then is very slow to load any selected programs. After the computer is on for a while (15 minutes) it is faster. I have been just putting it to Stby when I am finished with it, because it saves some time to become usable again. I can not think of a specific thing that happened or that I loaded that triggered the slow down. Thank You in advance. I appreciate your time and expertice.

Hi,

First,
Discussion.
I noticed there is a sign of ComboFix running previously on your system.
Did you get any help on the 2010-01-07 or you're running self-fixes?

Next,
Content of the log.
  • Copy the code as below by higlight > right click > copy:
    Code: Select all
    C:\ComboFix.txt
  • Click on start > Run....
  • Paste the code into the box and click OK.
  • The file will be open. Copy and paste the content in your next reply.

Next,
Check Disk.
  • Copy the code as below by higlight > right click > copy:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
  • Click on start > Run....
  • Paste the code into the box and click OK.
  • A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
  • Please post the contents of checkhd.txt (On the desktop).

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • Response to our discussion
  • Content of ComboFix.txt
  • Content of checkhd.txt

Hi,

Here is an advice :
You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper. Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer.

***Important note for the next instruction :
Sometimes this process could take very long time to finish depending on the numbers of files/folders.
Do NOT interrupt this session. Again, please provide checkhd.txt for my review purpose.

Next,
Check Disk (Fix).
  • Copy the code as below by higlight > right click > copy:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: /F
  • Click on Start > Run....
  • Paste the code into the box and click OK.
  • You will get a message to schedule the volume to be checked in the next reboot.
  • Please answer Y.
  • Type exit to close the Command window.
  • Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Restart
  • It will scan again and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
It's possible that the chkdsk c: /F sequence may have to be run on reboot twice to pick up everything.

Next,
Enter the windows environment.

Next,

  • Content of checkhd.txt

Ran programs. It took 16 hours to complete step 4 of CHKDSK. Computer is still slow. 3min 30sec to get to log in screen then another 1min 30sec to get windows background desktop. Internet took 2 min more. Closed internet then opened again - took 1 min. Third time was normal at 10 sec. Hard drive light on almost continuously for first 10 min. Sorry.
