The actual improvement may only be marginal though and or you may wish to consider installing more memory:-

To upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a small scanner(CrucialScan.exe)which is perfectly safe to download and run. Which will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

I've actually been thinking about getting more memory for a while, even before I thought the computer was infected with something. Thank you for letting me know about the scanner - I wasn't sure how to know if my system could take more memory. I think that my IT people at work would be willing to help me install it if that's the route I decide to go down.

I also wouldn't mind removing the resources that you mentioned. Can you send me those instructions when you have a chance?

You're welcome! You do not have to necessarily order the new memory modules from Cruical but merely use their scanner as a guideline to what your machine is able to support then make a note and you might be able to purchase them cheaper from a local IT Store. By all means ask the IT Techs at work, as not many people realise when installing such you need too observe a anti-static protocol. Otherwise you may corrupt/damage them during installation and in turn have wasted good money.

By all means as follows:-

Right-click on HiJackThis.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Then select Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

Hello! I apologize for the long response time; I think I have actually gone over my 72 hours. I have completed your instructions. Overall, I think the computer is running much faster than it was when we first started.

I still have not run the scanner from crucial, but plan to do that next so I can see about the memory. In the meantime, I have used hijack this to check and fix the files you suggested. My new hijackthis log is in the next file.

Hello! I apologize for the long response time; I think I have actually gone over my 72 hours. I have completed your instructions. Overall, I think the computer is running much faster than it was when we first started.
Not a problem and pleased to learn your computer has improved performance.

Please read through this topic again and perform all the recommended system maintenance again before proceeding to the step below, thank you.

Next:

I would like you to install Vista Service Pack 1 as follows. This will increase both overall system security and stability:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb) >> All Programs >> Windows Update.
  • In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
  • After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
  • Click to select the check box for Windows Vista SP1 only, then click Install.
  • When completed Reboot(restart) your computer if not prompted to do so.


When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • A new HijackThis Log. <-- Remember to right-click on HijackThis and select Run as Administrator.

Hello again,

I've run into a small glitch with installing Vista SP1, in that it doesn't appear as an update to install. I did some very brief investigating of this, and I see on the Microsoft website that this can occur when your computer runs in a corporate environment. Is it possible that I can't see the SP because my computer is linked with the university? I know that this does affect how I check for updates (ie - right now settings for my windows updates are managed by my system administrator), so I wondered if this was the case for SP1 as well.

I saw there were other reasons on the Microsoft website, although my cursory examination did not show that I had any of them.

Re what you have mentioned, I think in that case it would be best you inform the IT Tech's at the University that you have been advised the system requires updating to Vista Service Pack 1 at least. By all means show them this topic.

I think this would be prudent as there are other methods we could utilise but they may break/interfere with the software installed so you are able to connect to the University's network.

Any other issues remaining before we clean up the tools used and I provide some online safety advice.

Sorry, false alarm. After I had downloaded the current "important" security updates and then rebooted, and then again downloaded another important security update and rebooted again, SP1 was available to download. So it apparently needed the other two security updates to be downloaded first, before it became available. It is downloading now, and so as soon as it is done, I can report back again.

Hi. :)

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well. Plus bare in mind my prior advice about upgrading the presently installed RAM(Random Access Memory).

Help! My computer is slow!

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Download/Run OTC:

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.

This tool will remove all the tools(and logs created) we used to clean your pc. Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCl attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Reset the System Restore points:

Create a new, clean System Restore point:-

  • Right click on Computer and select Properties > System protection. > Create.
  • Give this restore point a descriptive name and click Create.
  • When done, click Apply >> OK.

Note: Do not clear infected/old System Restore points before creating a new System Restore point first!

Flush infected System Restore points:-

  • Right click on Computer and select Properties > System protection.
  • (untick) Vista C system box an click Turn off system restore then Apply >> OK.
  • Restart your computer.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed combination security application, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Keep your system updated:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb) >> All Programs >> Windows Update.
  • In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
  • After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
  • Click to select the check box for any found, then click Install.
  • When completed Reboot(restart) your computer if not prompted to do so.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice is avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.
