Help! Malware trying to get my credit card info!!!

I use IE8 on Win XP service pack 3 and a router to get to internet. Within the last couple of weeks everytime I go to my bank or other website that requires me to login a window pops up that requests that I enter my credit card, expiration date, zip, etc and will not let me continue unless I enter valid information which I have not done.

Please help.

I'm afraid I have some bad news for you.

There is evidence of an infection on your computer that is a Password Stealer with remote access (backdoor) functionality.

These types of infection log your keystrokes, steal personal information and allow the remote control of your computer to steal critical system information and download and execute files

I would advise you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately, get to a known clean computer and change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.

It would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. As you have already stated you use the PC for online financial purposes, the only responsible course of action I can advise is for you to reformat your computer and reinstall windows, backing up any personal files and important data before you do.

Some advice for when you reformat:

Clean Install Windows XP

Back up any personal files or documents you wish to save before you reformat. (photo's, e-mails etc). Some tutorials that may help are:
XP Backup Using NTBackup Backup or Restore Wizard
How to backup and restore your data using Cobian Backup

After formatting the HDD and reinstalling the OS, Install an antivirus, straight away before connecting to the internet. Have the installer file for your chosen AV handy on a form of removable media (Flash Drive/CD etc) if at all possible.

Once you have installed an AV and when you connect to the internet, check for updates for your AntiVirus straight away and then make getting Windows updates a priority.

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.

• Update Non-Microsoft Programs
  Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
