Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

I appreciate your help. None of the logs seemed overly long, so I didn't zip any of them.
Thanks,

Zach

Unread postby Blade81 » January 7th, 2010, 11:10 am

Hi Zach,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi again,

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.2) here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Uninstall vulnerable Flash versions by following instructions here. Fresh version can be obtained here.

Uninstall these vulnerable Javas:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner as instructed in the screenshot here.

Post back its report & a fresh dds log. How's the system running?

Re: search engine redirector

Unread postby zachg2 » January 11th, 2010, 4:43 pm

My posts are below, but you asked how the system is running. I'm trying to get this drive clean so that I can move all the files to the larger drive I just added. It's been slow and nothing has improved yet. Don't misunderstand that as to mean I'm anything but appreciative for your help.

I do have a question though. I was first attacked by the "Antivirus Pro" malware and was able to find enough info online to be able to remove it. That was when I downloaded MalwareBytes, Super Antispyware, Spybot, Avast, Registry Booster, and CCleaner. Since then I've also downloaded Hijack this. However, as you can see with the Kapersky scan, I've still got 3 infected files...

I now understand that no one product is going to fully protect me, but am I overlapping in coverage and making any of these things "fight" with each other? Is there a place that recommends or rates these programs? What's your preference?

Thank you again,

Zach

Re: search engine redirector

Hi,

I do have a question though. I was first attacked by the "Antivirus Pro" malware and was able to find enough info online to be able to remove it. That was when I downloaded MalwareBytes, Super Antispyware, Spybot, Avast, Registry Booster, and CCleaner. Since then I've also downloaded Hijack this. However, as you can see with the Kapersky scan, I've still got 3 infected files...

I now understand that no one product is going to fully protect me, but am I overlapping in coverage and making any of these things "fight" with each other? Is there a place that recommends or rates these programs? What's your preference?

I don't recommend registry tweakers since they don't give any extra advantage in my opinion. Of MBAM and Superantispyware I'd keep only one (both are good). Spybot and Avast can be left installed. You may want to disable TeaTimer though.

Two of the Kaspersky findings are quarantined ones.

Delete these manually:
C:\Documents and Settings\Z Grout\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\FileTracker\{21ACCD0F-CEC5-447D-90CE-6608B2685C04}
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20091110-194900.backup

Uninstall Macromedia Flash Player.

Have the hard drive partitions been defragged lately? How much memory does the system have installed?

Due to a lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
