Windows 7; Disk i/o maxes at 100% for 5 mins, then returns

Unread postby kanico » January 2nd, 2010, 10:15 am

For the last month or so I would get this problem where the laptop intermittently freezes up (audio player pauses as well) and the disk access light is solid for an intermittent amount of time anywhere from 30 second to 10 minutes at worst. in some cases my dis i/o would drop then drop to zero, for about 2 minutes, before it should finally come back to life (normal i/o access activity. this never happened on xp, running mcafee enterprise version 8.

I have a dell d620 pc (4gb ram) that now runs corp 64bit windows 7, an upgrade from xp, since windows 7 was launched.

I've protected the laptop (from the beginning) with att's version of the free mcafee security suite (as opposed to ruuning mcafee enterprise version 8, that I had running on the xp installation pre-windows 7).

I noticed this disk maxing problem now for about 1 month.

I initially suspected that the hard drive may be the problem, especially since I was running the disk at 97% capacity, on my seagate 500mb drive.

this are some of the disk relief steps the i've done in order

-relieve usage to a 80% capacity
-turn off swap file usage, formally 4gb
-ghosted image off the machine and back on, to rid any fragmentation concerns
-ran internal dell diags on the hard drive, passed
-ran seagate tools diag on the hard drive, details (non quick) version of the diags, passed

Since the disk resource file usage would list mcafee processes the was taking too many seconds to complete, i suspected that macfee may be the issue, and switched (uninstall mcafee) to norton security suite.

The issue still happened.

I also ran adaware & spybot search and destroy. seems like the found some minor stuff, but i still have the issue.

just yesterday, i downloaded and ran dr.cureit - all that was found was a suspected hosts file, that i let dr.cureit replace with a "default". ran dr.cure it again - and again it suspected and replace the host file.

the host file still looks suspicious to me. as a single guy i do routinely surf porn sites, so perhaps i need a primer on malware preventative porn site surfing, or some basic ground rules on surfing porn malware free.

As a newbie to this site, I'm 100% pc literate, though totally illiterate when it come to manually inoculating virus.

ps. as a footnote, i would also routinely have an issue where my firefox 3.5 (browser of choice) from time to time would max out my laptops CPU. task mgr reveals that firefox is hogging an avg of 50% of the cpu. if I leave the laptop for about 30min and return, firefox finally freed up. most times I just end the firefox process and restart. this relives it right aways. this problem, by the way, happened on my xp (pre w7) installation on this machine as well. I've also ran dells full built in diags on the latop to insure that I did not have any problem with my ram memory.

here is the hijack log and a link to a copy of my host file for your examinnation

I see you are using an x64 (64 bit) version of Windows.

May I draw your attention to THIS topic, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section Posting for help for 64 bit versions of Windows explains why at this time we cannot offer help to you.
