Hi Tara

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating multiple Anti Virus programs on your computer:
    ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS
    Norton AntiVirus

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and that doing so not only does not provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes! You MUST remove all but one anti-virus program.

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer.
  • Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  • In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  • Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

I tried running the scan several times and it seems as though it is taking quite a bit of time. Its been running now for about 12 hours and my fan is running very fast and pretty hot. Not sure how to proceed, but I'm going to try to let it run through to see if I get any results.

Hi Tara

12 hours is too long

Lets run TDSS Killer by Kaspersky.

-Download TDSS Killer and save to your Desktop. Also print out those instructions on the same page for running the scan.

-Extract (unzip) the file to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

-Go to Start ->Run. Type/Copy and Paste the following text into the prompt:

Code: Select all
"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\report.txt -v

-Click OK.
-If malicious services or files have been detected, the utility will prompt to reboot the PC in order to complete the disinfection procedure. Please reboot when prompted.

-After reboot, the driver will delete malicious registry keys and files as well as remove itself from the services list.
-A log file named report.txt should have been created and saved to the root directory (usually C:\report.txt).

Re: Google redirection virus?

Unread postby peku006 » December 30th, 2009, 4:34 am

Hi Tara

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

2 - Download and run OTM

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Paste the following code under the Image area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Files
    C:\Users\chickshakes\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\System32\net.net
C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\a\And you will know us\And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead - It was there that I saw you.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\b\Beck - Everybodys Gotta Learn Sometime.mp3
C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\l\Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around Me [Jun].
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\n\Nina Simone - I love you Porgy.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\Rod Stewart\Rod Steward - Rod Steward - Forever young.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\s\Sahara Hotnights\Sahara Hotnights - On top of your world.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\Tara\Fiona Apple - Fast As You Can.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\Tara\Pixies - La la love you.mp3
    C:\Users\chickshakes\Music\Music\Download\Tara\The Vibrators - Baby baby.mp3

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the OTM.log
2. a fresh HijackThis log
How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Thanks peku006

My computer seems to be running as normal. Does this mean it's almost fixed?

For some reason when I delete items it tells me:The Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?
I select yes and then it pops up 2 more times before deleting. It also does it when I go to my recycle bin, even though there is nothing in there.

Hi Tara

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 17.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Please reply with

a fresh HijackThis log

Re: Google redirection virus?

Unread postby peku006 » January 3rd, 2010, 1:57 pm

Hi Tara

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
      O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

After that.............

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

Delete RootRepeal and TDSS Killer from your desktop.

Download OTC by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTC.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

    Turn off System Restore-Vista
    • Click the Vista/Start icon.
    • Right Click >> Computer
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Protection tab.
    • Uncheck All drives
    • Click Turn Off System Restore at the prompt then click Apply.
    • Restart your computer.
    Turn ON System Restore-Vista
    • Click the Vista/Start icon
    • Right Click >> Computer
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Protection tab.
    • Checkmark All drives that were selected previously then click Apply.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
    http://www.update.microsoft.com

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
    • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
    • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
    • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead: Firefox or Opera

Here is a great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware.

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
