Fake Virus Scanner - SWP 2009 DEMO

Unread postby gps57 » December 20th, 2009, 11:19 pm

I revieved assistance getting rid of some problems on my wife's computer. Now I have the same problems on my computer.

There is a shield icon on the system tray that I did not install. If I click it, it puts a minimized window in the tray with the title "SWP 2009 DEMO." Then a windows is displayed with a title of "Antivirus Live." It won't let me close it. If I try to open the task manager to close it, it puts up a warning that says the task manager can't be started because it is infected. If I try to start Avast, my real anti virus software, it also puts up a warning saying it can't start it because the file is infected.

I have to start the computer in SAFE MODE to keep this thing from starting. I got the attached HT log by starting the computer in SAFE MODE.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your help.

I had to run the computer in SAFE mode because this fake virus scanner puts up a screen that I can not get rid of. It stays on top and prevents me from seeing the screens of other apps. By the way, this computer is running Windows XP Pro.

Re: Fake Virus Scanner - SWP 2009 DEMO

Unread postby xixo_12 » December 27th, 2009, 11:47 pm

Hi,

Information.
I have examined your log, and I believe this to be a computer used for business, either personal or corporate.
If I could point you in the direction of our rules, which state under Posting for help for business machine:
Computers used in a business environment often have policies and other modifications made to them. It is impossible for us to differentiate these from ones that have been made by an infection, so in removing what we think is an infection, we may compromise the business set up of your computer.

The scans we run often reveal information that most businesses would not want exposed in an open forum, and there are other legal constraints and ramifications involved with business machines that we are not equipped or trained to deal with.

Please Click for further explanation!

***Reminder : If you ask for help and unknown to us while it's involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advices are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

If this is indeed a business computer:
  • If it is a corporate computer, it is suggested that you take this issue to your IT department.
  • If this is a personal computer used for business (personal or corporate), it is suggested that you take this issue to your IT department, or your local PC repair store.
  • Please let me know you have read this so that the topic can be closed. I am sorry I can not be of further assistance.

Thank you for your understanding.

This is NOT a corporate computer. I have NO IT department. I am a simple guy that runs a small records management firm. I have no employees and barely make enough money to keep the business running. I simply don't have the cash flow to take this computer to a local repair store. They would charge more than the computer is worth, and more than I can pay.

My tiny company is called Vital Archives (http://www.vitalarchives.com). A quick look at the website will show you that we are NOT a big corporation with dedicated computer support. Small companies such as mine, which is a one person operation, simply can't make it if we don't stretch every resource to the absolute limit.

Don't punish me just because I have QuickBooks and Microsoft SQL Server (which I won at a local user group) running on my computer.

If you don't help me, I have no where else to turn.

Hi,

I need to stress it once again.
This forum was set up specifically to help home users, our volunteer helpers choose not to work on business machines.

We will close any topic where we believe the computer is one that is used in a business environment, irrespective of whether that business is a large company or a small one man enterprise.

Source : Posting for help for business machines

Your case fall in a small one man enterprise. Based on the rules, this forum is dedicated to the home user, and we as helper need to choose not to work on any business machine.
Above quote and link should explain well why we doesn't offer help toward any laptop/PC with related to the business.

I hope you can understand it why I need to behave like this.
I will now ask for this topic to be closed.

Sorry, I couldn't give any assistance .

Best regards,

As this issue involves either a company owned machine or a machine that is used for business purposes, it falls outside the scope of this forum. Therefore, this topic is now closed.
