excess commit charge causes(?) freeze while browsing

Unread postby afraker » December 8th, 2009, 7:15 pm

Hi - over the last week or so my PC (Dell, WinXP SP3) has been freezing because of what I think is a memory leak, browser hijack or other malware. No noticeable problems on startup; I start from a baseline of around 280M/2335 commit charge, with around 40 processes. I know the process # is a little high, but I've looked up all of them and they all seem to check out as at least non-malware; the Media Edition of Windows runs several extra processes, along with a couple of IPod processes, etc. CPU usage doesn't seem to be the issue - it spikes occasionally and momentarily to around 50% but no higher.

Opening a browser window or two takes me up to around 450M in commit charge (more for Firefox than IE). The problem is that eventually, especially if I stream audio or video but even usually if I don't, the commit charge begins to rise to the point that it exceeds 50-60% of capacity and eventually the browser shuts down or freezes, or the entire machine freezes. This happens with Firefox and IE. I haven't reconfigured my computer or changed any memory settings recently. Also have been having some occasionally patchy mouse response, especially when trying to highlight text - not sure if that's related or not. Multiple total scans with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware have turned up nothing more than some cookies that I deleted.

Here is my hijackthis log:

Hi, and thank you again for your help. I appreciate the detailed step-by-step instructions.

I had AVG installed at the time that the problems began happening, and it seemed that it also caused AVG to use a lot of memory and time. So I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG, to no avail. I then uninstalled it again. On your recommendation, I've now installed AntiVir and performed a system scan. It did find a few threats - please let me know if you'd like me to post the log.

Not sure how to remove all related registry keys. I have used regedit once or twice before, but did not want to chance editing registry without instructions from you.

  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version.

I was not able to install the updated Reader. Received the following error: 1402: could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS. Make sure you have sufficient access etc.
This is my home PC and I am the administrator, so access shouldn't be an issue. Am I correct in thinking this is related to removing old keys as you previously suggested?
Please let me know how to proceed, thanks.

Hi,

First,
Discussion.
Not sure how to remove all related registry keys. I have used regedit once or twice before, but did not want to chance editing registry without instructions from you.

Don't perform any self fixes (out from my instructions). What you need to do is to read carefully and follow the instructions that I will give to you.

Do you still have Adobe Acrobat 5.0 Installer?
Please don't misunderstand about Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat 5.0 products. It's different product. :)

Next,
Fix entries.
  • Run the HiJack This.
  • Click on Do a system scan only button.
  • Search the entries as below and tick at the small box.
    O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
  • Close any other program and leave HiJackThis program alone.
  • Click Fix checked.

Next,
Reboot.

Next,
Try again with this instruction.
Next,
Update Adobe Reader.
Any versions numbered lower than 9.2 should be replaced.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version.

Next,
RSIT by random/random.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to run the tool.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open.
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next post.
***You can find manually the log at C:\rsit

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • Respond to the discussion area.
  • Content of log.txt and info.txt (Find both in c:\rsit)

Thank you again for sticking with this issue. I did exactly as you instructed with HijackThis and rebooted, but was still not able to install the updated Reader. I got the same error at the same point in the installation.

Here are the RSIT logs:

Re: excess commit charge causes(?) freeze while browsing

Unread postby xixo_12 » December 20th, 2009, 9:40 am

Hi,

BACKDOOR TROJAN
I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Your computer is infected with BACKDOOR TROJAN.

For your references : Feel free to click.

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victims machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer, change settings on the computer and more. Please read this article by Roger A. Grimes on Remote Access Trojans it will give you an idea of the severity of the type of infection you have.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Because of the severity and the capabilities of this type of virus, (it cannot be known what changes to your system it has made or if it opened up other ways into your system) The only responsible course of action I can advise is to reformat your computer and reinstall windows.

Post any question if you have.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

As the resolution of this issue requires a reformat, and referrals to forums that can assist with that process have been made, this topic will now be closed.
