Many browsers start, fake virus scanner running

Unread postby gps57 » December 2nd, 2009, 6:35 pm

My wife's laptop started opening 6 or 7 instances of the IE browser when she clicked on the IE icon. Then a "fake" virus scanner keeps wanting to do a scan, and it pops up a screen that we can't minimize, and it prevents the Task Manager from starting so we can remove it.

Here is the Hijackthis scan log:

Re: Many browsers start, fake virus scanner running

Unread postby xixo_12 » December 12th, 2009, 7:05 am

Hi,

***Important :
  • You're advised to reply one log per post.
Please have a look on the Checklist. area to know what is the logs that I'm looking for.

First,
Important.
WEATHERBUG
WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is 'spyware', and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it 'unsolicited', and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly 'commercial'. So it does meet the definition for 'parasite': unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBug and choose one of these alternatives:

Please uninstall WeatherBug now.

Next,
Remove programs.
Please Click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Remove
Spybot - Search & Destroy <<You can reinstall after the system is clean
Viewpoint Media Player

If some programs listed above are not in present, please do not panic and proceed to the next step.

Next,
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on mbam-setup.exe > Run as Administrator and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    Image
  • Refer to above image and then click Remove Selected to proceed.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

RSIT by random/random.
Please download from from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe > Run as Administrator to run the tool.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open.
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next post.
***You can find manually the log at C:\rsit

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • Content of MBAM log
  • Content of log.txt and info.txt (find it in c:\rsit)
  • Please let me know if you still face any problem.

Re: Many browsers start, fake virus scanner running

Unread postby gps57 » December 14th, 2009, 12:09 pm

In the last item in your Checklist, you ask me to let you know if I am still facing any problems. The scans we did found and corrected some things. I will now run some tests to see if the original problems are still present. I'll post the results here later today to let you know if I see any problems.

I have been running the computer through some exercises and I am not seeing the problems I originally reported. Hopefully we solved the problems, but I'll wait for you to give me the all clear before I stop checking here.

Let me know if you need me to do anything else.

Thanks very much!!!

Hi,
Let's proceed.

First,
Fix entries.
  • Run the HiJack This by right click on the tool > Run as an Administrator.
  • Click on Do a system scan only button.
  • Search the entries as below and tick at the small box.
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
  • Close any other program and leave HiJackThis program alone.
  • Click Fix checked.

Next,
ERUNT by Lars Hederer
Download ERUNT and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on erunt-setup.exe > Run as Administrator to install the program.
  • Follow the prompts > uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • Next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT.
  • If ERUNT doesnt start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process

Note:
The backups can be restored from here:
C:\windows\ERDNT\<todays date>\ERDNT.exe

Next,
Registry Fix.
Copy below code to the notepad and save it as fix.reg (save type: "All files" (*.*)) to your desktop.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA}"=-

It should look like this -> Image

Go to Desktop, Right click on fix.reg and merge the information with the registry.

Next,
GMER.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Right click on Gmer.exe > Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan, click NO.
  • Click on >>> symbol and choose on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Next,
RSIT.
Please run again RSIT to produce log.txt. It will overwrite the old log.

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.

Re: Many browsers start, fake virus scanner running

Unread postby gps57 » December 17th, 2009, 5:15 pm

I did all the steps that you listed in your latest post. The kaspersky scan completed in about 4 hours. When it was done, it indicated that there were no problems. All the threat counters were set to zero. When I clicked to View Report, it put up an empty report. I tried to go back to see if I clicked the wrong thing, but it took me all the way back to the beginning and started loading the scanner and virus definitions again. I could not get back to the report.

Since the report was empty, I decided not to run the scan again and wait another 4 hours. However, if you need me to run the scan again and try to get the report, I will.

Let me know if you need me to run the kaspersky scan again.

Thanks.
