Getting redirected when clicking on results from Google sear

Unread postby umlegend » November 14th, 2009, 10:44 pm

First I had Anti Virus Pro. I downloaded Spybot. It cleaned some stuff, but Anti Virus Pro was still functioning. I downloaded AVG. It didn't get rei of it the first time, but seemed to work the 2nd time. Then I downloaded Malware bytes and ran that to be sure. It found a bunch of crap. A couple days later and I am being redirected a lot when clicking on Google search results to a variety of different pages. I downloaded Hijack this and ran it.

Here is the Hijack this log:

Hi umlegend,
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Temporarily Remove Spybot S&D Using Control Panel
If you are using XP, From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs. Highlight this Entry, and choose Remove :
If you are using Vista, From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading. Right click this Entry, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:
Spybot S&D
If it asks whether you want to remove all settings, answer YES.
You can re-install it after we are through, if you wish.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT the machine
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2009-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt

Thanks for the reply. I had already done the MalwareBytes program but while Spybot was on the machine. Should I still do everything you said and just re-run the MalwareBytes program? Also, anything you noticed from the Hijack log?

umlegend,
OK, there is a lot to do here. Just take it one step at a time.
The reasons for each task will be clear later.
(The problem with Spybot is this: while trying to protect your machine, it may restore bad files after they are deleted.)
-----------------------------------------------------------
You have two antivirus programs on your PC at the same time. They will conflict with each other and cause system instability and/or improper AntiVirus protection. Choose to keep just one: either the Norton(Symantec) or AVG Antivirus, and Uninstall the other, Using Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll (file missing)
O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LogitechDesktopMessenger.exe
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {32493892-c252-49df-9e98-24fbde2849da} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iehlpr32.dll

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Logitech desktop Messenger
PowerReg Scheduler v3
Weatherbug

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I would like to see a log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
You can open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (we call it MBAM), click the Logs tab, and see a list of stored logs.
They are listed by time/date stamp. Please double-click the most recent one and post the contents here so I can have a look at it.

So we are looking for the new HiJackThis log, the Installed programs list from HiJackThis, and the contents of the last MBAM log.
Use separate posts if you wish.

umlegend,
Looks quite good.
We will update your version of Adobe Reader. Older ones allow open doors into your machine.
Most of what Viewpoint Manager does is for their benefit.
Unless you use AOL, or have a serious fondness for it, I would remove it and have included it here.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Viewpoint Manager

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

As a final check please run this scan to be sure we got rid of everything:
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

If this all works OK, I will give you a few final suggestions, reset System restore, and ask you to turn on automatic updates to get Service Pack 3 for Windows XP.

What that report means is that the referenced mp3 tune is infected and needs to be deleted, or it could download more junk onto your machine. So far it doesn't appear that it has downloaded anything malicious that is still on the machine.

The file is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicki\My Documents\My Music\Zune\jus who i am poets pirates.mp3
If you know how to navigate to that file (DO NOT DOUBLE-CLICK IT) just highlight it and press <Delete>.
Then empty the Recycle bin.
If you need an automated method to remove it, let me know.

This is the reason to avoid any file sharing P2P programs like Limewire. The user will always end up with an infected machine, and maybe even a disastrous financial problem.

Tell me how it goes.

Done. I also searched the term pirates and found that same song/file in 4 other spots and deleted them as well.

You also said I would need to do some other things like get the XP Serv Pak 3. My pc is telling me that it is ready for me to download, but I never did due to hearing that it causes more problems than it solves. However, I will do whatever you say on this.

Problem: I just went and did a search in Google. Probably 4 of the 12 or so results redirected me. What is going on here?

Let the PC download whatever updates it wants, and make sure Automatic Updates are ON. (Control Panel, Automatic Updates).
The problems are much worse if you DON'T allow it to update.
Let it install whatever it wants. Service Pack 3 is large and may take quite a while to finish. Give it the OK.

Do you have a router? Do you know if the Administrator password has been set to something other than what it came with?

Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.

Let me know the answer to my question if you can, and how the update and removal go.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
