Hello sin_fury,

Your very welcomed, I appreciate you saying something. :) Good job hanging in there, we have a little more to do yet.

Please do not make any changes to your system, run any "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me.
Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Please print these instructions, you will be closing your browser and will not have access to them.

Step 1.
Update Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is out-of-date. There are serious security issues with older versions of Adobe Reader.
I'm not asking you to update the Adobe Acrobat installation... this can be quite costly. I am going to insist that you update your Adobe Reader software.
Then use the Reader for viewing PDF files... you can use the Acrobat software for your other needs.

Please download the current version of Adobe Reader...Copyright © Adobe Systems Inc.
Please UNCHECK the box for the: Free McAfee Security Scan.
  1. Click the yellow "Download now"... button. If you don't already have Adobe DLM... you may receive a prompt...
  2. If prompted to install "Adobe DLM" This software is not a requirement to obtain the latest Adobe Reader software...so the choice is yours.
The Adobe (DLM) Download Manager... allows you to "pick up where you left off", if your download process is interrupted. A good idea if you are using dial-up.
If you choose to install Adobe DLM, it will start the download automatically. Adobe DLM software removal instructions available here...if wanted.
  3. If not using Adobe DLM...click on the highlighted "click here to download" text, to begin the Reader download.
Save the file to your desktop.
      Uninstall OLD Adobe Reader
    • Please uninstall Adobe Reader before installing the latest version... Go to Start > Control Panel
    • Double click on Add/Remove Programs... Locate:
      Adobe Reader 8.1.4
    • Click on Change/Remove to uninstall it. Once uninstalled... Close and exit Control Panel.
  4. Click on the Adobe Acrobat Reader (AdbeRdrxx_en_US.exe) icon, on your desktop... to install the new (free) version.
The Adobe Reader download file name will be different, depending on the language or OS chosen. xx in the name = version numbers.
  5. The Adobe installer will check your system and begin the installation process. Use the default installation parameters.
  6. When the installation is complete... Close and re-open your Internet browser.

An alternate to Adobe Reader, you could try the free (for personal use) Foxit-Reader. It's a smaller download and when installed, uses less resources than Adobe Reader. Note: Let me know if interested in Foxit-Reader and I will provide safe download and installation instructions.

Step 2.
Java Update Needed!
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components and update:

Attention: Print these instructions or copy them. You will be closing your browser!!

DOWNLOAD UPDATED VERSION
  1. Get the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)... © Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  2. Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 17.
  3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
  4. Select your Platform: "Windows"... then check "I agree to the (current update version) License Agreement.".
  5. Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  6. Locate the entry for Windows Offline Installation and click on the file name, save the file to your desktop.
Dial-up users: You may want to check the "Windows Offline Installation" box and opt to use...
"Download Selected with Sun Download Manager". The download can be restarted, in case it's interrupted.
<STOP> Do not install the new version of Java yet. We need to do some cleanup first!

REMOVE OLD JAVA VERSIONS
  1. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  2. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs ...remove all older versions of Java.
  4. Check (highlight) the following entries:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 14
    Java(TM) 6 Update 6
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button...follow any onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5, for each version of Java listed.
  7. When all Java components are removed... Exit Add/remove Programs and Control Panel.
    Delete old Java Folder
    • Right click on the Start...button.
    • Select Explore...from the menu.
    • Navigate to and find the following folder: if found, delete it.
It's possible it may have been removed by the uninstall steps
      C:\Program Files\Java\ <==== delete this entire folder
    • When finished, close and exit Explorer.

INSTALL UPDATED VERSION
  1. Close all open applications (standard), especially your browser.
  2. From desktop... double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  3. Follow the on-screen directions...when installation is completed successfully, reboot your computer normally.
  4. Once the computer has been restarted, you can delete the "downloaded" installation file from your desktop.
OPTIONAL:
To prevent an unnecessary JAVA component from running when you boot your computer each time...
  1. Go to Control Panel... click on the JAVA icon.
  2. Press the Update tab... UNCHECK "Check for Updates Automatically". (You can check for updates manually.)
Reply "Never Check" to the warning prompt.
  3. Now press the Advanced tab. Press the [+] to expand the "Miscellaneous" options.
  4. UNCHECK "Java Quick Starter".
  5. Press Apply and OK... then close the Java Control Panel. close and exit Control Panel.
If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Google Toolbar unless you want it.

Please reboot your computer nomally now...

Step 3.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. If so, just ignore the download instructions.
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
Attention!
In order for both info and log files to be produced again, I need you to delete the existing RSIT folder:
  1. C:\RSIT <-- delete this entire folder , then...
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  3. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 (Notepad) text files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Re: Slow computer

Unread postby sin_fury » November 14th, 2009, 8:49 pm

1: The only problem I had with the process occurred after installing Adobe Reader. On the 6th step when it said close and re-open my internet browser, firefox wouldn't open up. I opened Windows Task Manager to try to "end process" on firefox so I could just try opening it again. I waited 2-3 minutes and Task Manager still didn't close firefox, so I tried to do a normal restart of the computer. It froze on the blue screen that said "Windows is Shutting Down" so I just did a hard shut down, waited 10-20 seconds, booted the computer up again and was able to do all of the directions from then on without any problems.

2: Logs coming

3: Firefox has been acting as described above for quite some time, but other than that I haven't had the problems with Word or Excel I described in my last post.

Re: Slow computer

Unread postby Wingman » November 16th, 2009, 12:25 pm

Hi sin_fury,
Good job hanging in there. :) I'd like to remove some startup entries that are not needed and may help in overall computer response.

I noticed that you are using an older version of FireFox version (3.0.15). Upgrading to the latest version FireFox 3.5.5, may help with your stability issues. If you decide to upgrade, please do so AFTER we have finished.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
OTM
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on OTM.exe to run it.
If you receive the "Open File - Security Warning", please press Run.
  2. Please copy and paste the text in the Code box below, into OTM (1).
Please refer to the OTM screen image below, for reference.
Warning: Do not type it out... errors could damage your machine.
    Code: Select all
    :Processes
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-
    "Adobe ARM"=-
    "SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
    "SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\tasks\Ad-Aware SE Personal.job
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]

Please refer to this image to use OTM.exe

    Image

  3. Click on MoveIt! (2)
  4. The end results of the processing will be in 2 places:
    • The Results window on the right side of the OTM screen.
    • A log (text) file created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
  5. Copy all the text from the Results window... Open Notepad, paste the OTM results into the Notepad file, save it on your desktop.
  6. Click Exit (3) when done.
  7. Please paste the entire content from the OTM (Results) window (Notepad file) or the OTM log file, in your next reply.
NOTE: If your computer did not automatically reboot... please reboot it (normally) now!

Step 3.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Note: You - will - need to use Internet Explorer for this scan!
Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
  • Hold CTRL + SHIFT buttons, while right clicking on the tray icon.
  • Under Scan now there should appear items to "disable".
  • Disable all available items. then exit... if prompted allow the changes.

Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
    • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.
Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 4.
Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. (Only the log file will be created in this run...)
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. <<will be maximized
  3. Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. OTM results.
  3. ESET scan results.
  4. RSIT log.txt file contents.
  5. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

1: The only issue I had was trying to disable McAfee while Eset ran. When I rightclick there are 8 options but one of them is grayed out... "Disable On Access Scan". I was still able to run Eset, but I don't know if the results are skewed at all.

2-4: Logs coming. I'll post both the OTM and Eset in this post and then the RSIT in the next one.

5: Still haven't gotten the ram yet and you told me to wait on updating firefox, so other than that things seem to be alright. The scan said it found 17 infections and I don't think it deleted anything but I'm guessing they are just cookie related (granted you would probably know more about that).

Re: Slow computer

Unread postby Wingman » November 17th, 2009, 3:37 pm

Hi sin_fury,

The ESET scan found one entry that should be removed... We'll uninstall the PConPoint v2.0 program and the entry found by ESET should also be removed at that time. The other remaining "C:\QooBox\Quarantine" entries are from a previous run of ComboFix, you performed, these are in a quarantined folder and harmless at this point. We'll remove them when we are finished.
Caution: You should not run ComboFix, unless under the supervision of a trained helper, knowledgeable about ComboFix. This is a very powerful tool, not meant for the general public to use and if used incorrectly, can make your computer into a large paperweight.

Step 1.
Add/Remove Programs
I need you to uninstall some programs from your computer.
  1. Click Start...then click Run.
  2. In the open text entry box...please copy/paste the following:
    appwiz.cpl
  3. Click the OK...button. It takes a few seconds for the program list to be "populated'.
  4. Locate the following program(s):
    PConPoint v2.0
  5. Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the program.
    Carefully read any prompts...
Some uninstallers prompt in a way to trick you into keeping the program, sometimes, preventing them from being uninstalled again!
  6. When finished...close/exit Add/Remove Programs.

Step 2.
SReng - System Repair Engineer ...from KZTechs.COM.
Only perform the steps included here, misuse of this program could cause problems with your computer
Repair File Associations
If you already have SREng by Smallfrogs... when executed, it will check for any updated versions.
Download SREng ... © Smallfrogs ... save the .zip file to your desktop.
  1. Right-click on sreng2.zip and select "Extract all"... extract it to your desktop.
  2. Open the sreng2 folder and double click SREngLdr.EXE to run it.
A little "download" pop-up will appear on the lower right side of the screen, ignore this or press "OK" to remove.
  3. Select System Repair from the left pane.
  4. Click on the File Association...tab.
  5. Check each entry that has an Error status...then click the Repair button.
  6. Refer to this image for an example:
    Image
  7. In the above example (only) ... it would be .TXT, .REG, .SCR and .INI file associations that need repairing.
    Your case may be different...
  8. Once finished... Close and Exit SREng.

Step 3.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button.
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check everything to be removed, except the System Volume entries
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan results.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

1: No problems.
2: Log coming. Btw, the reason it says December 17th is because yesterday I was trying to figure out what day of the week the 10th was... apparently I hit apply instead of cancel.
3: Things seem to be doing fine. Awaiting your verdict.

Hi sin_fury,

I must repeat... do not make any changes to your system, this means downloading any new software, running any "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me.
Your access to the Internet, browsing, etc. should be minimized until we are finished. Some of the things deleted by MBAM were rogue security products, cleaners, that promise to clean your system but in actuality, are infections themselves. Before downloading and installing security products, it's best to ask about them in some of the Tech Help forums available. Taking these products at their face value, can compromise your system.

Rootkit Warning
Your computer had multiple infections, including a rootkit.
A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.
You are strongly advised to do the following:
  1. Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  2. Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts.
If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  3. From a clean computer, change all your passwords
(Internet login, your email address(es), financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon...any online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer, the attacker can still get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  4. Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Due to its rootkit functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again.
Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to reformat and re-install the operating system (OS).
This decision will have to be made by you...

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

We can attempt to clean this machine but we will not guarantee that it won't still be compromised, afterwards.

It's up to you
Please let me know how you want to proceed.

Thanks,
Wingman

I can't reinstall the OS until December 19th... I'm still down at college and that is graduation day. I wouldn't mind trying everything we can do to fix it, but if the OS needs to be reinstalled for sure, I will do that when I get back home. Luckily I haven't been using my credit cards online for a while (and this all started back in June), so hopefully I'm safe in that department, but I still will notify the banks just in case. Thanks for doing everything you can so far, and like I said, I wouldn't mind going farther because there is really nothing I can do for a month.

Hi sin_fury,

Ok, we'll continue for now...

I wanted to make you aware... your MBAM scanner has not been updated for quite some time. Please, for your own protection, update your security tools
often, to pick up the most recent detection rules and processes. Before running a scan with any security product, you should always check for updates.

Please print these instructions, you will NOT have Internet access during some of the steps.

Step 1.
GMER
I know you have already downloaded this, but please delete that program and download again. These tools are updated often.
The downloaded file will have a random name... this prevents malware from detecting and blocking it.
Please download GMER... random file name.exe by GMER. An alternate (zip file) download site.
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
**Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  1. Double click on the random named.exe to execute. If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load.
  2. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO <--- Important!
  3. On the right side panel, several boxes have been checked. Please UNCHECK the following: (see image below)
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All <-- don't miss this one

    Image

  4. If you don't get a warning then... Click the Rootkit/Malware tab at the top of the GMER window.
  5. Click the Scan button.
  6. Once the scan has finished... click Copy.
  7. Open Notepad and paste (Ctrl+V) what you copied.
  8. Select "Save As" in Notepad...saving the file to your desktop as "gmerRK.txt"... then close Notepad.
  9. Copy and paste the contents of the files gmerRK.txt in your next reply.

Step 2.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. GMER gmerRK.txt file contents
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

1: No Problems
2: Scan results coming
3: Computer pretty much the same

A note... I am going on vacation until Saturday (leaving in the morning), so I won't be able to do anything from THIS computer for a while. Saturday night around midnight Central Standard Time is the next time I will be near this computer.

Edit: looked like the scan was done, but it's still going. Post the full log in the next post.

Unread postby Wingman » November 24th, 2009, 10:59 am

Hi sin_fury,

Thanks for making me aware of your time away. Enjoy your vacation! :D
When you return and have access to this computer again...

Please print these instructions, you may have to reboot your machine.

Step 1.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button. <<=== Important!

Step 2.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan latest results
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman
