Hi gabol,

You appear to have a cracked version of Vertus Fluid Mask 3 3.0.10 on your computer. You need to remove Vertus Fluid Mask 3 3.0.10 before we can continue any further. Please remove this from your system. You will find this forum's rules here: Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules. Here is quote from it:

Any time the helper detects that you may have illegal software on your machine, that helper may stop assisting you immediately until you can demonstrate that you have rectified the situation. We will not support fixing machines with pirated or otherwise illegal software.

Remove Programs

  • Click Start button, type appwiz.cpl and press enter.
  • For each program below, right-click the program in the list and choose uninstall.

    Vertus Fluid Mask 3 3.0.10

I notice that Fluid Mask was installed on your other computer you received help with here. It is very likely the source of the issues you experienced with the other computer. This should be reason enough to avoid cracked software in the future.

If you decide to uninstall and to continue with securing your computer, please continue.

  • Please start Hijackthis
  • Click the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager... under System Tools

You will see a list of programs installed on your computer.
Please click the Save List... button and specify where you would like to save the list.
Once you click Save, the list will open in Notepad. Simply copy and paste the entire contents of Notepad in your next post.

Hi shinybeast,

I uninstalled Vertus. Just wanted to let you know that I had installed the trial version and the crack never worked. I think the crack was actually the virus. I learned the hard way it's wrong to try to crack a program. In the other computer I had the trial version and never installed the crack.

thanks for helping.

Hello gabol,

I uninstalled Vertus. Just wanted to let you know that I had installed the trial version and the crack never worked. I think the crack was actually the virus. I learned the hard way it's wrong to try to crack a program. In the other computer I had the trial version and never installed the crack.

Understood. Yes, it's really not worth it in the end. ;)

Let's continue:

If that is indeed all that ESET found, then no need to scan again now. In the future you may want to perform an online scan once in a while, as Kaspersky and ESET scans tend to be a bit more capable.

Please delete these folders

c:\users\hector\documents\downloads\vertus.fluid.mask.v3.0.10-engine
c:\users\hector\downloads\vertus.fluid.mask.v3.0.10-engine

Malware writers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in commonly used applications. Your Java and Acrobat Reader are slightly out of date.

Remove older version(s):

    Click Start, click Run...
  • Type "appwiz.cpl" without the quotes and click OK
  • Right-click Java(TM) 6 Update 15 and click Uninstall to uninstall Java
  • Right-click Adobe Reader 9.1.3 and click Uninstall to uninstall Adobe Reader

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java

Older versions of Java may have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malware.
Please follow the steps below to update the Java Runtime Enviornment

Download and install newest version:

  • Please visit:http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp scroll down the page a bit and click Download underJava SE Runtime Environment (JRE)
  • Select your platform and agree to the license agreement (after having read it, of course) by clicking the checkbox. Click Continue.
  • Click the link (jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe) under Available Files and download the offline installer to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running, including web browsers.
  • From your desktop, double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Reboot your computer.

Please let me know when you have done these things and post a new HijackThis log for me to check.

Hello gabol,

Looking good. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

I see you installed ZoneAlarm. So with Avast!, Zone Alarm, WinPatrol, MBAM, you look to be pretty well protected.

You can delete ckscanner.exe.

OTL Cleanup

Please run OTL which should still be on your desktop
In the upper right click CleanUp
This will delete OTL and clean up after it.

Implementing the following suggestions will greatly reduce your chances of malware problems in the future.

Update Windows

It is important to keep Windows updated to close vulnerabilities in the operating system as they are discovered.

Close all windows and temporarily disable your anti-virus (usually through a tray icon)

Click Start, click All Programs and click Windows Update
In the Update control panel that opens, click Check for updates
Windows will then check for updates, if there are any needed, read and follow instructions provided to download and install the updates.

Keep installed programs up to date

Anti-virus
Most important is keeping your anti-virus software up to date. An out of date anti-virus is not much better than no anti-virus. If your anti-virus is not set to update automatically (preferred), it is imperative that you occasionally update it manually. You usually can accomplish this through a tray icon.

Update Other Vulnerable Software
Malware writers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in commonly used applications. There are several online sites which will scan your computer for outdated software. I've listed two below. I recommend occasionally visiting and scanning your computer to detect vulnerable software that should be updated.
F-Secure Health Check
Secunia Online Software Inspector

Best Practices for Email and Downloaded Files.

  • Do not read emails from unknown sources.
  • Make it a habit to never open email attachments from anyone, including people you know, unless you absolutely have to. If you need to open an attachment, scan it with your anti-virus before you open it.
  • Do not use Peer to Peer software to "share" media and software. You will get more than you expected and the "bonus" will not be something you want and will bring you back seeking help.
  • Do not use keygens or hacked software. First, it is stealing. Second, it is almost always infected with something. If you cannot afford to buy something, there is likely a free alternative that will be a good substitute. Search around and seek out advice from a trusted forum. Most will be glad to tell you of their favorite free program that performs the job you want done.

I encourage you to check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
and miekiemoes' article "How to prevent Malware:"

If you have any questions about these suggestions, I would be happy to answer them.

Regards,
shinybeast

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
