Unread postby a_wees13 » October 10th, 2009, 3:19 pm

Hi!
I clicked on a bad link two days ago and now when I try to use Google search about every other time I click on a link my browser (FireFox) is redirected to a random site such as apartmentfinder.com or myoptimumhealth.com. I ran HijackThis and here's my logfile

With reference to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, please uninstall the following programs before we continue:

  • Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  • Locate LimeWire 4.16.6 and click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
  • Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel when done.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Hi

yes I had uninstalled it. I looked back in uninstall programs and it wasn't present but I went in to my program files and deleted the LimeWire folder. Does it look ok now?

Yes, that looks ok now. Thanks.

Do the re-directs happen only when using Firefox, or when you use other browsers too?

I noticed you fixed some HijackThis entries yourself. Firstly, please can i ask you not to go running scans or trying to fix things yourself as it will just make my job harder. Thanks. ;)

Secondly, the ProxyServer entry - Did you originally set that yourself?

No Antivirus
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for non-commercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

[Please note that trial pay is not needed to get any product for free.]

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts, system instability and false virus alerts.

GooredFix

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the yes button when prompted.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).

Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Hi
Yes, the only browser that seemed to redirect is FireFox. I now use Google Chrome and haven't had a problem. In response to the antivirus question, I did download Avira after the problem started but after reading the sticky about having too many antivirus programs I got rid of all the ones I had (Windows Defender and Avira) and kept Malwarebytes. After reading your post I just redownloaded Avira. By the way when I first noticed the problem a couple weeks ago and ran Avira it detected the GEN dropper trojan (I can't remember the exact name). Which it deleted and didn't detect after that even though I was still having a problem.

Sorry about fixing the Hijackthis entry; before I posted on here I tried to do a little research and get rid of the trojan myself...whoops. I don't know what the proxyserver entry I don't really know what it is or how to change it so to my knowledge I haven't done anything to it.

Hi

MalwareBytes (MBAM) isn't an antivirus or a replacement for one, so It's fine to run MBAM along with Avira.

Do you know anything about this file on an external drive (EG: USB memory stick)?
E:\ecd_pc.exe

Are the re-directs still happening with Firefox?

ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update has been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform full scan, then click on Scan
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.

In your next reply:
  1. MBAM log
  2. RSIT log.txt
  3. A description of how the computer is running now.

I wasn't prompted after clicking show results in MalwareBytes after the scan so I don't know if this is what you were looking for. If not I'll run it again.
I played around with google search and it doesn't redirect me anymore! Everything seems to be running normal. I haven't, however tried starting it in safemode so I don't know if that's still disabled.

Hi

FindFile

Download FindFile by Atribune from >here<
  • Extract the contents to your Desktop
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the program.
  • Enter digeste.dll into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while, if any files are found, a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
  • This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.(System registry & Current user registry)
  • Click on OK
  • When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes to create the folder.
  • After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
  • Now click on OK. A backup has been created.

OTM

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Paste the following code under the Image area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1017A80C-6F09-4548-A84D-EDD6AC9525F0}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{1017A80C-6F09-4548-A84D-EDD6AC9525F0}]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{1017A80C-6F09-4548-A84D-EDD6AC9525F0}"=-
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{e843bd24-0ddc-11db-949d-806d6172696f}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
    "C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
    "NFRAgent"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explorer]
    "HonorAutoRunSetting"=dword:00000001
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "NoAdminPage"=dword:00000000
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_AresChatServer]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AresChatServer]

    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
    • Go to Java Site
    • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
    • In Platform box choose Windows.
    • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
    • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
    • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
    • Uninstall all old versions of Java
        J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
        Java(TM) 6 Update 11
        Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.

    Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date.
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742)
        Adobe Reader 8.1.2
      < via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    • Install the new downloaded updated software.
