Cannot view TaskMgr or recognize CD's

Unread postby Catbarber » October 19th, 2009, 12:52 am

Thanks for your help in advance. I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP and I have a problem with POPUPS constantly appearing. Also I am unable to view my TASKMGR (the button is unavailable). So far the only thing I have done to try and restore my system was to run MSCONFIG and un-check the following 3 programs in the STARTUP TAB. NVCPL , SEARCH PROTECTION, PAVRM. After cold starting my computer I still got many pop-up windows while trying to download Hijackthis from Trend Micro's website. Also I still could not access the windows taskmgr program to see what is running in the system. Finally my CD ROM recently became disabled and is not allowing me to load my new Anti-Virus program.

* I DO have internet access capability but it has slowed substantially.
* I DO NOT have an Anti-Virus program installed but have something from Trend Micro that would not
load into this computer. The CD ROM would not recognize the new CD.

Below is my latest log-file.

Hello and Welcome back to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Please stay with me untill I give the all clean OK

I would like to get a better look at your system, please do the following so I can get some more detailed logs

Download DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

Link1
Link2
Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

GMER:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
Image
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

      1.logs from DDS
      2.log from GMER

Thank you Gringo. I will also need a little patience as the time for my replies could be a 24 - 48 hours maximum. I will not abandon this project until you sign me off as completed. The reason I may take a little
longer to reply is because the affected computer is at my home and I am only there a few hours each day. I will promise to work on it each day. I know your time is precious. Thank you for your help and I will follow y our instructions and my next reply will include your requests pasted in it. john

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
