Trojan Masquerading as Windows Updater? + Log

Unread postby jackolantern » October 13th, 2009, 12:48 am

Ran Avast!, AdAware, Malwarebytes and Spybot SD to fix slow computer. Now problem seems to narrowed to the windows automatic updater. If updater allowed to work, Internet traffic never ends and page file, cpu and commit charge very high. Hour glass never goes away and must reboot to exit. Upon making Automatic Windows Updater "manual", problems stop. Also, "updates" are always required every day and are always the same files. COMODO disabled and disappears from tray every now and then and Threatfire in constant state of quarantine (Tray icon always on fire) when screen frozen. Threatfire heuristic alert fired once while attempting to install Windows update. Log follows:

Hi, Welcome to the Malware Removal forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

If you follow these guidelines, things should proceed smoothly. :)
I am currently reviewing your log, and will return as soon as possible with your instructions.

In the meantime Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply.

Re: Trojan Masquerading as Windows Updater? + Log

Unread postby Cypher » October 20th, 2009, 1:58 pm

Hi jackolantern.

Fix HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis

  • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  • When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
  • Note: Only check those items listed below.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O3 - Toolbar: LogonManager Class - {0E6D2E9F-79C6-457A-8DAC-6EE10470CB69} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: AOL_MailInfo2 Class - {14DB4DBD-FB4A-458e-8699-F9EB4BDAFEBC} - (no file)

  • After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  • Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.
  • Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.

Next.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Next.

Please Download SysProt Antirootkit
you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors.

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select all items and check Hidden Objects Only at the bottom of the window.
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

In your next reply.

1. RSIT log.txt.
2. Sysprot log.
3. Please let me know how your computer is performing now.

Re: Trojan Masquerading as Windows Updater? + Log

Unread postby jackolantern » October 22nd, 2009, 10:33 pm

Eset hangs at 30% every scan on the same file. I will keep trying and check back here to see if you have further instructions.

The name of the file that Eset hangs on while scanning is C:\dell\MEDIAEXE\ODM.exe if that at all maters.

Hi jackolantern.
Ok lets try another scanner.

Disable PC Tools Threatfire

  • Right-click on ThreatFire's icon near the clock (it's an orange flame) and select Suspend.
  • When you see that the icon has turned from an orange flame to a blue icon with an orange strip in the middle, ThreatFire has been temporarily disabled.

Next.

Disable Ad-Aware Service

This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK

Next.

Disable Avast Anti-Virus

  • Launch Avast Anti-Virus
  • Click Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting
  • Check Disable Avast self defence module then click OK
  • Exit out of Avast Anti-Virus.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Next.

Kaspersky Online Scan

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.

Re: Trojan Masquerading as Windows Updater? + Log

Unread postby jackolantern » October 24th, 2009, 4:05 pm

I am not able to use Kapersky online scanner either. In addition, my computer's ability to download and install security updates has been at least corrupted and probably taken over. and I believe that perhaps until I am able to install the latest updates that all attempts to fix my computer are in vain as I am re-infected almost instantaneously. Your thoughts?

P.S.

I hope that it is not considered bad form to engage in dialog while being helped.
