Internet Explorer won't connect

Unread postby ryounker » October 8th, 2009, 1:46 pm

When I open internet explorer I get a message that it will not connect and it says " Your security settings put your computer at risk. Click here to change settings". Another window also puts up saying "A program on your computer has currupted your default search provider settings for Internet Explorer. IE has reset to your original search provider, Live Search. IE will now open search settings where you can change this setting or install more search providers." I've ran spyware doctor forever and they even sent me their new beta version to no avail. I can access the internet with no problem in Safe Mode with Networking. Here is the log file:

Hi ryounker,
Download Firefox from here :http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html and install it.
Do not import any settings from Internet explorer.
Reboot to Normal Mode and see if you can see the internet using Firefox. Safe mode with networking is dangerous.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

-------------------------------------------------
Download Security Check by screen317 from one of these locations:
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe
http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and hit <Enter> to authorize the scan when the dialog box comes up.
The program will add a number of progress lines as it performs the scans.
Wait until the program tells you it has copied the information to checkup.txt
A Notepad document also should open automatically with all the information in it.
Please copy the contents of that Notepad document and paste it in your reply here.

So we are looking for The two file contents from RSIT, and the file contents from Security Check.
Use separate posts for each if it's easier.

ryounker,
The Event Log is Warning of a possible Hard Drive Failure.
Let's check that first before we start cleaning.
You may need to copy critical files from the drive to an external medium like CDs or DVDs.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

ryounker,
OK, then let's try a repair and re-look afterward.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

If it's present on your Desktop, please delete your original file Checkhd.txt
Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
Please post the contents of this file.

ryounker,
The Volume Bitmap "errors" are a bug in the way chkdsk reports with NTFS systems. It's OK.
The procedure fixed the rest of the issues.
---------------------------------------------
Patch the DNS Vulnerability
Go to this Microsoft site :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
You may need to use Internet Explorer for the site to work properly.
Click on the Download button and install the update.
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 7.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
WildTangent
<< recommended removal-you decide

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
Scroll down - It is currently the 5th item on the page (the page changes often), called JRE 6 Update 16
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation version.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
When you first start the new version, it will likely request to install a minor update. Allow it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis if it's not already running
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Please tell me how your machine is behaving.

ryuounker,
Thanks for the screenshot.
This is evidently a bug in the IE8 setup. A lot of people have had the experience.
There is a thread (with some Microsoft posts) here:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/iewebdevelopment/thread/d4fcb887-3c79-438b-9efb-f3a5daeb65e9
It is clearly not a malware issue, or a real danger.
Let's continue with cleaning the machine, and you can decide if you want to use any of the suggested fixes, or just tolerate it.
Later, we can discuss the best way to do any of the suggestions. Have a look at the thread and let me know what you think.

Meanwhile you need to get rid of this one:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: HpWebHelper - {AAAE832A-5FFF-4661-9C8F-369692D1DCB9} - C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\Vendors\CN=Hewlett-Packard,L=Cupertino,S=Ca,C=US\plugin\WebHelper.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Since the last set of posts, I see you have removed AVG. If you want to remove or install anything before we are through, please let me know.
Spyware Doctor is an Anti-Spyware program, but is not adequate by itself to protect your PC.
INSTALL AN ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM
Download just one of these free anti-virus programs, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.
Consider this an Emergency until you complete it!-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
