Hi, Welcome back to Malware Removal.
My nickname is Cyborg, and I'll be helping you with your malware problems.
HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Please note the following important guidelines
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  • If you have any questions concerning any of the steps mentioned, ASK, don't guess or assume.
  • Please onlypost your problem at one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
  • Please do not run any other fix/removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  • Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

No reply after 3 days in your thread will result in your topic being closed
Please notify me in advance if you are not able to reply me within 3 days

If you agree with the above terms and condition, we shall begin

Disclaimer: Given the nature of the infections that were present on the machine, I give no guarantees about the security of this computer and have to the best of my abilities tried to both identify and eradicate all malware.

Please note that I'm still under active training which means that all infections are first checked by a teacher/admin before I post them here, this could cause a slight delay in my replies.
However, this guarantees that the advises you get from me are sound and will not in most cases cause damage to your computer.

Hi. :)

I apologise for the delay, Cyborg is currently unavailable. If you still require assistance please carry out the below, thank you.

FixPolicies:

Please download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here.

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box should briefly appear and then close.
  • Leave FixPolicies on your desktop please until I otherwise advise, thank you.

Scan with Rooter:

Please download Rooter to your desktop.

  • Double click on Rooter.exe to start the application.
  • Now click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is completed a text file called Rooter.txt will appear on your desktop, post the contents in your next reply.
  • Now click on Close button to exit Rooter.

Note: The logfile can also be located within this folder Rooter$ at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\Rooter$

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

Hi Dakey,
Thanks for the reply. :)

kkarizz wrote:How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?

I've tried loading the Task Manager and it worked. Aside from being slow, I've encountered nothing else. Although I want to remove my YahooMessanger and install it once more? Or whatever you suggest that will best help me from getting infected with virus? Thank you once again. ^_^

Re: Locked Task Manager-still unsolved

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 15th, 2009, 6:46 am

Hi. :)

I've tried loading the Task Manager and it worked. Aside from being slow, I've encountered nothing else. Although I want to remove my YahooMessanger and install it once more? Or whatever you suggest that will best help me from getting infected with virus? Thank you once again. ^_^
OK thanks for the update and you're welcome! We will address the Yahoo issues shortly but please make no changes/install anything to your computer unless I advice so for the time being. Also do not use Yahoo Messenger either, thank you.

Random Access Memory Advice:
Total RAM: 382 MB (22% free)
Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB installed in my opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a small scanner(CrucialScan.exe)which is perfectly safe to download and run. Which will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

Norton/Symantec RT:

Please download the Norton Removal Tool and Save it to your Desktop.

  • Close all programs and double-click the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe then click Run
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Restart the computer if asked.
  • Then delete Norton_Removal_Tool.exe from your desktop.

Flash Disinfector:

  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Download/Run ComboFix:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • ComboFix Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi. Before I ran the combofix, I've noticed that everytime I boot, I always receive a notification of Cannot find RVHost.exe...... I wonder if it's a virus? But after running the HJT today, I've noticed it's not on the list anymore. I still think I've got the virus from YahooMessanger or if not from the flash drives. Hope you can give me advice.

Re: Locked Task Manager-still unsolved

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 17th, 2009, 6:58 am

Hi. :)

Avira AntiVir is reporting it is outdated, please check for updates.

I still think I've got the virus from YahooMessanger or if not from the flash drives. Hope you can give me advice.
I am not seeing any further indication of such a infection and your Flash Drives should be disinfected now plus no corrupted mount-points used by the aforementioned drives are in evidence from the logs provided.

A question if I may, have you set the below proxy setting yourself?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local

Next:

Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Java(TM) 6 Update 14
<-- We will update this in due course.
Yahoo! Messenger <-- You may reinstall this when I give the all clear.

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Custom ComboFix-Script:

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    Code: Select all
    File::
    c:\windows\popcinfot.dat

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0}]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue. If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform a Quick Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • Answer to my Proxy query.
  • ComboFix Log.
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi Dakey..

Already updated Avira. Thanks :)

Uhm, I don't receive any notification anymore 'bout the RVHost.exe. There's only one thing I've noticed with my files. Everytime I open any Microsoft Office docus, it duplicates? (e.g Rites of Anointing, duplicated- ~$ites of Anointing). I wonder what does it mean?

kkarizz wrote:Answer to my Proxy query.

Regarding the Proxy setting, nope. I haven't performed any.

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 19th, 2009, 7:13 am

Hi. :)

Everytime I open any Microsoft Office docus, it duplicates? (e.g Rites of Anointing, duplicated- ~$ites of Anointing). I wonder what does it mean?
OK try the advice in the following Microsoft - Help and Support article:-

How to install and to repair 2007 Office features

Regarding the Proxy setting, nope. I haven't performed any.
OK actually it should be fine to leave because there is nothing wrong with that setting. It is basically a default (not really a default persay but acts like one). Most of the time when that particular setting requires addressing is when it appears in conjunction with a bad proxy server which is not present on your system anyway. I was just erring on the side of caution.

New Java Installation:

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16. Click on Download.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe to install Java.

Next:

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this folder (if present):

C:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Now click on Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • Eset Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Re: Locked Task Manager-still unsolved

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 20th, 2009, 6:46 am

Hi. :)

Thank you so much. So far I haven't encountered any prob.
You're welcome!

Next:

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well. Plus bare in mind my prior advice about upgrading the presently installed RAM(Random Access Memory).

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in Combofix /u in the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image

OTC:

Please download OTC and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools(and logs created)
we used to clean your pc.

  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, Avira AntiVir automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above!

The below are advised updates but only apply them after you have addressed the RAM issue!

Optional update:

Their is a new service pack for XP, namely SP3. I advise you download/install this as it will increase the security side of your system., but only when you have addressed the Random Access Memory issue. For the time being just having XP Service Pack 2 is fine.

Download can be found here or the CD ordered for your country here <--scroll down to and click on 'How to obtain Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a CD'

Please read this Microsoft article before actually installing the aforementioned service pack.

Advised Optional Installation:

There is no sign of a software firewall installed on your system. Regardless if using a hardware type and or using the inbuilt Windows Service Pack 2/3 firewall this is a necessary application as it will also provide outbound protection where as the aforementioned do not.

I highly advise you download ONE of the following firewalls and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

This article is a excellent resource regarding the aforementioned firewalls: Understanding and Using Firewalls

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions, feel free to ask? If not stay safe!
