Thanks again for your diligent work :o).

I don't entirely remember what the Buddy Master Pro was for. I think my roomie used it to remove his name from someone else's yahoo messenger list. I thought he'd removed it long ago.

Buddy check was a program that would alert you when someone was on yahoo messenger.

Here's the look.txt file contents:

c:\windows\system32\reinstallbackups\0009\driverfiles\nielgfx.sys

Hi sarrah great work so far just a little more to do.

Set Your Computer to Show All Files/Folders.

  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer (Computer in Vista)..
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

Next.

Delete Files - Folders

We need to perform some manual clean up.
  • Right click on the Start...button.
  • Select Explore...from the menu.
  • Navigate to and find the following files and/or folders: if found, delete them.

    C:\windows\system32\reinstallbackups\0009\driverfiles\nielgfx.sys <<< File.

  • If you were unable to find or delete it, Please let me know in your next reply.

Next.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

In your next reply.

1. RSIT log.txt.

Re: Browser is being Hijacked

Unread postby Cypher » October 10th, 2009, 1:54 pm

Hi sarrah.
This file refuses to go lets try this.

Please go to Start > my computer > and double click on C.
Double click on "Windows"
Scroll down and double click on "System32"
Scroll down and double click on "drivers"
Scroll down to "nielgfx.sys", then right click on it and delete.

Please let me know if you were able to find and delete it.

1. RSIT log.txt
2. let me know if you were able to find and delete the file.

Thanks!

1) I looked in the folder you specified, and that nielgfx.sys wasn't there.

2) here's the RSIT log.txt file

Hi sarrah.

Disable Windows Defender

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools at the top.
  • Under Settings, click on Options.
  • Under Automatic scanning, uncheck (untick) Automatically scan my computer (recommended) box.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck (untick) Use real-time protection (recommended) box.
  • Click on the Save button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • Note: Please do not Re-enabling this until i tell you to do so.

Next.

Disable Ad-Aware

Please disable Ad-Aware as it may interfere with repairs.

  • Click the Settings button, Auto Scans tab, and under "Scan on Ad-Aware startup",
  • be sure both selections for "No automated scan" are checked (green).
  • Then click Save and close Ad-Aware.
  • Note: Please do not Re-enabling this until i tell you to do so.

Next.

Please go to Start > my computer > and double click on C.
Double click on "Windows"
Scroll down and double click on "System32"
Scroll down and find "reinstallbackups" then right click on it and Delete.
Note: Do not delete the System32 folder.

Thanks again for wading through all this for me!

I disabled Windows Defender as instructed, but when I went into Ad-Aware, there was no tab that was labeled "Auto Scans." I've never had Ad-Aware set up to auto scan. I just would open and use it now and then. So maybe that is why there wasn't that tab. I looked for anything that said automated scan or scan on start up, and there weren't any options for that, though when I shut down the program it asked if I was sure I wanted to disable Ad-Watch live and close Ad-Aware. I said yes to that.

Here's the RSIT log.txt file:

Re: Browser is being Hijacked

Unread postby Cypher » October 15th, 2009, 7:14 am

Hi sarrah.
Thanks again for wading through all this for me

Your welcome :)
I need a bit more information about a file on your system.

Please download the Registry Search Tool from here : http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
(scroll down-there are also other tools on the page)
Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.
Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

nielgfx.sys

then hit Ok
It may take a while to run.
It will tell you when it's done and offer to have you look at the file.
Say Yes, and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply.

:D Thanks!
You know where all the handy gizmos are don't you? lol
(I'm mentally sending you chocolate chip cookies for all your work!)

I'll post the results of the reg search below, but just wanted to update you on performance of the PC. I hadn't had any browser hijacks since I installed the HOSTS file (which was before I posted here), but I had one pop up tonight. Blah. (I did what I typically did in the past--pulled up task manager and killed the browser from there so I didn't have to click on the pop up.)

Reg search results:

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "nielgfx.sys" 10/17/2009 1:07:26 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

Hi sarrah.
I'm mentally sending you chocolate chip cookies for all your work!

Much appreciated thank you ;)

Please make sure that Ad-Aware and Windows Defender are still Disabled.

Next.

Re-run OTM
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Paste the following code under the Image area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4211899851-752039772-3115759267-1008\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603]
    "002"=-
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

1. OTM log.
2. RSIT log.txt

Ok, here's the _otm moved file log. I'll post the RSIT one in a new post.

Unread postby Cypher » October 19th, 2009, 10:43 am

Hi sarrah.
this thing is tenacious isn't it!.

Malware will do all it can to stay around ;)

your latest set of logs are clean! :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Clean up with OTM

  • Double-click OTM.exe to start the program, This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can now delete the Registry Search Tool if it remains on your desktop.

Hide system files

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check (tick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Check (tick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close My Computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point

    1. Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
    2. On the Welcome Page, select Create a restore point. Click Next.
    3. Give this restore point a descriptive name and click Create.
    4. When done, click Close.

Warning: Do not clear infected System Restore points before creating a new System Restore point first!

Please read the above to create a new System Restore point first, then clear out the infected System Restore points.

Flush infected System Restore points

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
2. Select the System Restore tab.
3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
4. Click Apply.
5. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
6. Click OK.
7. Restart your computer.
Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
