No access to control panel/my computer/ files etc

Unread postby cmb21 » September 28th, 2009, 3:37 am

Hi,

I am having some serious problems with my laptop. I no longer have access to control panel, i cant get into my computer or any of the folders on the desktop. I started in safe mode and had access to my computer and all folders, but no access to control panel. In safe mode when i clicked on control panel a message box came up saying it couldnt find explorer.exe (but it wasnt the normal explorer, it had capitals in it and the exe was all capitals, .EXE)

Edit: Ok i had to get some data off my laptop as it was needed, i couldnt get it to recognise a cd, so i used my usb drive (yes i know i shouldnt), when i plugged it into my other pc, my anti virus came up with this...... Win32/Virut.NBP it removed the exe that was infected. Can this virut thing be fixed? Or do i need to reformat?

Here is the HiJackThis log. Any help is very much appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. The logs that you will be posting can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Let's run some scans to get more information about what might be going on with your computer...

Step 1

Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then right click dds.scr and select "Run as administrator" to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Step 2

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
  5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.

Right click on gmer.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it. It will start running a scan. If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt to run a full scan. Click Yes.

  • When done, you may receive another notice. Click OK.
  • Click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

If you receive no notice, click on the Scan button.

  • It will start scanning again.
  • When done, click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
  3. Gmer.txt

Hi,

We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreen
  1. When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
  2. Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:
    Image
  3. When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:
    Image
Please reply with those error messages! :)

Next, please try to boot your computer using "Last Known Good Configuration"...Tap F8 as your computer starts up, just as you would do if you were going to boot to Safe Mode. When the Boot Options Menu appears, please select "Last Known Good Configuration".

Please post the BSOD error code/messages and let me know if you are able to successfully boot your computer.

Also, please tell me if you have the Vista installation CD that came with your computer should we need it.

Hi,

lol, my laptop wont make up its mind.
I turned it on and got the BSOD, so i restarted selected do not reboot on system failure and when it restarted it went straight into windows......

I can access folders and files now, but if i click on Control Panel, it says "Application Not Found" and at the top of the message box it has 'Explorer.EXE'

I downloaded dds to my desktop, but when i right click there is no option to run as adminstrator. So i double click it and i get a message box that says "Windows cannot find 'cmd'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again"

I will try gmer.exe when i get home.

Thanks.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
