Computer is slow & freezes frequently :(

Unread postby Jotit » September 27th, 2009, 12:03 am

Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop and am running the Windows XP Home edition on it. For a while now, I have been experiencing a lot of issues with it. The response time for most operations is very slow (I can see each letter as it is being typed, in slo-mo), adding / ejecting a USB device takes ages, Google Chrome / IE hangs up and doesn't respond, the system tray buttons are missing. All-in-all, it's a terrible experience :(

I am posting the results of my HijackThis log below:

Hi Jotit,

Before we continue could you please answer one question, Are you aware that remote control software is installed on this computer? I see VNC is running and this would allow remote access to the computer, if you installed this and are aware then that is not a problem but if it has been installed without your knowledge then we need to know.

Please re-open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Download DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with DDS.txt and Attach.txt from the DDS scan into your next reply.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
