The other thread I have posted is in raltion to my laptop, this is a thread in regards to my desktop, just incase there was any confusion.

In response to the advice provided in this thread (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=45021) I have carried out and performed instructions up until the point where I run the Malwarebytes program.

I ran it, it found a load of infections, i clicked to remove these infections, it began doing so before the program crashed and forced a close. Continues to happen when I try to do it again.

My current hijackthis log file looks like this...

You have at least 2 logs here that you didn't reply to.
You have 3 days from my reply to answer me or this one will be closed too. If you need a bit more time let me know. We are a volunteer group and get to logs when we can.
Be sure to subscribe to the topic so you know when your replied to.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

It looks like you have been infected by a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus
uTorrent

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programmes.

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

I was sure I was rid of Azureus and uTorrent as they still no longer appear in my add/remove programs control panel, but i guess not?

I think i'll go with the backup/reformat/install option just to be sure!

Aswell as calling the bank etc.

Thanks for having a look at this.

Any advice as to avoiding this kind of stuff in future? I am fairly cautious and usually use the likes of AVG free and more recently zone alarm and i run regular checks with ad-aware/virus scans with AVG. I'd assume that it is the p2p programs that may have caused the problem?

Thanks!

Good call on the format and reinstall. It is the safest way.

As far as advice to stay clean.

Stay clear of Peer to peer files. There just not worth it.

Heres a few other things that should help.

Have your anti virus ready to install first thing when your done loading windows. I would suggest pulling the plug on the internet connection until it's installed and running.
________________________________________
Windows Updates
Be certain automatic updates is turned on for XP. - For Vista Or if you like to do it manually be sure to visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This requires internet explorer to do so.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Firewalls
A few words on Microsoft firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended).
3. Click OK.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Online armor Firewall

ZoneAlarm

Comodo If choosing this one be sure to
UNCHECK the following during installation

  • "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)",
  • "Install Comodo SafeSurf",
  • "Make Comodo my default search provider"
  • "Make Comodo Search my homepage"
  • Ask toolbar

SpywareBlaster

Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Browser settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

___________________________________
Download and Install a HOSTS File

Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Run HostsXpert
  • If Hosts file is Read Only, click on Make Writeable, otherwise move on to next stage.
  • Click Download button.
  • Click MVPs Hosts
  • Click Merge File
  • Press OK to download latest MVPs update and merge it with your Hosts.
  • When finished click File Handling
  • Click Make Read Only to secure your Hosts file.
  • Exit HostsXpert.

___________________________________
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
5. Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

_______________________________________
So many people are point and click crazy either because there naive or their in a rush.

Always watch closely to any software your installing. Even if you paid for it!!!
If they want to install something more than their program stop right there and investigate what it is they want to place on your computer.
If they give you the option not to install it choose that until you investigate it completely.
The more you install that you don't want or need the more you'll wish you didn't.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)

Thanks for all that! greatly appreciated.

I have an external HD i use to store all my music and back up photos etc... I'd assume a scan with AVG or other anti virus/malware progs would make sure it's safe to connect to a clean machine again?

I'll make sure to follow all your advice!

Thanks alot man!
