Hi VickieC,
I understand, work comes first, thanks for letting me know.
There are some additional things we can try to help free some resources, that could possibly speed up your computer.

Please read these instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions about or problems with, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Increase RAM
One of the best ways (and relatively inexpensive these days) to increase your computer's performance is to increase the amount of RAM.
You could see a dramatic difference in performance by doubling the amount of RAM you currently have installed.

There are some uneeded processes started when you boot your computer, we can keep these from starting and free some resources.

Step 1.
OTM
  1. Please download OTM.exe...by Old Timer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on OTM.exe to run it.
If you receive the "Open File - Security Warning", please press Run.
  3. Please copy and paste the text in the Code box below, into OTM's window (1).
See OTM screen image below as a reference
Warning: Do not type it out... errors could damage your machine.
    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-
    "QuickTime Task"=-
    "TkBellExe"=-
    "SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
    "AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
    "FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]

Please refer to this image when using OTM.exe

    Image
  4. Click on MoveIt! (2)
  5. The end results of the processing will be in 2 places:
    • The Results window on the right side of the OTM screen.
    • A log (text) file created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
  6. Copy all the text from the Results window... Open Notepad, paste the OTM results into the Notepad file, save it on your desktop.
  7. Click Exit (3) when done.
  8. Please paste the entire content from the OTM (Results) window (Notepad file) or the OTM log file, in your next reply.
NOTE: If your computer did not automatically reboot... please reboot it (normally) now!

Step 2.
Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  3. Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. New RSIT log.txt file contents
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Re: Computer dragging bad

Unread postby VickieC » September 9th, 2009, 9:27 pm

Hi Wngman,

I have performed the above tasks. My computer seems to be a little better. I haven't used it for for a couple of minutes since running the tasks. I will use it for a little while and see how it goes and then I'll come back and edit with how it is going.

Thanks for your help!

Hi VickieC,
Glad things are a little better... there are still some things to be done.
I have a question... the slowness or dragging of your computer... is this in general or only when you are accesssing the Internet?

Please read these instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions about or problems with, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.

  4. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  5. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is fine.
  6. Make sure the first two check boxes are selected.
  7. Click on OK ... then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
