Hi,
I didn't do anything with the host file.

Did you follow my below instructions?

1 - Replace Hosts File
Please download the MVPS Hosts File fron HERE

Note: This download includes a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP then copy the included updated HOSTS file to the proper location. For more information please see the readme.txt included in the download.

  • To use: double-click on mvps.bat
  • Important: Windows Vista requires special instructions:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

Note: if prompted by one of your Security programs about this file, allow it to run. Also if
you are prompted by a Security program about changes to the HOSTS file = allow them.

For more information, please visit HERE

Your hosts file is infected based on Kaspersky report
Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Infected: Trojan.Win32.FraudPack.rdo 1

Now i would like you to do the following:

1 - Using Window Explorer to Navigate Files and Folders

Navigating and Deleting a File
  • Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Next, please proceed with following:

2 - Replace Hosts File
Please download the MVPS Hosts File fron HERE

3 - Status Check
Please post:

  • New HijackThis log after executing the above
  • Inform my goodself if you have problem replacing your hosts file

I did follow the instructions previously to replace the hosts file. I now went in and deleted the hosts file and then ran MVPS again. This is what the blue screen that came up said:

mvps.bat started from Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\Melissa Richardson\Desktop\Problem\hosts\

The system cannot find the file specified.
Access is denied.

THE MVPS HOSTS FILE IS NOW UPDATED

Previous version saved and renamed to HOSTS.MVP
Press any key to continue . . .

This is what is in the directory: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Name (Type)
hosts.bakup (BAKUP File)
hosts.new (NEW File)
lmhosts (SAM File)
networks (File)
protocol (File)
services (File)

I ran HJT again and it seems the hosts file is still there. Here is the log:

Re: Not sure what's wrong...cannot run taskmgr or system resotre

Unread postby francis327 » September 9th, 2009, 1:30 am

Hi, thank you for confirming with me.

Please do the following.

1 - Hosts File
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  2. Delete Name (Type)
  3. Delete hosts.bakup (BACKUP File)
  4. Rename hosts.new to hosts
    • To rename, right click at the file, choose Properties, a box will appear, rename the file from there, choose Apply, then Ok
  5. Finally, right click hosts, choose Open, select Notepad, the file will be open with notepad.
  6. Copy and paste the content of the file in your next reply.

2 - HijackThis Fix Check
Please run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
O1 - Hosts: 69.249.196.166 idenupdate.motorola.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 4-open-davinci.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 securitysoftwarepayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 privatesecuredpayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure.privatesecuredpayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 getantivirusplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure-plus-payments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.getantivirusplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.secure-plus-payments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.getavplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.securesoftwarebill.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure.paysecuresystem.com

Now please close ALL open windows except HijackThis and press "Fix checked".
Then please exit HijackThis.

3 - Status Check
Please post in next reply:

  • Content of hosts file

I was able to delete the one file you asked, but could not rename the other file. It gave me the error that there was already another file with that name even though there was nothing else named that in the folder.

I ran the HJT scan only and did the fix selected. As you can see below, the hosts are still there. As for my directory, here are the contents:

hosts(NEW File)
69.249.196.166 idenupdate.motorola.com
lmhosts(SAM File)
networks(File)
protocol(File)
services(File)

When I ran this I still got the same window that pops up every time stating:
For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator.'

Re: Not sure what's wrong...cannot run taskmgr or system resotre

Unread postby francis327 » September 9th, 2009, 10:53 am

Hi,
Seems like the nasty thing don't want to go away, let's get rid of it another way round.

1 - ComboFix Script
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2 - Hosts Expert
Please download HostsXpert
Save it to your desktop.
If you have a 3rd party "unzipping" program...(WinRar, Winzip, etc) ... use that to extract files to your desktop, go to step 6.
  1. Right click on HostsXpert.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard", screen.
  3. Click on the Browse button... click on Desktop... then click OK.
  4. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  5. Once extracted, HostsXpert folder will open.
  6. Double click on HostsXpert.exe to start it.
  7. On the left side panel... if the top button is labeled "Make Writable?"... press it. (The text of the button will change to "Make Read-Only?)
  8. Now... click on the Restore MS Hosts File...button.
    • Reply "OK" to the "Press OK to Restore Microsofts original Hosts file"...prompt. screenshot (if needed)... see red boxed button.
    • Go back to the top button labeled..."Make Read-Only?... click it. Now the text should read "Make Writable?".
  9. Press the Editing...button.
  10. Press the Copy to Clipboard...button.
    • Select Copy Hosts file...from the menu.
    • Click "OK" to the "Copied to Clipboard"... message.
  11. Exit HostsXpert.
  12. Open Notepad...paste the contents of Clipboard into the opened window.
  13. Save the Notepad file...call it..."hostfile.txt"...save it to a convenient place.
Paste the contents of the hostfile.txt file into your next reply.

3 - Status Check
To post in next reply:

  • ComboFix log
  • hostfile.txt
  • New HijackThis log

Unread postby francis327 » September 10th, 2009, 11:25 am

Hi, log looks clean to me.

A few things to take note.

Update Adobe Application
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please download the latest Adobe (Acrobat) Reader HERE to your PC's desktop.
  • Uninstall Older version of Adobe(Acrobat) Reader via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Install the new downloaded updated software.
If you prefer a smaller program, you can give Foxit a try

2 - OTC - Clean up
  1. Please download OTC.exe...by Old Timer from GeeksTo Go!
    Save it to your desktop..
  2. Right click on OTC.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. When Windows prompts, please allow it.
  3. Click on CleanUp!
  4. When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so at this time.

3 - ATF-Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Any other issue/problem you are facing?
Let me know in next reply.

Hi, thanks for being with me along the way while i attempt to clean your system.
You did a really great job in executing all my instruction and i should give credit to you for the good work you have done and the cooperation that you have given to me.

Well done! :thumbright:

1 - Delete ComboFix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Please note that the space between combofix and /u is needed

It seems to me that... you appear to be clean
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

Step 1. Create a new System Restore Point: If your not sure how to do this, you can read these tutorials:
Method for XP:

Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Step 2. You may download some free programs, that will help improve your computer's security.
These kinds of protection programs (adware, spyware, etc...) tend to overlap in coverages.
Many feel that having a "layered" protection scheme, is beneficial. Each individual has to decide what works best for their situation.
There are many available...here are a few you can look into, if you want. :)

SpywareBlaster 4.0
Download Spyware Blaster 4.0
A SpywareBlaster tutorial can be found Here.

WinPatrol
Download WinPatrol
Information about how WinPatrol works, is available Here.
(The free version of WinPatrol...does not provide any real-time protection)

Firetrust SiteHound
Download Firetrust SiteHound
Information of Firetrust SiteHound is available at its homepage

Step 3. Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly.
Avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can also check if any application updates are needed for your PC.
Secunia Software Inspector - Copyright 2002-2008 Secunia.
F-secure Health Check - Copyright F-Secure Corporation.

Step 4. Visit Microsoft often
Keep on top of critical updates , as well as other updates for your computer.
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP
Using Windows Update for Windows XP
Microsoft Update Home

Step 5. Read
Please check out these articles:
