Windows Police Pro may have caused this

Unread postby FaithB1965 » August 30th, 2009, 5:34 pm

Hello-
I am working on my neighbor's computer. Two days ago, they started having trouble with Windows Police Pro. I'm not sure that it caused all these problems, as I just started to try to help them. When you power the device on, you get anywhere between 9 and 24 popup boxes with "error" in the title bar, and just listing these types of files:
c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe
c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll
control_rundll
c:\windows\system32\appwiz.cpl

I believe there is one error box for every program that's trying to load. You cannot access the registry or command prompt; and many programs won't load.

They had Macaffee on the pc--but it seems to have been either uninstalled or rendered useless. Last night, we downloaded Spyware Doctor; and it seems to have gotten rid of the Police Pro; yet the PC is still very messed up. We cannot load or run many programs; and I'm surprised that internet is even functioning on it.

Any ideas or evaluations you have from the attached log would be most welcome. I am pasting the log from Hijackthis below. thanks so much for looking at this.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log

Thanks for responding! I realize you must be very busy and appreciate what you do!

The logs shouldn't have changed since the original ones we posted--no changes have been made to the system since then. (I believe that's what the instructions say.) Also, I received a response this morning telling me to go and download "malware bytes" with a link and run a full scan. (Although I do not see the post anymore...) Do you not what me to do that now?

I didn't post that. My guess is what happened was another helper here at Malware Removal responded to your thread without seeing my first response. They then must have seen my response and deleted the post that they made, not knowing that you had already seen their post.

================================

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these vendors NOW:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic
2)avast! 4 Home Edition

Download and install only one!

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://windiwsfsearch.com

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://windiwsfsearch.com

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://windiwsfsearch.com/ie6.html

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://windiwsfsearch.com

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step # 2 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click No.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
  • Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Well, I have good news, bad news, and seemingly worse news.

Your first item was to download and install anti-virus. I'd actually been trying to do that for some time before getting hijack this. the computer wouldn't run the install procedures for any of the ones I tried (Macaffee & Symanted). He did have Macaffee running before on it--I'm not sure if the police pro removed it? In any case, the executables wouldn't run I downloaded the second one on your list, and believe it or not, it installed! (That's the good news)

I removed the registry keys through hijack this that you requested successfully.

I downloaded dds.scr and gmer.zip.

The anti virus install requested a reboot, so I let it--after getting all the files downloaded for the next step; as all the programs had to be closed to run them anyway. (That's when the trouble began) The machine is running slower and slower, and it took three "boots" of the computer to get it so we had a start button and icons on the screen. It takes exceedingly long to boot up. (15 minutes or so)

When you click on dds.exe, it comes up with two error boxes (I believe stating the executable that it's trying to run). this is consistent with the boot up error boxes... it seems to repeat in error boxes everything that it's trying to do. Some things it will run, some it will not.

I ran gmer, and got to the point of doing the scan. it ran successfully until it was scanning the hard drive. Because this is my neighbor/friend's machine, I was telling him how to get the file log saved when it was done. The screen went blank and never came back. We believe the program kept running; but three hours later, the drive had stopped the real "work" and the computer sat.

He rebooted the machine and tried to run it again. the scan started, but after a while (he told me this, I wasn't there for this part), the machine shut down to "prevent corruption"

I'm not sure if it's booting up at all now, and will be talking to him today to see the state it's in and will post that as soon as I know.

If the machine will actually boot, are the gmer logs of any use without the entire c scan?

If the computer can't boot into Normal Mode when the computer is turned on, try booting into Last Known Good Configuration to see if that helps.

To do that, when the computer boots up continually tap F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, then hit enter.

If the machine can still boot up into Normal Mode successfully, then go ahead and post the GMER Log (if available, it should be on the Desktop, if it was saved there. It's name is gmer.txt), any information it can give us will be helpful.

Once the computer is booted up, I'd like for you to do the following:

Step # 1 Download and run Win32kDiag

Please save this file to your desktop. Double-click on it to run a scan. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. GMER Log (if possible)
2. Win32kDiag.txt
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log

First, I thank you very sincerely for your persistance and efforts! I apologize for taking so long between posts, but the problem was with my neighbor's computer, and there was time lag getting back and forth to the machine.

I believe the Windows Police Pro was definitely the cause of all the problems. It tricked my neighbor into thinking that his McAffee needed to be deinstalled and reinstalled. the minute he deinstalled it, I think a multitude of viruses (as well as Police Pro) took over.

We were unable to re-install any virus software until I tried one of the two you recommended. That one installed (where Symantec & McAffee wouldn't install at all).

After he finally got the machine up in safe mode, the virus scanning software did the trick. It took a very long time to get through everything; but it has repaired everything. The regedit works; you can get into the control panel and add/remove programs--and all the things that were giving errors before are working fine.

He's still got the PC Tools Spyware Doctor as well as the Anti-virus you recommended. he's running full scans every day now--as I think he's gunshy after almost losing the machine.

I can ask him for a new hijack this log if you want to see it, but as far as he is concerned he is all set. I know you are busy helping a lot of other people, so you can close this one out if you'd like.

Once again, I sincerely appreciate all you have done for us! THANK YOU!

Good to hear that running Avast solved the problems that your neighbor's computer was having. :)

I would still like to see a fresh HiJackThis Log and an Uninstall List as well (instructions below).

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Thanks for the HJT log, I still need to see the Uninstall List though.

Thanks. :)

Unread postby km2357 » September 11th, 2009, 1:51 am

Thanks. :)

Even though running Avast cleared up the major problems with computer, there still may be some malicious leftovers that we want to get rid of, so let's started doing just that. :)

Step # 1: Remove Poker programs
From your log I can see you've installed poker programs. A lot of poker programs are infected/can infect you with malware.

I would advise you to go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following poker program(s):

Doyles Room Poker

Full Contact Poker (remove only)

Full Tilt Poker

GamesGrid Poker

HollywoodPoker.com (remove only)

Pacific Poker

Paradise Poker

PartyPoker

PlayersOnly Poker

PokerRoom.com (remove only)

Here are links to some poker sites regarded as safe for your reference.
1. http://www.pokerstars.net/ - This is a free to use/play site with play money.
2. http://www.pokerstars.com/ - This is a free to use/play site with play money and real money.

Step # 2: Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

MyWay Search Assistant

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 3 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u16.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove the following old versions of Java:

  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 4: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 5 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The MalwareBytes' Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

I apologize for not responding back earlier. I think I mentioned I am helping out a neighbor; and they are out of town for a few days--so I am not able to get back to their machine yet. As soon as they are back, I will respond to you!

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and outstanding assistance!
