We are having a redirect issue and suspect malware. When we perform a search, when we clcik on one of the links, we are redirected to a site called "hotamusement" or receive the yahoo 999 error. We have used malwarebytes and ad-aware (safemode scans as well) and both come up clean. Thanks!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi glcooly and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Reset Host File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform a Quick Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

I made the bat file, ran it and performed the malwarebytes scan as directed. The scan came up clean. The problem still exists. To test it, I performed a yahoo search for the word calvetti. When I click on any one of the search results, I get redirected to www.amusement.net....and then to some other site. So the redirect is still occuring.

Here is the malwarebutes log:

Re: suspected Malware Issue - Hijackthis log attached

Unread postby glcooly » August 31st, 2009, 9:45 am

When I ran the RSIT, the first thing it said before performing the scan was "For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this....etc."

here is the log file:

Re: suspected Malware Issue - Hijackthis log attached

Hi :)

A question if I may:

It appears there are the remnants of a anti-malware removal application on your system that would only be advised by a colleague of mine. Have you received assistance recently and or downloaded and ran something yourself such as ComboFix?

Viewpoint Software Advice:

This is just to make you aware of the nature of the aforementioned applications. Though not exactly classed as malware they do have some undersirible characteristics. However there is not point uninstalling as the AOL software applications you have installed, next time used will download/install the aforementioned again with out your knowledge. Isn't that nice of AOL and their applications

Next:

We need to uninstall a few applications because they are out of date and pose a security risk and a means for malware to either infect or re-infect a system. We will update Adobe in due course.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 8.1.2
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Disable Spybot S&D TeaTimer's Registry Guard:

This is so it does not interfere with the malware removal process, you may re-enable this when I give the all clear.

  • If you have version 1.5 or 1.6, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  • Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  • Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Note: The above must be completed before proceeding any further!

Host File Reset/Replace:

Please Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.

The root of the system drive would be a ideal location EG: C:\

  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the programme.
  • Check to see if top button on left hand side says Make Writable?
    • If it does. click on it then proceed to next instruction.
    • If not, just proceed to next instruction
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File to restore your Hosts file to its default condition
  • When prompted to confirm, click OK.
  • Click on the Download button (lower left hand side)
    • Click on MVPs Hosts... button.
    • Click on Replace button.
    • Press OK in the box that pops up. (HostsXpert will now download and update your Hosts file)
  • When finished.
    • Click on File Handling button.
    • Click on Make Read Only? to secure it against infection.
  • Exit the programme.

F-Secure Blacklight:

Please download Blacklight from here to your desktop.

or

Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save it to your desktop from there.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert
Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Anwser to my CF question.
  • Blacklight Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

I uninstalled the programs you listed and changed the setting of spybot as well. Rebooted and then downloaded HostsXpert. I got to the point of running the program and when I did I received this error message:

Error: Cannot create file c:\windows\system32\drivers\ETC\hosts

When I click ok, it shuts down HostsXpert and I cannot continue. I do not proceed to the final step of running the F Secure blacklight since I was not able to complete the previous step as you directed. I thought it might be better to wait for further guidance before doing anything else.

As far as the combofix. I had a friend of mine that supposedly knows a bit about computers tell me to run that prior to me finding this site. After researching around the web, I found that combofix is not recommended to run without expert assistance, so I uninstalled it and punched my friend. I then ran hijackthis and posted my log to get expert help, so I am sorry if that ended up causing more harm than good.

Hi :)

OK it is possible a feature of your Symantec security applications is blocking the running of HostsXpert.

Please temporally disable all the Symantec secuirty, how to be can read here.

Then try running HostsXpert again, reboot the system and re-enable all protection if they have not done so.

Let myself know the outcome please, thank you.

Hi :)

OK try this please:

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to Explore)

Navigate to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open the file with Notepad, (Right click, select Notepad and make sure that the option to "Always use this application to open this type of file" is NOT selected).

Delete the contents of the infected host file(if anything present) then goto

File > Save As, ensure the "Save as file type:" is All files and not *.txt , then click Save. Accept the warning that this will overwrite the existing file.

Then try running HostsXpert again.

Next:

Do please run the Blacklight scan as outlined here and post the log in your next reply.

I opened explorer and found the area in question, however, when i get to the ETC folder under the system 32 driver folder, there is not a "hosts" file for me to open to delete anything. The only files in there are: lmhosts, networks, protocol and services

In other words, there was no file for me to open with notepad and delete anything. What should I do now? HostsXpert still does the same thing and I still get the error:

Error: Cannot create file c:\windows\system32\drivers\ETC\hosts

Now, I will add that in the directions you listed for me to run this, you tell me to click on the box in the corner that says "Make writeable?" It is there and in red and when I clcik on it, nothing seems to happen. I don't get the feeling that anything changed when i clicked on it.

in case this helps, I just tried a a search in yahoo for delta. The first result in the list was for delta airlines main web page. When I clciked on it, this is the file that came up to redirect me (I was able to capture it this time because it took a long time for the page to go from the one listed below to the actual redirected site):

http://amuseworld.net/search.php?s=2&q= ... HAA~~&pe=0

Eventually it then moved me to:

http://www.lowfares.com/airfare?t=ts_ef ... gn=Airfare
