Hello droidnoise,

Things look better. Good work. :)

Print/Copy instructions for reference please

Step 1
Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Step 2
Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
  • Go here to Update Java
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update16
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 6 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) if present
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Step 3
Update Internet Explorer
Please visit the link below to get Internet Explorer 8 if you would like the current version:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/intern ... fault.aspx

Step 4
Please open HijackThis
Run and Save Scan

Post
New HijackThis
Any problems and how computer is acting now

Thank you

IE was unable to update (This was the case a while back, which is why I'm using Firefox)
I am also getting a warning on re-start that Windows Defender was "unable to initialize".
New Java and Adobe are fine. Also, just curious; In C:/Windows I have hundreds of files that begin $NtUninstall What are those all about?

Hello droidnoise,

Thanks for the log and information.
*Print or Copy all instructions please*

Your questions
....Windows Defender was "unable to initialize
Also, just curious; In C:/Windows I have hundreds of files that begin $NtUninstall What are those all about?

1.Windows Defender is not needed, as you have CA Security Suite; which does the same job and more.
2. $NtUninstall are Installed with each Windows update. These are usually hidden files.
In Explorer-> Click Tools-> Folder Options-> View-> Select Do Not show Hidden Files and Folders --Select Hide Protected Operating System Files
Answer yes, if prompted after clicking Apply. Then OK and window will close.

Disabling Programs
You have one (or more) of these programs running on your machine. As it is extra, it needs turned off.

Windows Defender

Please do the following:

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Select Tools then Options
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options & uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended)
  • Select Save

Fix with HijackThis
Open HijackThis with all other windows closed.
Select Scan Only
Place a Check in the following if present:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Repair or Install Internet Explorer
Please visit this link: How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows Vista and Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Follow the instructions given there.

Run chkdsk
  • Got to Start, Run and type cmd and hit Enter
  • When the command window comes up, type: chkdsk c:
  • hit Enter again.
  • Maximize the command window, and wait for the scan to finish.
  • Read the results carefully to see if it says that it found problems with your file system.
IF it has found any problems with your file system,
  • Go To Start, Run and type cmd
  • hit Enter
  • Type this into the command window at the prompt:
      chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
  • hit Enter
  • You will get a message that the volume is locked, and a request to do the repair on Reboot.
  • Answer Y
  • Then type exit to close the Command window.
  • Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
  • It will scan again and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.

After it reboots, run the first sequence again (without the /F parameter), and see if it still shows an error.
Tell me what it found originally, and if there was a problem, whether the final sequence showed no errors.
It's possible that the chkdsk c: /F sequence may have to be run on reboot twice to pick up everything.

HijackThis
Please close all windows
Open HijackThis
Select Scan and Save log

Post
Information from chkdsk
New HijackThis
Any more problems remaining?

Thank you

Windows Defender would not open ( I get the previously described error message) so I removed the program. I don't get the error message on restart anymore but I do get a request to send Microsoft a report concerning problems with CAPP...etc.

Fixed items from Hijack list

I could find no remnants of IE on the computer. The support procedures required that I first "open Internet Explorer". So...? I believe I had IE6. Should we download that and then upgrade?

Ran chkdsk c: and chkdsk c: /F three times and it still seems to find "problems with the file system" but does not list them. BTW, The hard drive is only 1 year old, if it makes any difference.

Is it perhaps time to just wipe the hard drive and rebuild? I was warned that that may be the only solution, although performance-wise everything does appear OK at the moment. I just don't want to waste any more of your time if it's a lost cause.

Thanks,

Hello droidnoise,

Thank you for your reply and information.
Yes, we could try to continue, yet since you had a warning that a Reformat and Reinstall may be necessary and from what I have gathered, continuing to find the whys could be tedious. Since you are willing to do so, I believe this is best at this point. We may not know what caused things to do as they have (ie: Internet Explorer gone etc.) Below is a link to read on how to properly Reformat and Reinstall an operating system.

Re-format and Reinstall

I'll respect you decision to do a Re-format and Reinstall.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that probably help:

When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Windows XP Clean install

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

  • Set correct settings for files
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check Display content of system folders
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK

  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

    Here are few FREE alternatives:

  • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
NOTE: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

    Here are few FREE alternatives:
  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. Here are two tutorials: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide.
  • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:Firefox or Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints >Malware Complaints<. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!

Thank you
