Unread postby Phibson » January 15th, 2006, 8:30 am

I am running windows XP and over the past few weeks I have noticed that my machine is running slow. My norton anti virus is not showing up any trojans or virus. I attach a HJ log and any help will be greatly appreciated.

phibson,

-----------------------------------------------------------
Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a, so we are both not wasting our time.
An unpatched Windows XP will get re-infected in minutes on the net, and we will never finish.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.

AFTER updating your machine to SP1a, proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable A-Squared Guard
- Open a-square
- Click on Configure Background-Guard
- Deselect Enable background guard on system startup
- Close window
- Close a-square
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HiJackThis.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ewido
From the system tray, Right-click the system tray icon and Uncheck real time protection.
or From within Ewido -
Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://search.looksmart.com/p/search?pi=lstb2&tv=1

phibson,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Update Your Windows XP.

Let me know how it goes.
