It will not let me run the program. I saved it like you said, but when I try to run it it does nothing. I deleted everything you told me to.

Mike,
Change the name to Mike-setup.exe and see if it lets you install it. (I'm assuming from what you told me it won't let you install it.)
If it lets you install but not run it, we can rename it after installation and run it from C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware\
We have lots of tools left if it doesn't work.

It is downloaded, but it will not run. I click on it and nothing happens. This virus has also made it so I can not open a PDF. I can not go to Adobe and download it either. It is driving me crazy.

Mike,
Using My Computer, navigate to this folder : C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Antimalware\
Click View, choose Details
Highlight mbam.exe and change the name to myscan.exe
If it will scan, have it remove everything it finds and lets have a look at the log.

Next tool we can try. Be sure to rename during the download/save operation.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!!
If you don't know how to disable your antivirus, stop and ask
  • Download ComboFix from here. Choose Save, rename it Mike.exe and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
A copy is located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

Let me know how it goes.

mike,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run a File Search
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "c:\windows\system32\uac" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
GMER
  • Download GMER by GMER from here
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning then
    • Click the rootkit tab
    • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
  • Click on the >>> tab
  • This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
  • Click on the Autostart tab
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic
Also include the contents of look.txt

When you are sending information to this forum, always please use Notepad to copy or paste, never MS Word or Wordpad.

mike,
-----------------------------------------------------------
You still have TWO antivirus programs. We must get rid of one of them.

Remove Program(s) Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

McAfee
Network Associates

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

I had already uninstalled McAfee. I found another folder while digging to find where it still was. There was a folder called network associates which had the McAfee contents in there.

mike,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_07
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 6
Adobe Reader 8.1.3

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
Scroll down - It is currently the 5th item on the page (the page changes often), called JRE 6 Update 16
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation version.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

If you would prefer a much simpler and smaller PDF reader (1.5Mb vs. 27Mb), that will run from a flash drive, you could try Sumatra here: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/download.html
It also does not have the vulnerabilities that have shown up in many versions of Adobe Reader.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

mike,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O16 - DPF: PowerBuilder DW Control & JDBC - http://us-tx-exp-02:8080/exponline/PSDWC70.CAB
O23 - Service: McAfee Framework Service (McAfeeFramework) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe (file missing)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type
McAfeeFramework <==note there are no spaces. That's not a mistake.
in the box provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.
Sign in to your usual account.
Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file/folder (if it still is present):
C:\Program Files\Network Associates\

Let me know how the machine is running.
