Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thanks, Michael

Hello Michael, thanks for the reply :)

Right, for some reason, Hijackthis won't open any more...probably something to do with the virus, because Malwarebytes anti-Malware won't open anymore either...I copied it to the desktop, re-named it, but nothing works.

When I'm on the internet, it either doesn't let the web page open, shuts the browser or redirects me to advertising pages.

A program called PC Antispyware 2010 has installed on my computer, and when I went to remove it from Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel, it shut my computer down.

Just recently, I've started getting voice overs on the PC, which sound like movie trailers and cooking programs :|

I tried doing a System Restore, but there were no earlier dates available to choose.

In the bottom right corner, i have a little red circle with a white X shaped cross, which displays bubble which indicates that my computer is infected...not sure if this is genuine or the virus.

Anything you can do to help would be fantastic.

Thanks...Tom.

Punkbuster warning

I see you have Punkbuster installed. This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do.

Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Download and Run Gmer

Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/download.php

Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
If no warning....
Click the Rootkit/Malware tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Click the >>> tab. This will open up all available tabs for you.
Click the Autostart tab then the scan button. Once its done click the Copy button and paste it into a new notepad document. Save that document to your desktop please.

Please post your thoughts on PunkBuster, the 2 RSIT logs, and the GMER log. Thanks!

I've tried many times, and re-downloaded RSIT again but it won't give me info.txt :|

With GMER, I've let it scan 5 times, and each time it completely jams and freezes my computer, but i'll keep trying. :)

We can get rid of punkbuster :)

I already uninstalled Forstwire and Bittorrent, don't know why there still in the log :|, but they are gone!

Thanks...Tom.

Before we start

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Boot.ini Check

I would like to check the current state of the Boot.ini file to check if it is corrupted or not as follows:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <----Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
xcopy C:\boot.ini "%userprofile%\desktop\" /h
attrib -s -h "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini"
ren "%userprofile%\desktop\boot.ini" bootini.txt
Del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Look.bat" [I]<-- Make sure to include the quotations]
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Look.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed and produce a notepad text file named bootini on your desktop.

To get info.txt do the following:

Go to Start > Run > and type what is in bold below:

C:\RSIT\info.txt

a log should open, please post that.

As GMER does not seem to be working on your system, lets try another tool.

Scan with Rooter

Please download Rooter.exe by Eric_71 to your desktop.

  • Double click on Rooter.exe to start the application.
  • Now click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is completed a text file called Rooter.txt will appear on your desktop, post the contents in your next reply.
  • Now click on Close button to exit Rooter.

Note: The logfile can also be located within this folder Rooter$ at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\Rooter$

Please post bootini.txt info.txt and rooter.txt

Good, they all seemed to be okay.

I actually have all my personal files on an external hard drive...can these be attacked from the Malware removal?

Rooter.txt was called Rooter_1.txt and automatically opened and didn't actually save but I saved it anyway...surely it's the same thing :)

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have Very Dangerous infections on this machine.
These allow outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can try to clean the infected files off the computer, but we cannot be sure that the infection has not caused irreparable damage to the operating system as a whole. In that instance, even after a attempted removal of the infections, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to Reformat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have backdoors and keyloggers, the worst kinds.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to Reformat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Because you already have most of your important files backed up, I highly suggest that you reformat and reinstall.

Please let me know what you decide.

Woowee, I didn't realise it was this bad :(

If re-formatting and re-installing as soon as possible is the best option then we'll do that, but I'll choose whatever you recommend as the safest and best option.

Thanks...Tom.

Yeah, I highly recommend that you reformat and reinstall.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that will probably help.

Reformatting Windows XP by wng_z3r0
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Windows XP Clean install

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti-virus programs:
    Avast
    Avira
    AVG Free
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software everyday. If you do not allow your anti virus software to update then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Comodo <-- Install the Firewall as a standalone and make sure not to install any tool-bars.
    Kerio
    ZoneAlarm
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
    WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.
  • Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
    WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Although every browser gets exploited by malware, certain programs are exploited not as much. It is important that you keep your browser up-to-date. Try using a different browser instead:
    Firefox
    Opera
  • Bookmark this general cleanup link - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (bookmark please) this link for tips & tricks:
    Help! My computer is slow
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I presume that the guide there is for Windows XP Media Center Edition as well!?

And I haven't got a Genuine Windows CD that it asks for there (top link)...what I do have is a pack that PC World gave me when I bought the computer, which has a Microsoft sticker on a piece of paper in it. Is this anything to do with it?

Could you also tell me how to set up a firewall on Mozilla Firefox please...Thanks :)

Yes, that guide above should also work for your type of Windows XP.

And I haven't got a Genuine Windows CD that it asks for there (top link)...what I do have is a pack that PC World gave me when I bought the computer, which has a Microsoft sticker on a piece of paper in it. Is this anything to do with it?

To me, that sounds like your windows activation code. You might need that to reinstall your OS. The reinstallation CD may be located in that pack from PC World. There is also another possibility, the disk can be already installed on your computer on a seperate partition, which means that you don't have a disk, but Windows XP is located on the hard drive. If this is the case, I would read this guide, How to Reformat and Reinstall your Operating System

Could you also tell me how to set up a firewall on Mozilla Firefox please...Thanks :)

You shouldn't need to set up the firewall for specifically Mozilla Firefox. When you install the firewall, it should work for internet explorer too, or any browser you may choose.
