Hi :)

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

GooredFix:

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Next:

Please download OTM to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Code: Select all

  • Return to OTM, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTM.

Reset Internet Explorer:

  • Start Internet Explorer 7
  • Click the Tools menu, choose Internet Options
  • On the Advanced tab, click Reset
  • In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • GooredFix Log.
  • OTM Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Hi :)

Unable to start internet explorer in order to reset it. Tried starting it with no addons but tools menu doesn't appear.

would upgrading to Explorer8 help?
OK not to worry, malware had disabled IE access we can try to repair IE7(basically this is re-downloading/installing) and or consider a upgrade in due course once I have ascertained malware is no longer a issue with your machine

rsit didn't generate info.txt this time only log.txt above
That is fine, the instructions I posted will only create the one log.

F-Secure Blacklight:

Please download Blacklight from here to your desktop.

or

Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save it to your desktop from there.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert
Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. <-- Please use FF.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered? Apart from IE being inactive.
  • BlackLight Log.
  • ESET Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log. <-- I do not need to see a new RSIT log at this time but leave it on the desktop for the time being.

Hi :)

Hello Dakeyras, many thanks for persevering with this!

No other symptoms or problems found after following your last instructions.
Not a problem and you are welcome!

OK the logs look good so let proceed as follows:

Reset SP3 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run... and cut/paste in the following and click on OK
Code: Select all
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Repair IE7:

Please go here and download the installer for Windows Internet Explorer 7. Save it your desktop.

Double-click on IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu and follow the prompts.

Let myself know the outcome of the above please, thank you. If the need as mentioned prior we can try the upgrade to IE8 if the repair is unsuccessful.
