Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi EdS and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Security Application Check:

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe to your Desktop from one of the links below.

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Scan with Rooter:

Please download Rooter to your desktop.

  • Double click on Rooter.exe to start the application.
  • Now click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is completed a text file called Rooter.txt will appear on your desktop, post the contents in your next reply.
  • Now click on Close button to exit Rooter.

Note: The logfile can also be located within this folder Rooter$ at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\Rooter$

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • SecurityCheck Log.
  • Rooter Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hello Dakeyras, many thanks for your help!

I must apologise first because I have removed avast virus scanner and a couple of the toolbar applications - I hope this does not slow things down.

I still have the same symptoms - Internet Explorer opens a window briefly and then exits. Properties cannot be displayed when right-clicking its icon. Also the Internet Control Panel does nothing when double-clicked. The icon also has no name.

Firefox and Chrome work ok.

Regards,
Ed

Unread postby Dakeyras » August 6th, 2009, 6:00 am

Hi :)

Hello Dakeyras, many thanks for your help!
You're welcome!

I must apologise first because I have removed avast virus scanner and a couple of the toolbar applications - I hope this does not slow things down.
Fair play removing the toolbars and not a problem. However you should not have uninstalled you Anti-Virus application as now your computer is very vulnerable to malware(further infection if the case) when used online now. We will have to address this first.

Next:

Download just one only of the two free anti-virus programs listed below:

Install>> Update >> Carry Out a Complete Scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

FixPolicies:

Please download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here.

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box should briefly appear and then close.
  • Leave FixPolicies on your desktop please until I otherwise advise, thank you.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Hello Dakeyras, I haven't used the machine online since removing the anti-virus software - it only has ethernet and has not been plugged in. I'm using another machine (a mac) to download the utilities and installing with a usb drive. Do you still want me to re-install anti-virus before performing the other operations?

Regards,
Ed

Hi :)

Aye please do download/install a Anti-Virus application before carrying out my other instructions, thank you.

Out of interest do you intend to use this machine in a online capacity again?

Hello Dakeyras, avast installed, full scan performed and no viruses detected. After applying the other utilities I still have the same symptoms: IE shuts after a few seconds, icon properties does nothing and internet control panel has no name and does nothing. The only difference was the first time I ran IE I got the following error after the window closed: 'The instruction at "0x77c471b0" referenced memory at "0x21cb8d2e". The memory could not be read.' - running IE again didn't show an error after the window closed.
