Unread postby bobr » July 20th, 2009, 6:28 pm

I'm having some trouble and ran Hijackthis but what to do with the log? Can't get XP SP3 to install after all steps rec. by MS. Browser freezes etc. Help, what in this list should I remove? Hope I've done this correctly.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I have proposed a fix for a teacher to check, in the meantime do any of your current security programs detect anything on the system? What behavior do you see that makes you think you are infected?

Re: Hikackthis Log Help?

Nothing has been detected after several scans by both the anti virus and the spyware.
What sent me down this road was a problem while using internet exp. New tabs automatically would open up across the top and all of them would say blank page or about blank, the comp would not respond and I would have to force it to shut down.
After that began happening it began to take much longer for the comp. to start up 2 to 3 minutes for everything to load so I could use it.
Also during boot up it displays 'windows cannot find ERROR/ERROR make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search.'
I thought I might be able to take care of it by getting up to date with windows, but SP 3 stalls at Building Cabinets and will go no further. The abort of the install said there could be system instability and it is definitely slower/freezing/and locking up. Even mozilla is locking up.
Hope some of this helps.

Sorry for the delay Bob.

DDS (Doesn't Do Squat)
Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file. If it does, allow it.
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • When finished DDS.txt will open
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open
  • Post DDS.txt and attach Attach.txt
-------------------------------------

Do an online scan with Kaspersky's Online Scanner

  • Click on accept and updating will commence to download the latest virus definitions.
  • On the left side, under Scan click on My Computer, a scan will start.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: There is a tutorial Here if you need to see one.

No worry on delays I'm just happy for the help. Here are the DDS and the zipped Attach.

I don't see any restore points so we need to see if it is disabled.

On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
If *Turn off System Restore* is checked, uncheck it.
Click Apply, and then click OK

If it is unchecked, you can just exist.
----------------------------------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Checked (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
--------------------------------

Download RootRepeal.zip and unzip it to your Desktop.

  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Clickthe Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan

The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File, then Exit to close the program

What kind of problems are you having? Don't worry if you can't get it to run, there are other alternatives.

Also, could you updates Malwarebytes as you are running an outdated version and perform another quick scan.

updated Malwarebytes and ran again, it didn't find anything this time. Here is the MBAM log.
The root repeal starts with a window stating initializing ,please wait
then I get Windows virtual memory is low and it is expanding
I have let it run for 2.5 hrs but it still just shows the initializing window.

GMER:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
Image
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running Combofix:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. In your case this includes: Avast, Spysweeper, and Windows Defender. If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log
