Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:
Trend Micro
Avira

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. Please remove one of them NOW

**************
Please post your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log that was generated when you ran it. It can be found here:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

****************

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

*************

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)

I'm posting what you requested. I'm posting a couple of Malware Antibytes Logs (I have about 10) of when I first started using it to get rid of the virus. Please let me know if you want any of the other Malware Antibytes Logs. Thanks for your help and time! I appreciate it!

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

Hello!

How are the re-directions now?

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

You have a lot of programs starting up when you turn on your computer. These are not needed to run all the time. By following the below instruction, you will stop them from starting and it should speed up your booting time. Please note this WILL NOT uninstall these programs and they will still be available when needed. It is your choice.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

Computer seems to be running better. Thanks for the tips on booting it faster...I knew I had a ton of services running, but didn't know which ones to disable. I haven't gotten any browser redirects even typing in buzz words such as AVG, Antivirus, and clicking links like that. Once I ran Combofix I noticed a difference in the browser. It seemed to "reset" it so to speak. I've obviously encountered a virus that is being pesky and sneaky to remove off my system!

Thanks again for your help.

Excellent :thumbright:

If you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM is a great tool for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and it associated folder C:\RSIT

Clean up
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Image
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Wow...thank you again for your help! Much better now!

My last questions going forward so this doesn't happen again:
Is Avira a good anti virus option? My Trend Micro is about to expire and don't want to fork out the money for it right now?
Should I keep installed the following programs: ComboFix, Hijack This, Super Anti Spyware, and CCleaner?
The file found to be a virus on the ESET scan that was quarantined, is that anything to worry about?

I appreciate the tips going forward...I'm going to keep Malware AntiBytes installed and use.

Thanks!

Yes it is good, I use it and have had no problems.

Should I keep installed the following programs: ComboFix, Hijack This, Super Anti Spyware, and CCleaner? The file found to be a virus on the ESET scan that was quarantined, is that anything to worry about?

In my last post I asked you to type combofix /u in the run box. If you followed those instructions that would have removed Combofix and cleaned its quarantine folders, which would have included the file ESET found. I t would also have set a new system restore point, so make sure you do it, if you have not already. The others you mention are your choice, but stay away from the registry cleaner in ccleaner. Read below.

Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.
