My wife ( to whom I stupidly gave admin rights to) accidentally installed the "windows security suite" malware on computer (running windows XP Home edition). I had Symantec Endpoint running, but it didn't catch the problem. I had Norton techs do a remote clean of the machine, but Its still not working right. The annoying "popups" stopped, but now I cannot install any Anti-Virus software (tried both Norton & McAfee) - both failed on install. I loaded Ad-Aware, but it will not run. I cannot bring up the terminal commad window (typing cmd in the Start>Run).
I did find an added entry in my host file - tried to edit it, but it would not let me - gave me a "permission denied" error, even after I took off the Read only toggle. I had to finally re-name and delete the host file using unlocker.
Attached is my HijackThis log file - I don't see anything out of the ordinary, but hopefully you guys can spot something. Hopefully I can fix this without having to reload the computer.
Regards,
thebaghwan
