My comp is running slower and freezing like it used to...

Unread postby Brandon18 » January 10th, 2006, 12:32 am

I use FireFox for Internet, and here are all the programs I use for finding and getting rid of all the bad stuff on my computer: CCleaner, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search And Destroy, A-Squared, and AVG Free.

My computer used to freeze a lot, about every hour or so, so I came to you guys and everything got fixed and I haven't had any problems since. However, I've recently started having some minor problems with my computer starting to freeze again, and I've noticed that it's also running slower than usual.

Also, during a scan with the A-Squared program, it found a Trojan file on my comp, BAT was part of the name of the file. It was able to delete that file, but my computer is still slower, and I've defragged my hard drive.

I do use a free version of LimeWire to download music and such, but I make sure it's the latest version as that is the one that is safest (version 4.9.30), but I have everything set up so that I'm not sharing any files and I always exit the program completely when I'm done with it.

Here's my HiJack This log:

Hello Brandon,

I'm afraid I have very bad news for you. :(

You have a dangerous rootkit installed on your PC as evidenced by this line in your HijackThis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe

For more info see:

http://www.facetime.com/pr/pr051028.aspx

This is a very serious problem.

My best recommendation is to Disconnect from internet, format and re-install your Operating system and Applications. We can likely clean the infected files off computer but we cannot be sure that the files involved didn't do anything to your system to reduce overall system security.
You could be vulnerable to another attack as soon as you connect to net again.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

and what ever else seems appropriate.

Please let us know what your plans are.

Wow

I don't know what to do, starting over isn't an option as I don't have the operating system CD, it didn't come with my computer. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to at least buy me some time until I can figure out what to do? Like how to get the original lockx.exe files off my computer I'd imagine would be a good start, but I can't find it to do so.

Ok, well I was able to find and delete the lockx.exe file itself through HiJack This (unless that doesn't actually delete it off my comp), but is there any way to find out if the worm has infected any of my files or created any holes in my security? What else can I do other than start completely over, or is that my only option?

That is the problem.

We can clean the rootkit and any RAT etc - but we cannot tell what the person in change of any RAT (Random access trojan) has done to your system, they would in effect have been sitting in frount of your machine as though at the keyboard.

The experts accross the ASAP forum networks have discussed this question. They put the question to themselves - what would we do if it was our system, 100% said we would clean - to learn more how the infection was removed, BUT, after it was clean we would all reformat the machine, 100%, none of us felt able to trust our own removal to be 100% sure of removing and replacing all the comprimised parts of the system. That would be with hands on availablilty to the system, to do so remotely with a victim would be twice as hard.

Would you like us to help clean your system, we do have one or two helpers who would be glad of the practice with this sort of foe.

That would buy you time. But I would not trust it for shopping or banking till it was reformated.

If so post back with a new HJT log, and a RootkitRevealer log from Sysinternals

http://www.sysinternals.com/Forum/uploa ... r_1.56.zip

Download to your desktop - then extract the files to a new folder - on the desktop will do.

Run RootkitRevealer.exe and it will open a window, click the SCAN button.

When it is finished (it will take a long time, copy and paste the log file here as a reply please, along with that fresh HJT log.

I think I'm just going to try to re-load Windows. I have the product key sticker for the XP disc that was loaded onto my computer, but I don't have an XP disc right now. However, my friend is going to get me a disc so I can use that disc and my serial key. I have a question though, what do you suggest I do about all my personal files that are on my computer right now? Do I just have to save all that stuff onto CD's and then re-load them once I get Windows re-loaded?

Here's my new HiJack This log, and RootkitRevealer is doing a scan now:

If it's possible to do so, I'd prefer to not have to start over as that would literally take me a week or more to do, because I would have to save all my music, movies, pictures, documents, ect on CD's, and re-download all my programs, and I would just prefer to not have to do that.

However, if it's worth all that time and effort, then I'll just re-install Windows (although I don't know how to clean off my hard drive and start over as I have never done that before). What do you suggest I do?

Thank you,
~Brandon

The bottom line is - If this was my machine I would not trust it ever again for doing shopping, banking or the like.

I would in your place reformat - it is the safest route.

Do you have a CD burner for your music etc - or a network machine you could copy everythink over too. A friends laptop etc.

============

I have told the person who wishes to clean your machine that you have posted - so you might get a post soon (24 hours) (after it has been checked).

You will need to have made up your mind by then.

Yes, I have a CD/DVD burner, but for some reason I can't burn to DVD RW's, only DVD R's, and I have few of those, but a lot of blank CD's. I've decided to reformat, but could you explain to me what that is exactly and how to do it once I get the Windows disc?

A google list of sites with recommended reinstall instructions.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=n ... windows+XP

This one by one of the universities should be OK to follow.

http://www.resnet.uni.edu/docs/reformatxp.html

Do not be tempted to do a repair or re-install, do a complete one.

Your computer manufacture may also have such instructions, I know Dell do.

Do ensure your windows firewall is active before going online for the first time, even to activate windows.

Then get all the security programs installed and update windows before starting to use the machine in ernest.

This is the speach I normally give for when a computer is clean - it does have suggestions to help keep you clean in the future which you might like to follow.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

May your God go with you..

Thank you very much, I'm getting the Windows Professional 64bit Edition disc on Tuesday or Wednesday, so until then I'll just be saving all my files, thanks for all the help and in telling me I had the rootkit on my computer, I would have never known until it was too late.
