Browser redirected to random sites or to null sites with Overclick.cn in the redirecting URL. Have run adaware, spybot, malwarebytesw, mcafee with some malware found and removed, but the problem persists. Also found that System Restore had only one available restore date (this is not usual behavior) and that was yesterday. When attempted to run System Restore, nothing happened.

Any help would be most appreciated. Here is HijackThis log:

Hi pjtroup,
Quite a bit to do here for the first post, but just take one step at a time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender

The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run A File Search
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "karna.dat" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

So we are looking for the Installed Programs list from HiJackThis, and the contents of look.txt from your desktop.

After posting the HJT log I originally posted, I ran Superantispyware and it found 3 rootkits and I think the problem has largely been resolved, although there were some "leftovers" found by re-running HJT.

pjtroup,
I notice that the only thing you did that I asked for, was an Uninstall list.
Otherwise you did pretty much what you wanted. That's certainly OK; it's your machine.
However, I value the time I spend on this, so in order for me to help, you will have to agree to a few rules:

  • While I am helping, don't install, download, remove, or scan with anything unless I ask you to.
  • Try to complete the items requested in the order they are listed.
  • Any time there is a task you cannot do, please post any question you have about it.
  • Surf as little as possible while the machine is still infected. I will tell you when it's clean.
  • Answer each post within one day, or give me notice that there will be a delay. Otherwise the thread will be closed.

If these "rules" are too restrictive, or if you don't need further help, I wish you well and won't correspond further.
If these conditions are agreeable, please proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/blacklight/index.html
or
Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
Please save it to your desktop.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

Sorry, I don't intend to waste your time.
Actually, the only thing I failed to do that you advised was failing to remove Spybot S&D, which was an oversight and I have now removed Spybot S&D.

You asked for me to post 2 log files and I posted the uninstall list from HJT and the other file called look.txt was completely blank so there was nothing to post.

As I mentioned, during the time that elapsed between when I posted the original problem and when you responded to my post, I ran SuperAntispyware and that program found and corrected some or all of the problem I was having with redirection of both IE 7 and Firefox browsers. Perhaps I should have just withdrawn the post at that point, but I was concerned about the inability to access any previous restore points and then the slowness of population of the add/remove programs (appwiz.cpl) that perhaps there were still problems ongoing that I might need help with. I now have several restore points since 6/28/09 (all were removed prior to 6/28/09 and they remain inaccessible).

As you requested, I have run fsbl.exe and am posting the results of that log below:

07/04/09 12:57:54 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 2.2.1092 initialized

Please let me know if I need to do anything else. Thanks for your help thus far.

jtroup,
That's good.
-------------------------------------------------------
Disable SUPERAntiSpyware (if it's not disabled from an earlier instruction).
Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray
Choose View Control Center (preferences/options).
On the General and Startup tab, Uncheck Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts
Click Close to exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
Click on the Tools menu, click General Settings, Scroll down to Real-Time Protection Options section and Deactivate the Real-Time Protection system.

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ad-Aware Service
This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
(If the program is not installed now the entry will not show up, or there may be an entry already disabled)
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 7.0.5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Lavasoft VX2 Cleaner
Registry Mechanic 5.1

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the Scanner and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

So we are looking for the two logs from the RSIT scanner. Let me knoow if any problems.

pjtroup,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Uniblue Registry Booster
Resplendent Registrar 3.22
Resplendent Registrar 3.30
PC-Doctor for Windows
Logitech Desktop Messenger

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you wish to re-install Spybot S&D, it's OK to do so now.
Just do NOT activate "immunization" or "Teatimer".
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

--------------------------------------------------
Run Flash Disinfector
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task > Run... Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.

You can run Flash Disinfector with other flash drives and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ToolBar S&D
Download ToolBar S&D and save to your desktop.
Disable your antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ToolBar S&D.
If you don't know how to disable your AntiVirus, please ask and I will help.
  • Double-click ToolBar S&D.exe
  • Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
  • Wait till the end of the scan.
  • Notepad will open containing the report log.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
  • A copy will also be saved in %SystemDrive%\TB.txt. Usually C:\TB.txt

pjtroup,
Bulletin -- Don't know if this would affect you, but you should have a look, immediately: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/03/mcafee_false_positive_glitch/

Now down to business:
Do you recognize Redbus Interhouse as an Internet Provider for you? If not please tell me the name of your primary provider.
-----------------------------------------------------------
This file phones home and needs to be removed.
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight the listed file only, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.

C:\Windows\iun6002.exe

If you have any problem deleting the file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note if cannot delete or find.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download the Registry Search Tool from here (scroll down-there are also other tools on the page):
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.
Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

b9db16a4-6edc-47ec-a1f4-b86292ed211d

then hit Ok
It may take a while to run.
It will tell you when it's done and offer to have you look at the file.
Say Yes, and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
DISABLE MCAFEE SECURITY CENTER
Please navigate to the system tray and double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center.
  • Click Advanced Menu (bottom mid-left).
  • Click Configure (left).
  • Click Computer & Files (top left).
  • VirusScan can be disabled in the right-hand module and set when it should resume or you can do that manually later on.
  • Do the same via Internet & Network for Firewall Plus.

Go back into the McAfee Security Center and Re-enable the VirusScan and Firewall.
So we are looking for the Registry Search result, and let me know if the file deletion was successful.

Deleted file iun6002.exe without difficulty.

Ran RegSrch and it states the string b9db16a4-6edc-47ec-a1f4-b86292ed211d is not found (then re-ran TB S&D and it still finds it).

Ran flash disinfector after deactivating McAfee and then after reactivating McAfee, when I clicked on the file to look at properties, McAfee notified it was a trojan and deleted it.

pjtroup,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Let's see if that string is really a file or folder:
Run a File Search
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "b9db16a4-6edc-47ec-a1f4-b86292ed211d" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\lookee.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called lookee.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!!

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
A copy is located here: "C:\ComboFix.txt"
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

When I try to download Combofix, McAfee blocks it with a notification of the Artemis Trojan and will not let me download the file. I suspect you will advise me to disable McAfee and then download, but I thought I'd better check with you first (lots of warnings, reports of adverse experiences, etc with Combofix as I'm sure you're aware).
