Hello and welcome to Malware Removal. My nickname is Cyborg, and I will be helping you in removing the malware infections in your computer.
Before we start disinfecting your computer, please note all the following points :
  • Please note that it is important that you following all my instructions carefully.
  • Please do not fix anything prior to notifying me as it could render your system in an unstable state.
  • Please make sure that you are the administrator of the system which I am going to disinfect.
  • If you are receiving help from elsewhere, please notify me about it.

I am currently going through your log, and will get back to you as soon as I can.

Please note that I am currently under training, and all my fixes are being checked by an expert to confirm that they are in order, so there may be slight delays in replies due to this, please bear with us.

Hello Gary,

Could you please explain what you mean by saying "I can only get on running in safe mode"? Do you mean that you cannot get into normal mode at all? Or just that booting into Safe Mode with networking is faster than booting into Normal mode? If you can get into normal mode, then please run the tools from inside it.

Please note that running your computer in Safe Mode with Networking means that your computer is more vulnerable to attack because it means that you are still connected to the internet.
Hence it is still available for attack by malware/viruses if it is already infected.

Please use another computer which you know is clean and not infected to download the below mentioned. Please burn (write the files) onto a CD-R and then use it in your laptop.
Please do NOT use a USB flashdrive/thumb drive to transfer the files, doing so may spread the infection to your other computer, if you use the flashdrive again.

Please move HijackThis to a seperate directory

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

  • Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.
  • Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop (please use another computer for this).
Burn this file to a CD-R and insert it Now from your laptop, please perform the following :
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
  • log.txt will be opened maximized
  • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt

I meant that I can only get on the internet in safe mode with networking. Windows starts fine normally. The problem is that even though it shows that it is connected to my router network with excellent signal strength it will not connect to the internet in either IE or firefox. Plus it's running/starting up very slow. Here are the logs. info.txt logfile of random's system information tool 1.06 2009-07-07 16:13:23

Re: Computer won't connect and booting slow

Unread postby Cyborg » July 8th, 2009, 2:29 pm

Hello Gary,

I'm afraid I have some unpleasant news for you.
Your recent logs show signs of Infostealer.Gampass. Infostealer.Gamepass is a generic detection for a Trojan horse that steals online game accounts, such as Lineage, Ragnarok online, Rohan, and Rexue Jianghu

It's possible that this infection has a keylogger and has logged all your keystrokes. It is prudent that you change your online game account passwords so that it does not get compromised.
Please change your passwords using a computer which you know is clean and does not have any infection.

Please continue with the fixes in Normal Mode.

Please re-open HijackThis and place a check on the following :

I did all the netassess and the black box appeared and disappeared but a nettest.txt file was never created on the desktop and a search of all files and folders had no results. Passwords were changed from another computer. So here is the GMER log and MBAM log. Do you also want a HJT log? If so here it is. Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Re: Computer won't connect and booting slow

Unread postby Cyborg » July 10th, 2009, 12:30 am

Hi Gary,

I see no active infections (we need to perform an online scan later for confirmation).
Meanwhile, could you please try this :

Please boot into Normal Mode and perform the following :

  • Right click on the ZA icon near your clock (which is in the system tray)
  • Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
  • Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
  • When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
  • Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

Did resetting ZoneAlarm make any difference? Can you access the internet in Normal Mode now?

Zone Alarm doesn't have the reset option when I rightclick on it, just "Restore Zone Alarm" I did that but it didn't do anything. But I wondered why my windows Firewall was alway off even when I turned it on and it turns out that in Zone Alarms advanced options it has disable windows firewall checked. I unchecked it and now I'm able to get on the internet normally again. So I'll be probably be able to get stuff now that can be used to tune it up a little to see if the slow startup, ect. can be fixed. Iobit smart defrag and Advanced system care seem to be some programs that have always been good on my main computer. This infected one is one my son used. It has AVG, spybot S&D, Ad-aware SE, CCleaner, and Zone Alarm on it, but he probably had them off most of the time.

Hi Gary,

I'm glad that you're able to access internet from Normal Mode now. Please do this, I would like to check for remaining infections (if any, so that we don't overlook them).

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
Click Scan Now and Accept the agreement. You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the contents of the log here.

Please re-use these instructions to run RSIT :
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished a log file will open up:
  • log.txt will be opened maximized
  • Please post the contents of log.txt

You may want to read this thread to try and fix your computer's general slowness.

SUMMARY

Please post back with
  • The log from the Kaspersky WebScanner.
  • log.txt from RSIT.

Hi Gary,

The infected item from the KAS scan is from AOL. Do you use any products from AOL?

Also, do you have any Norton/Symantec products installed?

I have two shortcuts for AOL (AOL and AOL for broadband) that came with the computer but were never used (to my knowledge as this was first my wifes computer than my sons). And I have a symantecs folder in program files that has a live update folder in it.

Please uninstall LiveUpdate
  • Please go to Control Panel and open, "Add/Remove Programs".
  • Locate LiveUpdate and click on the button, "Change/Remove".
  • Reboot your computer and do the rest of the fix that follows.

Now, please open a new Notepad file by clicking on Start and then selecting Run. Type notepad and press enter; copy paste the following.
Click Edit and deselect, Word Wrap if it is checked.

Now, please copy the following code into your clipboard by clicking Select All here and pressing Ctrl+C.
Go to the notepad file and press Ctrl+V.

Code: Select all
@echo off

rmdir /s /q C:\Program Files\Online Services\AOL90US\
del /f /q C:\WINDOWS\tasks\Symantec NetDetect.job

and click on File and then on, Save As....
Under Save as type : select, "All Files(*.*)".
Clear everything under File name and type, "Remove.bat" and click on Save.

Close all open windows and then go to the location where you saved the file and double click on it.
A file will open and close momentarily, this is perfectly normal.

Please run RSIT again and post the contents on log.txt again.

Live update is not listed in the add/remove programs. Should I manually delete the symantec folder?
