A few months ago I installed F-Security Internet 2008 and ever since then it seems my computer is retarded. Sometimes it works smoothly when first starting it and other times it won't open windows right off the bat. It shuts windows down sometimes when there's more than one application running and a few times the whole computer shut down after getting "stuck". I've also been having problems with skype, but I'm not sure if its related to the rest of the computer...skype will just shut off in the middle of talking to other people, but it still shows as though I'm connected to the other person. Also, and again I'm not sure if this is related, I have a virus (I think) on my hotmail email account which keeps sending emails out about perfume or something to my entire hotmail contact list. It sends emails out usually once every two weeks. Okay, thats pretty much all I can think of. I hope you can help me :)

Here's my log from highjack this:

Hi sarahtjimenez,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll
O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ECenter] C:\Dell\E-Center\EULALauncher.exe
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download the CCleaner Installer from here . Choose the Slim version. You can save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
You can now delete the installer ccsetupxxx_slim.exe from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
  • Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
  • In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
Please post the contents of install.txt in your next post.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Be sure that every item is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents. The logs are listed and named by time/date stamp.

So we are looking for the Installed Programs list from CCleaner, and the log from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

sarahtjimenez,
I do have some good ideas on what could cause this. First, some things to do.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(XP)
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Logitech Desktop Messenger

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
It is the 5th item on the page, called JRE 6 Update 14
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
-----------------------------------------------------------
TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs. Let it run uninterrupted.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • TFC will most likely require a Reboot. If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
The scan shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds.

sarahtjimenez,
Yes there is. You need to end up with NO remnants of Acrobat 5 starting up automatically.
Acrobat 5 has a broken updater which can hang up or slow down a machine while it tries in vain to find updates.
In addition, you need to use only the Adobe Reader 9 for looking at pdf files on the net.
All Acrobat and Reader versions lower than version 9.1 are vulnerable to exploits from the net which can infect your machine.
You can call Adobe Acrobat 5 from Start > All Programs if you wish to edit or compose a pdf file with it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe
Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine

Let me know if the performance is better, or whether we need to look elsewhere.

Well I completed your directions from the last post and it seems like it's fixed the slowness issue. However, (and I may have forgotten to mention this prior) when I try to view videos on the internet/facebook it prompts me to upload the newest version of Adobe Flash. I go to the site, upload the newest version, but it continues to tell me that I need to upload the lastest version of Adobe Flash, and I can never seem to watch the videos. Do you know how to fix this problem??

Many thanks again in advance :)

sarah,
The real Adobe Flash Player is here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
You can download and install it. Then ignore all pleas from any social site to "update".

Facebook , Youtube and other social sites are loaded with scams to update your flash player. One click and you have an infected computer. Never do it. These fake sites are even dressed up to look like a real Adobe website. After you know you have the latest real flash player, any video you "can't watch" is one you are better off without.

Glad we have taken care of your main problem.
Just update run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware every week or so. You can also open your F-Secure control center and run a full scan once in a while.

Okay. Well I just went to the site you posted and it looks exactly the same as the site I've downloaded Flash from a handful of times. We'll see what happens.
Thanks for your help :)
