Unread postby TheNickus » June 20th, 2009, 5:25 am

Hey Everyone,
Every 10 or so minutes my AVG 8.5 Web shield is Catching what it identifies as a Packed Rolex coming from binuser.fileave.com/Lux/is181845.exe, listed process name C:\WINDOW\system32\svchost.exe

AVG Scan comes up Clean
VundoFix comes up Clean
Malware Bytes comes up clean (ok it catches my windows firewall/autoupdate is off)
Sophis Anti-Rootkit comes up clean

What the heck have I caught? Is my best bet just to block this site in my hosts file?

--- Thanks in advance

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi TheNickus and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

As always, thanks for your time,

Hi :)

Is this computer a business machine and or part of a LAN/WAN(local/wide area network)? Reason I am asking is the below Anti-Virus application is not used by home users:
======Security center information======

AV: AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition
Plus the actual name of the computer is not one normally associated with a home computer either:

Former office PC now home office PC. I ended up with a couple of PC's (and no severance check, or pay out for my accrued vacation) when my former company went out of business. I suppose it all evens out in some way ;) .

Hi :)

OK fair play the situation concerning the actual computer and my commiserations about your former employment.

With regard to the Anti-Virus currently in use this is not ideal at all for home use. So I propose we change this to a suitable freeware home use only application, is this acceptable to your good self?

Hmmm , I have to say I'm reticent to downgrade my antivirus software. My license for AVG Network addition is current and legitimate, and the remote management functionality that could (although I'm doubtful it would) provide a vulnerability isn't installed. What do you think a freeware virus scanner like AVG Free or Avast catch that my current installation of AVG and Malwarebytes haven't?

I'm not trying to question your expertise in any way, I'd just like to know how this course of action will get this piece of malware removed faster than waiting for an updated definitions file that recognizes it.

Good day :)

Now actually your reticence to remove a Anti-Virus application used(suited for)in a networked environment leads myself to believe that the computer in question is actually used for business related purposes. if I may draw your attention to the below forum policy:
In General, we do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.
If you ask for help and, unknown to us, it involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advice are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
Source.

I will further add myself:

I do not provide assistance in cleaning business or corporate computers. There could be legal issues if sensitive information is disclosed via the logs or if the infection or cleanup process damages company files. It is difficult to distinguish between well intentioned "fixing" by the end user and hacking the system. The damage that can be done to a business infrastructure is immense. If it is a networked computer, it is likely that more than one machine is infected. Thus, the company IT Department needs to be involved in the cleanup process.

Most of the tools used in the cleanup process are not "enterprise" versions and have only been tested on home computers. The tools could make policy or other setting changes that could conflict with the company policy. In addition, the software and other tools used in the cleanup process are free for personal use where the computer owner is accepting the risk. Not only are employees not in a position to accept such liability for company property, but we cannot knowingly abuse the terms of use of the software developers and vendors who provide the tools.

Please notify your IT Department or company approved vendor.

As this issue involves either a company owned machine or a machine that is used for business purposes,
it falls outside the scope of this forum. Therefore, this topic is now closed.
