Re: Cannot Rename folder and other issues

Unread postby Dakeyras » June 18th, 2009, 6:19 am

Hi :)

My pc is running OK, not the best but OK. No errors coming up now
Your machine is no doubt need of system maintenance, I can advice about this in my all clean post OK.

Still can't rename a folder.
OK I recall from your first post you mentioned about this and tried resetting the folder options. So from some research it appears this is a common problem with Vista though never encountered it on either of my Vista machines. Though in your case malware is most likely the original cause. Please carry out the following, thank you.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Right-click on erunt-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator to install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Next:

Make sure you have backed up the registry before proceeding. Now visit this page and scroll down to:

STEP TWO:
Restore Registry Settings

Under For the 32 bit version of Vista - click on the Download button.

  • Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the Desktop.
  • Right click on the .reg file (on Desktop) and click on Merge.
  • Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.
  • Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and then OK when prompted.
  • Restart the computer to apply the restoration.
  • When done, you can delete the .reg file (on Desktop).

Note: I checked the registry file against a export from one of my own machines and it is safe to use. Only reason I have not included it below with the OTM instructions is it is quite large and the chance of a mistake being made cut N pasting such a large script is not worth the risk.

Next:

Please download OTM to your Desktop.

  • Right-click OTM and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Code: Select all
:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-
"ISUSPM Startup"=-
"SunJavaUpdateSched"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"Shockwave Updater"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49}]

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTM, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTM.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running. Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • OTM Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log. <-- Remember to right-click on HijackThis.exe and select Run as Administrator

Re: Cannot Rename folder and other issues

Unread postby Ditta » June 19th, 2009, 1:53 am

Hi,

My system is still running the same. I do have a another issue that I forgot to mention before. Everytime I have a pdf file open, the Adobe updater keeps coming up and it says it stopped working so it closes. And it keeps coming back up as long as I have a pdf fiel open. This started when I resinstalled Acrobat reader. Actually I believe I had the same issue before I uninstalled it too. No other issues.

Ok So here is the OTM Log:

Hi :)

Re the Adobe problem only suggestion I have is to uninstall then re-download and when re-installing make sure to right click on the installer and run in admin mode.

One point I will raise, you mentioned in your first post you ran CCleaner. The application is fine to us but never use the Registry - Scan for Issues component. As the aforementioned has a undesired habit of actually removing legitimate registry entries and any backups created during the process have limited success of being effectively re-merged again.

Oh I forgot to mention. I still can't rename a folder.
OK one more avenue we can pursue and if no joy since you machine appears to be malware free is for myself to advice seeking assistance regarding this issue with specific IT Tech Software Support as primarily I only provide Anti-Malware support.

Thanks again.
You're welcome!

Anyway please carry out the following first and let myself know the outcome, thank you.

Vista-System File Checker:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb).
  • Click on All Programs and Accessories.
  • Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\Windows\System32> type in the following exactly:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key.

Note: This may take awhile to finish. When completed close the Administrator Command Prompt window.

I understand. Guess its a good thing that I did not have malaware. I ran the command you sent. No major issues. System is running OK.

Here is the result:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Windows\system32>

Good evening :)

It appears SFC did repair some corrupt files. Is the rename folder issue resolved?

Hi :)

I am assuming the SFC scan rectified the folder issue. Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Clean up with OTM:

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTM as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Reset System Restore:

  • Click on Start(Vista orb) >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Cleanup.
  • Select C drive and click OK.
  • Put a "Tick" in all the available boxes
  • Select the More Options tab.
  • Under System Restore, click on Clean up....
  • You will be prompted. Click Yes.
  • When done, click OK.
  • You will be prompted again. Press Yes to confirm.
  • When done, Disk Cleanup will close automatically.

Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, Grisoft AVG 8.5 automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb) >> All Programs >> Windows Update.
  • In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
  • After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
  • Click to select the check box for any found, then click Install.
  • When completed Reboot(restart) your computer if not prompted to do so.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the author is well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions? feel free to ask, if not stay safe!

Hi :)

Hi. Sorry for not responding sooner but NO it's not fixed.
OK by all means try it but make sure you create a registry backup first as follows:

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Please navigate to Start(Vista Orb) >> All Programs >> Right-click on ERUNT select Run as Administrator

  • Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  • In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
  • System registry
  • Current user registry
  • Next click on OK
  • When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes
  • After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
  • Now click on OK. A backup has been created.

Note: If you have uninstalled ERUNT since we last used it, please inform myself before proceeding any further.

Please let myself know the outcome, thank you.

As any remaining issues do not involve malware and therefore fall outside the scope of this forum, this topic is now closed.

If these non-malware issues remain and you feel you require further help, we suggest that you seek help at a general troubleshooting forum.
