Need help Comodo reported "system .... ksnapshot.etl"

Unread postby MRHaku » June 13th, 2009, 3:53 pm

Hi,

Since yesterday, Comodo keep reporting CSRSS.EXE want to do this and that. I asked it to be blocked. Now it asking about "SYSTEM" wanted to add an entry to the registry for "ksnapshot.etl". I ran S&D and MalwareBytes in safemode but both did not find anything. I do use this system for banking, so now I'm scare to do so before this problem is resolved.

From reading other thread on this forum. I try to launch Kaspersky online scan but both IE and FireFox would not respond and crash.

I'm running Vista with SP1.
============== Jun 17 ==============
Comodo report that system was trying run

sprtcmd.exe running wscript.exe

I try to run combofix but it is giving me an error saying "Window can not find 32788r22fwjfw\n.com ...." and "window can not find 32788r22fwjfw\hidec.exe ...." I'm running combofix as an Administrator

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer, similar issues or not.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
I am specifically referring to tools such as ComboFix! You don't know what they do, or what they can do - please don't use them on your own!

  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then, unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Please post a new HijackThis log, taken in Normal Mode. Also:

Make an Uninstall List

I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place and post it in your next reply.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

1 - HJT complain about system denied access to host file ....
Did you right click HJT and choose Run as Administrator?
2 - Can't save new log file until I deleted the old one back in 2008.
That's OK, older logs are of no use.

Important: does COMODO include both antivirus and firewall? (By default it does - just making sure you're actually using both the antivirus and the firewall components)

You should uninstall URL Assistant through Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

Right click hijackthis and choose run as administrator. Click do a system scan only. Put a check next to these, click fix checked, answer yes:

O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll

Use Windows Explorer to delete this folder: C:\Program Files\BAE

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

Have you recently updated your version of Java? I can't see any version number, so I thought I'd ask.

Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.

Thanks OD!

I'm at work currently so I will post the result later on tonite.
As for your questions:

Did you right click HJT and choose Run as Administrator?
I believe so, but I will do it again tonite.
Important: does COMODO include both antivirus and firewall?
Yes
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

No problem! Thank you very much for your kindness.
It is still coming up with ""system .... ksnapshot.etl" now and then, one or twice a day. Sorry, for the bad news!

I have ran ccleaner/mbam/s&d and comodo to stop the msg when ever it popup. I try to run combofix but was not successful on running it.

Here is the MBAM log:

OK then, we'll need to take a closer look.

I have ran ccleaner/mbam/s&d and comodo to stop the msg when ever it popup. I try to run combofix but was not successful on running it.
Please don't run tools on your own, especially with combofix this can be very dangerous.
On a side note - why exactly were you unsuccessful in running combofix?

Let's find out where and what this ksnapshot.etl is.

Press the Windows Button and the R on your keyboard to open up the Run dialogue. Copy and paste this:
Code: Select all
cmd /c dir\*ksnapshot*.*etl*/l/a/b/s>"%UserProfile%\Desktop\Look.txt"

Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to run the command as administrator. After the black box which opens has closed, open the file Look.txt.
Please post its contents in your next reply. If the file contains ONE line detailing the path to this ksnapshot.etl, please also follow the instructions below:
Submit a file for analysis
We need to have something checked for malware. Please go to Jotti's.
  • Click Browse next to File to upload & scan and copy and paste the contents of the file Look.txt into the browse box. Then click OK.
  • Click Submit. The file will now be scanned for malware and the results will be displayed from the screen. Select the part where the virus scan results are shown (the part starting with A-squared and ending with VBA32) and copy and paste this to notepad.
  • Copy and paste the whole notepad file you just made into your reply.

Hi MRHaku :)

That's a bit strange.
Try right-clicking your browser and choosing Run as Administrator, then try again.

If it still won't work, let's try to grab one file and copy it to the desktop.
The below is not needed if running the browser as administrator worked.
Press Windows Key + R and copy and paste this:
Code: Select all
cmd /c for /f %i in (`dir\*ksnapshot*.*etl*^/l^/a^/s^/b`) do copy /v/y %i "%Userprofile%\Desktop\UploadMe">>"%Userprofile%\Desktop\Log.txt" 2>>&1
Press ctrl+shift+enter, allow the UAC prompt, and please try to upload the file UploadMe on your desktop to Jotti again. Also post Log.txt which will have appeared on your desktop.
