Windows Installer PopsUp "QuickProjects"? Is this Malware?

Unread postby Salmon Dave » June 8th, 2009, 5:21 pm

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your time and attention to this...

If I am installing or updating software or even simply opening a browser window or my email client, I've suddenly been getting a Windows Installer pop-up with the header "QuickProjects" - here's a screenshot:
QuickProjects_error1.jpg

Strange behavior for a PC running WinXPSP3 in Finnish!

Next comes a second screen:
QuickProjects_error2.jpg

Again, my OS is in Finnish - all these dialogues normally appear in the OS language, not in English...
When I hit 'Cancel' I get a third pop-up:
QuickProjects_error3.jpg

Another oddity: when I hit 'OK' in the final box and it begins shutting down, the green task bar EMPTIES right-to-left, a behavior I've never seen before - ?
This happens two or three times in a row (lately, more and more often - especially when opening programs) and is becoming a major annoyance!
BTW: I did a LOT of searching and found precious little about this elsewhere on the 'net - one forum linked it to HP printers (I have an HP computer, but no HP printer) and another linked it to Canon software (I have their Zoom Browser and associated camera software installed, as we use a Canon PowerShot camera...), but NOWHERE did I find any solutions to this annoyance.
Help!

Anyhow, here's my HJT Log:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.
If theres is more than one file to scan, insert them 1 at a time.

C:\Program Files\LSI SoftModem\agrsmsvc.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

You may recieve a message stating "
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Just let me know if that is what you saw.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Let's look into your original problem.

Do you use this Quickprojects program ? Doesn't sound as if you do.
As long as you do not use it let's try these things.

Go to
Start/control panel/add remove programs ;
And Uninstall

QuickProjects

If that doesn't work try this next.

______________________________
Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click msicuu2.exe to install the utility.

Next, Click 'Start', click 'All Programs' (or 'Programs' on some operating systems), and then click the shortcut for the
Windows Installer Clean Up Utility to open the utility

Once the program is open select:

QuickProjects

Now click Remove, then click OK

Reboot your computer.
Let me know if the symptoms you describe persist.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from Jottis/ Virus total
  • Did the issue with Quickprofects subside?
  • Are you just running the firewall from comodo internet security ?

Hi Bob4,

1.) Here's the Jotti result:
Jotti_result.jpg
[/img]

2.) I don't use QuickProjects and I don't know what it is; it was not listed on the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

3.) Windows Installer Cleanup Utility was downloaded and listed QuickProjects; I removed it.

4.) Here's the latest HijackThis log:

5.) Haven't been home today to use the PC but my son tells me he hasn't seen any QuickProjects pop-ups so far...

6.) Yes, I'm using Comodo's firewall/HIPS only; BitDefender handles AV.
I've been advised you should never run 2 AV programs on the same machine.

Thanks for your time, patience and expertise!

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Close that.

Everything else looks and sounds good so far.
Yes you should never run 2 AV together. Was just checking to be sure.

When you do get home try doing what ever it was you do to see that POP-up. I'm almost sure it's gone now.
That program more than likely came with the machine. Parts of it got corrupted and started giving the error.
The tool we used cleans these problems up.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
