Hello Kat,

Great ... Hope you enjoyed your holiday :) Thanks for getting back to me. Let's continue cleaning your machine.
Please print these instructions, you will have to reboot your machine during these steps.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
We are going to be making changes to your registry, so it's always a good idea to create a backup before making changes.
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK".
  5. At the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  6. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.

If you did not successfully complete the above ERUNT step... STOP ... do not continue. Post back an let me know what happened!

Step 2.
Update HJT and Fix HijackThis entries
Your version of HijackThis is out of date & needs to be updated. Having an outdated version may not give a reliable log.
Download HijackThis © Trend Micro Incorporated. All rights reserved.
Save it to your desktop. Alternate link site here.
NOTE:When you have successfully downloaded the new version of HijackThis (HJT) ...
Please uninstall any other versions of HijackThis you have. You should have already done this in an earlier step.
  1. Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop, to begin the install.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  2. Click on Install
It will create a HiJackThis icon on the desktop
  3. Once installed, it will launch HiJackThis
    • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  4. When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present):
*Only check those items listed below *
      R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SearchSettings] C:\Program Files\Search Settings\SearchSettings.exe
      O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZJ
  5. After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis
  6. Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  7. Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.
Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.

  6. Copy all the text from the Results window...
  7. Click Exit (3) when done.
  8. Please paste the entire content from the OTM (Results) window or the log file, in your next reply.
NOTE: If your computer did not automatically reboot... please reboot it (normally) now!

Step 4.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.

Hello Kat,

Thanks for hanging there...
Please give me more information about OTM "not running"... what happens when you attempt to run it again? Any windows or error messages?
Also, please let me know more about the Internet Explorer connection issue. What are you trying to do when problems occur? Any specific web sites?
Are there any popup windows with error messages?

From the OTM instructions...
The end results of the processing will be in 2 places:
The Results window on the right side of the OTM screen.
A log (text) file created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
Please locate the OTM log as mentioned above and post the contents of the file.

I'd like you to run an online scan, to double check there is nothing hanging around.

Step 1.
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
Note: You - will - need to use Internet Explorer for this scan!
Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
SYMANTEC Antivirus- disable
  • Right Click on the Symantec AntiVirus Client icon... in system tray area.
  • Left Click on the words Enable Auto-Protect.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  1. Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  2. Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
  3. Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  4. Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
    • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
    • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  5. Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
  6. Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
  7. Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  8. Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.

Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection... before continuing!

Step 2.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. OTM log file contents.
  2. ESET scan results
Thanks,
Wingman

Due to the problem with the internet I can't complete the other program. I have tried twice but the internet keeps aborting me. It happens at no particular time and on no particular program. The following message shows... Runtime error Program c:\programfiles\internetexplorer\explore.exe abnormal program termination.

Any suggestions how to stop this happening?

Thanks Kat

Hello Kat,

Thanks for hanging there...
Thanks for the info on the IE problem.
Did you really mean c:\programfiles\internetexplorer\explore.exe or was it supposed to be iexplore.exe?

Please try these steps... these must be done in the given sequence... so if there are any problems, stop... and post back.
Read the instructions carefully first... then perform the steps. If you are unsure about anything, post back and ask before proceeding.

Step 1.
Please download ATF Cleaner ... by Atribune. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download site: here.
DO NOT run this program yet!!

Step 2.
Boot to Safe Mode
Make sure you have downloaded anything you need... print these instructions as well, you will not have Internet access!
If you can not boot into Safe Mode ...STOP... Do not continue with any fix steps, post back and let me know!
  1. Restart your computer. During start up... repeatedly tap the F8 key... When the menu appears...
  2. Use up-arrow key to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.
If you have a multiple boot system (more than 1 OS installed) or you have Recovery Console installed...
you will be shown a multi boot screen. Highlight the OS you want to start... Press Enter.
  3. Once the system starts ...it displays various files/drivers being loaded, it may pause, that's normal.
  4. When your desktop is loaded... reply "Yes" to the Safe Mode startup, if prompted.

Step 3.
ATF Cleaner
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources.
It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, detecting the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).
  1. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  2. Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  3. Click the Empty Selected button.
      If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
      If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  4. Reply OK to the total bytes removed...box, then click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 4.
Reboot your machine normally now...

Step 5.

Await your reply.... thanks!

Hello Kat,
Thanks for hanging there...

Please try these steps... these must be done in the given sequence... so if there are any problems, stop... and post back.
Read the instructions carefully first... then perform the steps. If you are unsure about anything, post back and ask before proceeding.

Step 1.
IE 7 Runtime error...
Please try the following (3) steps to resolve the runtime error issue you are having.
First step...
Temporarily disable your NORTON 360 Anti-Virus program and Firewall.
  • Start Norton 360.
    For Antivirus Protection Settings
  • In the Norton 360 main window... click Tasks & Settings... then click Change Advanced Settings.
  • In the Advanced Settings window, click Virus & Spyware Protection Settings.
In the Automatic Protection Settings tab, uncheck Turn on Auto-Protect... then click Apply.
  • Under "How long would you like to disable Auto-Protect for?" select... "Until I turn it back on"... then click OK.
    Click Firewall Protection Settings.
  • Under Firewall... click Off... then click Apply.
  • Under "How long should the firewall remain turned off?" select... "Until I turn it back on"... then click OK...thenClose.
Second step...
Run IE with No Add-ons.
  1. Open Internet Explorer 7.
  2. Choose Tools from the menu.
  3. In the drop-down menu, choose Manage Add-ons ... then choose Enable or Disable Add-ons....
  4. In the Manage Add-ons window, choose "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" from the Show: drop-down box.
The resulting list will show every add-on that Internet Explorer 7 has ever used. If an add-on is causing the problem you're troubleshooting, it will be one of the add-ons listed here.
  5. Select the first add-on listed... then select the "Disabled" radio button in the Settings area at the bottom of the window... then click OK.
  6. Click OK if prompted with ... "For changes to take effect, you might need to restart Internet Explorer" message.
  7. Close... and then reopen Internet Explorer 7.
  8. Perform whatever activities in Internet Explorer that were causing the problem you're troubleshooting.
  9. If the problem is not resolved, repeat Steps 1 through 7, disabling the next add-on in the list... one at a time. until your problem is resolved.
If you've disabled all Internet Explorer 7 add-ons and your problem continues, you may need to Delete Internet Explorer 7 ActiveX Controls as an additional troubleshooting step.
Third step...
Reset IE 7.
  1. Click Start button-> Control Panel... Change to Classic View on the left pane... then double-click the Internet Options icon.
  2. On the Security tab, click Default level button for each icon in the Select a zone to view or change security settings.
  3. Click to Programs tab, and then click the Make default button if it is not grayed out.
  4. Click to Advanced tab, click Restore advanced settings button in the Settings area.
  5. Click the Reset button in the Reset Internet Explorer settings area and Click OK.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Change the IE setting.
  1. Open Internet Explorer 7.
  2. Click on Tools and select Options.
  3. Click on the Advanced tab.
  4. Scroll down to the Browser area, put a check in the box next to Disable script debugging
  5. Remove the check in the box next to Display a notification about every script error if this box is currently checked.
  6. Click OK to confirm your changes.

Remember to enable your Norton 360... Antivirus and Firewall!

Step 2.
Post a New HJT Log
  1. Start HijackThis.
  2. If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the "Main Menu"...button.
  3. From the Main Menu... Press the "Do System Scan and Save a Log File"...button.
When completed...Notepad will open with the new "hijackthis.log" file contents.
  4. Copy/paste the entire "hijackthis.log" file contents in your next reply.
Keep HijackThis Open...
Post a New Uninstall List
  1. While still in HijackThis.
If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the "Main Menu"...button.
  2. From the Main Menu...Press the "Open the Misc Tools"...button.
  3. Press the "Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  4. Press only the Save List...button.
  5. Press the "Save" button.
The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be saved in your HJT folder.
  6. Copy and Paste the contents of "uninstall_list.txt' in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problems following and performing these instructions
  2. New HJT log
  3. New HJT Uninstall log
  4. Let me know how your computer is behaving.
Thanks,

Re: So very very slow

Unread postby Wingman » July 1st, 2009, 9:03 am

Hello Kat,
Thanks for hanging there... Glad your IE "experience" is better. ;)

Please perform these steps... these must be done in the given sequence... so if there are any problems, stop... and post back.
Read the instructions carefully first... then perform the steps. If you are unsure about anything, post back and ask before proceeding.

Step 1.
Java Update Needed!
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components and update:

Attention: Print these instructions or copy them. You will be closing your browser!!

DOWNLOAD UPDATED VERSION
  1. Get the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)... © Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  2. Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
  4. Select your Platform: "Windows".
  5. Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  6. Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  7. Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  8. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
<STOP> Do not install the new version of Java yet. We need to do some cleanup first!

REMOVE OLD JAVA VERSIONS
  1. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  2. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel... Double-click on Add/Remove Programs ...remove all older versions of Java.
  3. Check (highlight) Java(TM) 6 Update 4
  4. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button...follow any onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  5. When all Java components are removed... Exit Add/remove Programs and Control Panel.
    Delete old Java Folder
    • Right click on the Start...button.
    • Select Explore...from the menu.
    • Navigate to and find the following folder: if found, delete it.
It's possible it may have been removed by the uninstall steps
      C:\Program Files\Java\ <==== delete this entire folder
    • When finished, close and exit Explorer.

    INSTALL UPDATED VERSION
    1. Close all open applications (standard), especially your browser.
    2. From desktop... double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
    3. Follow the on-screen directions...when installation is completed successfully, reboot your computer normally.
    4. Once the computer has been restarted, you can delete the "downloaded" installation file from your desktop.

    Step 2.
    Add/Remove Programs
I need you to uninstall some programs from your computer.
    1. Click Start...then click Run.
    2. In the open text entry box...please copy/paste the following:
      appwiz.cpl
    3. Click the OK...button.
You may have to wait a few seconds for the program list to be "populated'.
    4. Locate the following program(s):
      Adobe Reader 8.1.2
      Search Settings 1.2
    5. Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the program.
Don't worry if you can not find all programs...some may not have an uninstall feature.
    6. Repeat steps 4 - 5 for each program in the list.
    7. When finished...close/exit Add/Remove Programs.

    Step 3.
    Update Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is out-of-date. There are serious security issues with older versions of Adobe Reader.
I'm not asking you to update the Adobe Acrobat installation... this can be quite costly. I am going to insist that you update your Adobe Reader software.
Then use the Reader for viewing PDF files... you can use the Acrobat software for your other needs.

Please download the current version of Adobe Reader...Copyright © Adobe Systems Inc.
    1. Click the yellow "Download now"... button. If you don't already have Adobe DLM... you may recieve a prompt...
    2. If prompted to install "Adobe DLM" This software is not a requirement to obtain the latest Adobe Reader software...so the choice is yours.
The Adobe (DLM) Download Manager... allows you to "pick up where you left off", if your download process is interrupted. A good idea if you are using dial-up.
If you choose to install Adobe DLM, it will start the download automatically. Adobe DLM software removal instructions available here...if wanted.
    3. If not using Adobe DLM...click on the highlighted "click here to download" text, to begin the Reader download.
Save the file to your desktop.
    4. Click on the Adobe Acrobat Reader (AdbeRdrxx_en_US.exe) icon, on your desktop... to install the new (free) version.
The Adobe Reader download file name will be different, depending on the language or OS chosen. xx in the name = version numbers.
    5. The Adobe installer will check your system and begin the installation process. Use the default installation parameters.
    6. When the installation is complete... Close and re-open your Internet browser.

An alternate to the Adobe Reader, you could try the free (for personal use) Foxit PDF Reader. The download file is smaller and when installed,
uses less resources than Adobe Reader. Note: Do not install anything dealing with AskBar... presented as an installation option.

    Step 4.

    Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
    1. Any problems following and performing these instructions
    2. New HJT log
    3. New HJT Uninstall log
    4. Let me know how your computer is behaving.
Thanks,
Wingman

It has been 3 or more days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?

Just let me know what's going on otherwise...

Unread postby Wingman » July 7th, 2009, 2:28 pm

Hello Kat,
That sounds really good. Glad to hear it ;)

Please perform these steps... these must be done in the given sequence... so if there are any problems, stop... and post back.
Read the instructions carefully first... then perform the steps. If you are unsure about anything, post back and ask before proceeding.

Let's run another online scan... to make sure there's nothing left lurking in any corners.
Additionally, there are some HJT entries that should be removed and some that can be removed.
Those that can be removed are not needed to start each time you start Windows ... and can help reduce the amount of resources used.

Step 1.
Kaspersky Online Scanner.
Please go to Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner © Kaspersky Lab to perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Click on the Image ...button.
  2. The program will launch and fill in the Information section ... on the left.
  3. Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press... the Image ...button.
  4. The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files.
It takes a while... please be patient and let it finish.
  5. Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Image ...button, if you made any changes.
  6. Now under the Scan section on the left:
      Select My Computer
  7. The program will start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  8. Save the scan results as a Text file ... save it to your desktop.
  9. Copy and paste the saved scan results file in your next reply.

Step 2.
Fix HijackThis entries
Entries that should be removed and those that can be removed.
  1. Run HijackThis
    • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  2. When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries:
*Only check those items listed below *
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
  3. After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis
  4. Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  5. Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.
Once it has fixed them, close HijackThis and reboot your computer normally.
  6. Run HijackThis again...
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Main Menu...button.
    • On the Main Menu...click on the "Do a system scan and save a Log file"...button.
  7. When the scan is finished... Notepad will open with a saved log file called "hijackthis.log"
  8. Paste the contents of hijackthis.log file in your next reply.

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problems following and performing these instructions
  2. Kaspersky scan results
  3. New HJT log
  4. Let me know how your computer is behaving.
Thanks,
Wingman

Hey.

Had some probs opening the other programme. There was no scan now button. I entered the online scanner and accepted the terms and conditions but then it said there was an error on the page and the scan didn't begin.

Removed all the files you listed.

Here is the new log...
