need help with page fault in nonpaged area error message

Unread postby CAPNJACK » June 6th, 2009, 5:00 pm

hello!
I am hoping you can analyze my HJT logs for any problems that may have caused my desktop to crash. Yesterday when i restarted the computer, I received a blue screen with the error message "page fault in nonpaged area". I had some problems the previous day with dve authoring program i downloaded from the internet so i uninstalled the program and attempeted to reboot but it would not. I put the computer in safe mode and tried a restore point but this to was unsuccessful at getting it to start. I ran a malwarebytes anti-malware scan and it came up clean. I cannot access the internet in safe mode so I am at a loss for what to try next. You were able to help me in the past and I hoping you can at least point me in the correct direction. I can send the event logs as well as the malwarebytes logs is you need them.
Thank you in advance for any advice you have.

Re: need help with page fault in nonpaged area error message

Unread postby Sharagoz » June 9th, 2009, 6:05 am

Hello CAPNJACK, welcome to MWR
Please take note of the following before we begin the cleaning process:
  • The whole process will usually take at least a week complete, sometimes several weeks depending on the severity of the infection and how promptly you and me are able to reply, so please stay patient
  • Hang in there until I give you the 'All clean'. If you leave prematurely because your computer seems to be back to its old self, the risk of re-infection will be very high
  • Perform all actions in the order given
  • The instructions I give expect that you're using an account with administrator privileges and that the language of your operating system is English.
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions if something is unclear or you run into issues during cleaning steps
  • I recommend you read through each set of instructions before you actually perform them

The first thing you should do is to subscribe to this topic.
In the top left corner of your opening post there is a link called Subscribe topic. If you click it you will be subscribed to this thread and will receive instant email notification of new replies. Most find that this works better than periodically checking back here to see if there's any new posts.

The second thing you should do is to take a backup of everything you have on the computer that's important not to lose.
I will do my best to ensure a safe removal procedure, but it does happen on rare occations that computers does not make it through disinfection and must be reinstalled.

Download and run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen to start the scanner
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt in your next reply

Are you unable to boot into normal mode at the moment and need to do everything in safemode?

Hello Sharagoz,
Pleased to meet you! Yes it is true that my desktop will only boot in safemode so I am having to use the laptop to connect to the internet. Here are the RSTI logs, I hope they prove useful.
Talk to you soon,
Capnjack

Re: need help with page fault in nonpaged area error message

Unread postby Sharagoz » June 10th, 2009, 1:19 pm

What happens when you try to boot into normal mode?

If you get a blue screen, could you tell me:
- what the error is (E.G "page_fault_in_none_paged_area")
- what the stop code is (E.G "stop: 0x000007B")
- any file name that is listed (E.G xxxxxx.sys, xxxxxxx.dll)

I'd like to see a GMER log
Download and run GMER
  • Download gmer.zip by GMER from here and extract it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch the program
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver to load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning, click the Rootkit/Malware tab and then Scan
(The scan typically takes around 30 minutes to complete)
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
(There is no message displayed when the scan is finished, it will simply stop going through files)
  • A log will now be copied to the clip board
  • Paste this log into your next reply

And a DDS log
Download and run DDS by sUBs
  • Download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop
    Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • Double-click the file to run the tool
  • A black window will stay open while the tool runs
  • Wait for the scan to finish (this will only take a couple of minutes), and two logs to open in separate notepad documents
  • Include both these logs in your next reply

Hi Sharagoz,

When I try to boot in normal mode, this is the message that comes up on a blue screen: PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA
STOP: 0X00000050 (0XED1D5161, 0X00000000, 0X8053CE22, 0X00000000).

While running the GMER scan a blue screen came up about 8 minutes into it. The message on the blue screen said: PFN LIST CORRUPT
STOP: 0X0000004E (0X00000007, 0X000069B8, 0X00000002, 0X00000000).

The DDS program ran fine and here are the log files

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.
IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT

Ok, do the following in safe mode:
  • Go to Start -> Run type in cmd and press Enter
  • In the command window that opens, type chkdsk /f and press Enter
  • You will then be asked if you want to run a disk check at the next startup, agree to this by typing Y and pressing Enter
  • Restart your computer (dont power it off and on, make it do an actual restart)
  • Now a disk check should start
  • When the scan has finished, see if you are able to boot into normal mode
  • Also try to run GMER again, regardless of whether or not you're able to boot into normal mode
  • If you continue to get blue screens, post the error codes like you did in your last post

Ran disk check from command prompt and then tried to boot in normal mode. Would not boot as it went to blue screen with the page fault error as before.
Tried to reboot in safe mode but computer hung at a list of drivers and then rebooted itself into normal mode. Went to blue screen with page fault error.
Rebooted into safe mode.
Ran complete GMER scan and here are results:

I dont think these issues got anything to do with malware.

I suspect something is phyiscally wrong with your computer.
And I also suspect this has caused damage to your operating system.
Meaning we may have a combination of hardware and software problems.
Those problems can be tricky to figure out, because the symptoms becomes diffuse.

For instance, GMER crashed at the first attempt, and then ran fine after a chkdsk, which may actually have nothing to do with chkdsk itself.
But after chkdsk, you were unable to boot into safe mode on the first try, you needed two tries.
When random errors happen, especially during the boot process, the first thing I suspect is bad ram.

But on the other hand, you are never able to boot into normal mode, and booting into normal mode always causes the same error.
This does not sound like bad ram at all. The error you get when booting into normal mode indicate a disk problem, file structure problem, or something wrong with the OS.
So basically, the symptoms are conflicting, and usually when I see that, there is more than one problem (or there could of course be a rare problem I've never encountered before).

If we're going to pursue this further we're getting into advanced trouble shooting. I dont know how experienced a PC user you are, but if I say that the next step is to run a program for testing the ram by burning a bootable CD from a downloaded image, and booting from that CD, does that sound completly greek?

The final solution might be something like replacing a faulty memory stick and then run a repair install on the operating system.
I would recommend you actually turn your computer in at a repair shop, unless you got a keen interest in solving problems yourself, because this one could take a big effort.
Since I am not able to be phyiscally present in front of your computer I can only give limited help, and with problems like these you can never be certan that a solution will work until you've tested it, so all I can do is keep trying.

I am definitely willing and able to burn a bootable cd from a downloaded image and basically try anything you think may work. I will go as far as you are willing and stop when you say it's time. Thank you so much for all your hard work. All of the important files are backed up to an external hard drive so if we aren't able to revive it, I may end up buying another one. Please let me know if you want to continue and if not I certainly respect that. Again thank you!

Ok, here's how you do the memory test:

  • Click here to download Memtest86+
  • This is a zip file and you will need to open it and extract the file memtest86+-2.11.iso, which is the file you are going to make the boot CD from
  • I dont know which burning software you are using, but start it and try to find an option called something like "Burn CD from disk image"
  • Once you have created the CD, leave it in the CD/DVD-rom and restart the computer
(the program is small, so it should be made in no time)
  • If you have the CD/DVD-rom at higher boot priority than the hard drive, then the program should start automatically
  • If the program does not start by itself when you restart the computer, then you will most likely need to change the boot priority settings in the BIOS
  • Here's a screen shot of what the test looks like
  • If something is wrong, errors will start to get reported. See this screenshot for an example
  • There are different opinions of how long memtest should be run before you can declare the ram OK. Some say 3 passes, some say 10 passes
  • I say just let it run over night
  • That is only if no errors are encountered though. If you start to get errors, you might as well abort the test. Even just one error is enough to determine that something is wrong, and sometimes you get errors within seconds.
  • If everything is physically fine with the machine, memtest should be able to run for weeks without errors

What are we going to do if errors are discovered?
Lets cross that bridge when we get there.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
