Hello tan_pang,

Was wondering if it is safe to do secure online transactions on my computer at this time? Also any progress with the problem?

Sorry, I still can't give you the answer now because I still inspecting your log.
Please give me some time, thanks... :notworthy:

If you need to do online transactions urgently, please do it on another computer that you sure it is safe.

I must draw your attention to the >malwareremoval< policy regarding P2P programs. You must uninstall all P2P programs and post a fresh HijackThis log before I can continue with cleaning your computer.

Please remove or uninstall the following P2P program:
    µTorrent

*NOTE* Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

If you continue to use P2P programs, we see no purpose in cleaning your machine as it is pretty much certain that, if you continue to use them, your computer will get infected again.

=================================================================================

Please run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe \services.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"\services.exe"
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZC
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9819CC0E-9669-4D01-9CD7-2C66DA43AC6C} - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Now please close ALL open windows except HijackThis and press "Fix checked".

Then please exit HijackThis.

=================================================================================

Please use Internet Explorer and go to here then click on: Image
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

=================================================================================

In next post, please include:
  • The ESET online scan log
  • A fresh HijackThis log
  • and the condition of the computer (like any other symptom or computer performance).

Some computer "issues":

1 "Windows cannot find services.exe" pop up appears other than at startup (after Explorer crashed.. which happens quite regularly recently)

2 Seem to get many "backup copies" of Word docs appearing

3 Right click does not work with links in IE7 or 8 (but works with Opera or in URL line of IE)

4 Panda Active scan found Trj/CI.A trojan (I did not remove) not sure it is still there

Hope you can help

Hello tan_pang,

Since I did the - HijackThis and press "Fix checked" (as advised), I now find:

A) I have booted twice and DID NOT SEE "Cannot find services.exe" !! (Is it cured??)

B) Re Computer issues: Right click now working with IE7 & Panda found Trj/CI.A again (but says "low level", I did not remove it)

C) Computer seems faster !!

  1. Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  2. Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  5. Once done, click on Copy.
  6. Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file and post it in your next reply.

Glad to see that it become better. :)
Can you tell me where the Panda found the variant of Win32/Kryptik.O trojan?

==================================================

B) Re Computer issues: Right click now working with IE7

For this issue, I think you can try the step been stated in here
(5)Hyperlinks not working

Hyperlinks will not work if a computer system does not know which Web browser is set as the default, which happens if the settings that control this choice are damaged or incorrect. The easiest way to fix the problem is to allow your preferred Web browser to rewrite the appropriate settings by resetting your default browser. Rather than walk through the steps required to achieve this in this column, I refer you to my previous column about how to set up your browser as the default.

==================================================

To determine whether it is just false positive or real infection from any scan you did before, the step below is to use another online scanner to check for it.

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan.
  • Go here to run an online scan from F-Secure
  • Click on Start scanning
  • This will open a new internet explorer window
  • It will require an activex control, please install it
  • Click Accept
  • Click Full System Scan
  • It will now download the scanner, this may take a while, please be patient
  • It will then start scanning, wait for the scan to finish
  • Click Automatic cleaning (recommended)
  • Wait for it finish the cleaning process
  • Click show report
  • This will open up a window with the results of the scan, copy and paste those results as a reply to this topic.

==================================================

In next post, please post:
  • The file's location of the Win32/Kryptik.O infection
  • F-Secure online scan log
  • The computer condition now

Please download the latest version of JRE 6 Update 13.

  • Scroll down to where it says "JRE 6 Update 13".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform (windows) and check the box that says: "Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement .".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK.
  • A log file will pop up. You can save it to a convenient location.

==========================================================================

Now, your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
    • Right-click on the My Computer on Desktop, and choose Properties
    • Click on the System Restore tab, and check the box Turn off System Restore on all drives
    • Click Apply and reboot your computer.
    • After reboot, right-click My Computer on Desktop, choose Properties and go back to System Restore tab, turn the System Restore 'On' afterward by unticking the same checkbox & click OK
  2. DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
    From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
    • Select "Do not show hidden files and folders"
    • Tick - Hide file extensions for known types
    • Tick - Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
    Click Yes to confirm & then click OK
  3. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
    It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. FIREWALL
    Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here ? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html
  5. Microsoft Windows Update ? http://www.windowsupdate.com
    Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    Alternatively, you can enable the automatic update by follow the instruction in here ? http://www.microsoft.com/protect/comput ... es/mu.mspx
  6. SPYWAREBLASTER
    SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of malicious ActiveX, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies & restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites.

    Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here ? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

    ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

    NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein - http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4959

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

Have a safe & happy computing day. Image
