Symptoms

Computer running slow. It also seems to just be "working awfully hard" gets hung up all the time, etc.

something new that's been happening is that i'll go to a certain website using AOL. after finishing with that certain site, i "x" out of it, then EXPLORER opens up page after page after page. it just keeps popping up, it freezes my computer to the point where i have to either unplug the internet or reboot.

Other times, i'll be using explorer and i'll click on an page to listen to music, and AOL will automatically start up and KEEP signing me on. then, if i minimize the page, the aol page keeps "popping up"...

i have had experience with removing malware in the past with older computers, but nothing like this has happened with this computer (it is a few years old).

i have run adaware, spybot, and a few other system checks...

Download and Install CCleaner

• Download CCleaner from here . Choose the Slim version.
• Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
• Click OK
• Click Next
• Click I agree
• Click Next
• Click Install
• Once the installation has finished, click Finish

Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).

• Select Cleaner Settings.
• Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
• In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
• In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
• Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
  Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
• Set Cookie Retention.
  Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
  Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
• Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
  Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the Scanner http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.

log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )

Thanks for your help.

Soulseek is listed as one of your p2p as being safe, so i did not uninstall it. let me know if that is a huge problem. i've used it for years, and never had any problems with malware, etc...

Disable Spybot 1.6 Resident Protection (TeaTimer)
Click the Spybot-S&D icon to run it.
Next:
In the Mode menu item at the top, click on Advanced mode
Click the Yes button.
Select Tools in the navigation bar on the left.
Select Resident in the navigation bar on the left.
Untick the two checkboxes under Resident protection Status. Allow the change if asked.
In the File menu item at the top, choose Exit.

Disable Ad-Aware Service
This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled

Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, highlight, if found, and press Delete.

C:\Program Files\uTorrent\ <== this folder only

You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.

For your info, Acrobat 4 and Acrobat 5 are known (to me) to have defective updaters.
If your system appears to hang at any time, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager.
Look for a process named something like AcroUpd.exe or Adobeupd.exe and terminate it.
Your Acrobat 4 should have any and all "Search for updates" unchecked, if you can find any options for that inside the program.
We will fix the HiJackThis log so it doesn't have a standing call to check for Acrobat updates.

Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).

• Select Cleaner Settings.
• Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
• In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, Memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
• In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
• Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
  Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
• Set Cookie Retention.
  Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
  Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
• Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
  Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
It is the 2nd item on the page, called JRE 6 Update 14
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.

Now let's see if there are any unwanted files on here. Otherwise we will concentrate on just speeding things up.

Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.

• Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
• Click the Updates tab and Check for UpdatesI f an Update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
• Once the program is running, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• If it found any malware items. Be sure that every item is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
• The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents. The logs are listed and named by time/date stamp.

• Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan.
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Please post this log in your next reply.

There are a number of things you can do to speed up your machine, once you are sure it is free of malware:

• Not enough Disk Space free. Windows would like 20% of the drive to be Free Space.
  

  You can check free space using My Computer, right click on drive C:, choose Properties and see the used and free space listed.

• Too many temporary Files
  

  TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

  TFC will automatically close any open programs. Let it run uninterrupted.
  It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds.
  It may insist on Rebooting to finish removals. Allow it to do so.

• Indexing service spending too much time re-indexing files, and using too much disk space. Can be disabled from Drive properties.
  

  From Start, My Computer right-click on drive C:. Choose Properties.
  At the bottom of the dialog uncheck the box labeled "Allow Indexing Service to Index this disk for Faster File Searching".
  Click Apply and OK
  If you are asked whether this should be applied to all Files and Folders, answer Yes/OK.
  Wait. This can take a 5-10 minutes.

• Too many running processes from startups.
  

  Examine your Installed Programs List (Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs) for items you don't use, and remove them

• Too long without defragmenting your drive(s)
  

  Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk defragmenter.
  Highlight the C: drive and choose Defragment
  Wait Until it notifies you it's complete. This can take quite a while if it hasn't been done recently.
  It is especially slow if there is not enough free space on the drive. (It may take several hours).
  Many users let it run overnight.

• Too many Restore Points on the Drive.
  

  Reset System Restore Points
  

  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.

  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.

  This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
  This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as an infrequent cleanup.
