Hi, Kat
Welcome to the Malware Removal forum.

My name is Wingman, and I'll be helping you with your malware problems.
HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

I am currently under the guidance of the MRU teachers, everything I post to you, has been reviewed by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses...but not too much.
;)

Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. Please, if you have questions about something...ASK, don't guess or assume.
  3. Please -only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  4. Please -only- reply to this thread, do not start another!
  5. Please do not run any other fix/removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  6. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

If you follow these guidelines, things should proceed smoothly. :)
I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Thanks,
Wingman

Hello Kat

P2P Warning!
IMPORTANT There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
Blubster
Please note that as long as you are using any form of P2P networking to download files you can anticipate infestations of malware to occur.
P2P file sharing used to be fairly safe. This is no longer true...continue to use P2P sharing ...at your own risk!
Keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.
References... siting the risk factors, of using P2P programs:
Malware: Help prevent the Infection
How to Prevent the Online Invasion of Spyware and Adware

I strongly recommend that you uninstall: Blubster
You can do so using the Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs function.
As long as you have P2P program(s) installed, per Malware Removal Forum Policy, I can offer you no further assitance.

After you have removed ALL the P2P programs installed, please do the following:

Step 2.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  4. The first one, "log.txt", will be maximized
  5. The second one, "info.txt", will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. RSIT log.txt file contents
  2. RSIT info.txt file contents
Thanks,
Wingman

It has been 3 or more days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?

Hello Kat,
Thanks for the work you've done... :)

The RSIT log file report is incomplete. There is quite a bit more information in the log.txt file after the HijackThis log portion of the report.
The log.txt file should be located:
C:\RSIT\log.txt
Please post the entire contents of the "log.txt" file.

If you can not locate the file or it is not complete, then follow the instructions previously given to download RSIT,
and save it to your desktop. We may need to run it again and this will save you, the download time.
Once the program is on your Desktop... please delete the C:\RSIT folder, if present, and run RSIT again...
post both the
log.txt file and the
info.txt file contents again.

Thanks,
Wingman

3 Day Bump
Hello... Kat :)
It has been 3 or more days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems understanding or following my instructions?
Just let me know what's going on otherwise...
If, after 48 hrs., you have not replied to this thread... it will have to be closed!

Re: So very very slow

Unread postby Wingman » May 28th, 2009, 1:32 pm

Hello Kat,

Looking over the various logs you've supplied, it appears that there are several Anti-virus programs installed and 2 Firewalls installed.
The logs reflect the following programs:
Authentium AntiVirus
PCGuard Anti-virus
Norton 360
with PCGuard and Norton both having a firewall process.

Please let me know if you have more than 1 Anti-virus process providing (active) real-time protection. As well as more than 1 active firewall.
Multiple Antivirus Programs
Authentium AntiVirus
PCGuard Anti-virus
Norton 360

Running - more than one - antivirus program is not recommended because:
  1. They can conflict with each other.
  2. Report the other antivirus software as malicious.
  3. Antivirus programs use an enormous amount of computer's resources... actively scanning your computer.
  4. Can cause your computer to become unstable...run slowly and even, in rare cases, crash.
I strongly suggest you uninstall all but one of them. Which one, is your decision.
Running more than 1 firewall can cause multiple checks, against any filtering taking place, causing Internet access to become slow and sporadic.

These program can typically be uninstalled using Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs function.
Let me know if you have any questions about removing multiple AV's or Firewalls.

If you have uninstalled any Anti-virus program and/or any Firewall process, please reboot your machine (normally) before proceeding.

Let's clean up some things now. If at any time you don't understand a process, my instructions or have a question about something we are doing, please don't hesitate to ask.

Please print these instructions for reference, as you will not have Internet access during some of the steps.
Please perform the following steps:

Step 1.
SDFix
Please print out the instructions for using SDFix in BC's self-help tutorial "How to Use SDFix Tutorial"...for reference.
  1. Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta... save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  2. Disconnect from the Internet and disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan.

    Install
  3. Click the SDFix icon on your desktop...if Security warning box opens, click Run
  4. Click the Install...button to install SDFix to the "default" location...
(%systemdrive% ...drive that contains the Windows directory, typically C:\SDFix).
    Boot to Safe Mode
Make sure you have downloaded anything you need... print these instructions as well, you will not have Internet access!
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Continually tap the F8 key... as your computer is booting (when menu appears).
  7. Use up-arrow key to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.
If you have a multiple boot system (more than 1 OS installed) or you have Recovery Console installed...
you will be shown the multi boot screen.
    • Highlight the OS you want to start.
    • Press Enter
  8. Once the system starts ...it will show various files/drivers being loaded...it may pause...just be patient.
    When Windows loads...your desktop...
  9. Reply "Yes" to the Safe Mode startup, if prompted.

    Run
  10. Once in Safe Mode, please do the following:
    1. Open the extracted folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    2. Type "Y" to begin the cleanup process.
    3. It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found, then prompt you to press any key to continue...
    4. Press any key and it will restart the PC.
    5. When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process, then display
"Finished", press any key to... ending the script and loads your desktop icons.
    6. If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report.
    7. Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as "Report.txt"
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    8. Finally, copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.

Note: If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, you will need to fix the policy restrictions created by this infection.
Open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu.
Then reboot to apply the changes.

** Please be sure to enable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.

Step 2.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download site available here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  4. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  5. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  6. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
  3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

If you have not rebooted your machine after running MBAM, please do so now... then proceed with the next steps.

Step 3.
Update HijackThis
Your version of HijackThis is out of date & needs to be updated. Having an outdated version may not give a reliable log.
Download HijackThis © Trend Micro Incorporated. All rights reserved.
Save it to your desktop. Alternate link site here.

NOTE:When you have successfully downloaded the new version of HijackThis (HJT) ...
Please uninstall any other versions of HijackThis you have, before installing the new version.

  1. Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop, to begin the install.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  2. Click on Install
It will create a HiJackThis icon on the desktop
  3. Once installed, it will launch HiJackThis
  4. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a Log file"...button. When the scan is finished...
Notepad will open with a saved log file called "hijackthis.log"
If you have a previously saved "hijackthis.log" file... allow the new one to replace it.
  5. In the Hijackthis log, go to the top menu, click on "Format" and uncheck "Word Wrap" if checked.
  6. Copy and paste the contents of hijackthis.log file in your next reply.
Do not fix anything yourself...most entries are needed to run your computer.
Removing any needed entries... your computer could become inoperable!.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Whether or not you had multiple AVs and Firewalls running and which have been removed.
  2. SDFix - Report.txt contents
  3. MBAM log report
  4. New HijackThis (HJT) log
Thanks,
Wingman

Hello.

I have managed to remove the PCGuard programme but cannot find the Authentium programme on the Add/Remove page. I have done a search and have found a folder called Authentium but am only given the option to delete the programme rather than remove it. Would this work or is there another way to remove the programme.

Thanks Kat.

Hello Kat,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you.

If at any time you have a question about some instructions or don't understand something, please post back and let me know.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs... once the list is populated, locate:
Hijackthis 1.99.1
and remove/uninstall it.

Then perform the following:

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process
  3. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  4. Use the default install settings... say "NO" to the section that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  5. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  6. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  7. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  8. Click on OK
  9. Then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK".
  5. At the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  6. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.

If you did not successfully complete the above ERUNT step... STOP ... do not continue. Post back an let me know what happened!

Step 2.
OTM
  1. Please download OTM.exe...by Old Timer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on OTM.exe to run it.
If you receive the "Open File - Security Warning", please press Run.
  3. Please copy and paste the text in the Code box below, into OTM (1).

Hello Kat,

Malware can morph over time and make changes to your system, I need to see these if they occur. With this in mind, it is best, while we are trying to clean your machine,
that you don't make any changes to your system or download/install any additional software (unless instructed by me). If you do, it adds more variables to the picture, making it harder to analyze the problems.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation. :)

I noticed... you either didn't run or didn't post the output from the steps (SDFix and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) requested in a previous post.
It is very important that you follow the instructions being given.
Execute the steps in the order presented and let me know when you have a problem with any one of my instructions or steps.

Sorry you had trouble with OTM. Let's forget about that process for the moment and get the other (earlier) requested processes run.

Please read... then perform the following steps:
Please print these instructions, you will not have Internet (browser) access during certain steps.

Step 1.
SDFix
Please print out the instructions for using SDFix in BC's self-help tutorial "How to Use SDFix Tutorial"...for reference.
If you have a version of SDFix already, please remove it and download it again. This process is constantly being updated.

If you previously downloaded this program, no need to download again...
  1. Execute the program... then select the "Update"...tab.
  2. Press the "Check for Updates"...button.
MBAM will connect and download any available updates.
  3. Press OK at the prompt indicating the latest update version or that you are up-to-date.
  4. Press the "Scanner"...tab.
  5. Proceed to the On the Scanner tab: instructions below and continue.

If you HAVE NOT downloaded MBAM...

Hello Kat,

Good... glad to see there is some improvement... lets continue :)

Please print these instructions, you will have to reboot your machine.

It's possible that you missed this instruction, in one of my previous posts.
Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs... once the list is populated, locate:
Hijackthis 1.99.1
and remove/uninstall it. Yes... uninstall it.
Your version of HJT is out-of-date and may not produce reliable logs. Running the RSIT utility, automatically runs
the current version of HJT.

Once the above is accomplished... please perform the following steps:

Step 1.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Reboot
It looks like there were some files to be removed by MBAM during a reboot...
  1. Please reboot your machine now... let's make sure MBAM removed the files it needed to, on reboot.
  2. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
  3. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button.
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  4. Press the Scanner tab...
  5. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  6. Check everything to be removed, except the System Volume entries (just like before)...
  7. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  8. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

Step 2.
Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  3. RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the LOG.txt file ...will be produced.
  4. The "log.txt", will be maximized
Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Let me know whether you were able to successfully execute these instructions.
  2. MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) output
  3. New RSIT LOG.txt file contents.
Thanks,
Wingman
