Hi

I have been having problems in opening web browser - IE8 would not open. Reinstalled it and now it opens very slowly............tried Firefox and it also takes about a minute to open. Chrome opens normally ...

I have run Spybot and MBAM and removed a couple of problems ( Adaware will not run which may be connected)..........please can someone have a look at my Hijack log and advise me - thanks in advance

paul1011,
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here . Choose the Slim version.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
  • Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
  • In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
Please post the contents of install.txt in your next post.
--------------------------------------------------------
Run DDS
Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file. If it does, please turn off your AntiVirus first.
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • When finished DDS.txt will open. Save it so you can retrieve it later if necessary.
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open. Save it but don't post it.
  • Post the contents of DDS.txt

(Remember to turn your AntiVirus back on if you stopped it for the scan.)

So we are looking for the Installed programs list from CCleaner, and the log file from the DDS scanner.

paul1011,
Some things are likely interfering with each other. Let's start over.
----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Programs, one at a time, and click the Run Uninstaller button for each one.
Wait for completion of each one before highlighting and Uninstalling the next.

Ad-Aware
Advanced SystemCare 3
SpywareBlaster 4.1
Spybot - Search & Destroy
RAMBooster.Net
PC Pitstop Optimize2 2.0

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
--------------------------------------------------------
Check Disk for Space
Go to My Computer, right click the C: drive and choose Properties.
Please record what it reports for Used space and Free space on the drive and report that back in your next post.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Check to see whether the machine is running differently.
We are looking for the Used and Free space on C:\, and the contents of checkhd.txt

paul1011,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
Delete checkhd.txt from your desktop.
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After it boots up and you sign in:
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Hi paul,
Your software system is generally OK.
However, your hard drive is not.
16 KB in bad sectors.
After "fixing", this is NOT OK.
You should shop for and replace your hard drive as soon as possible, before you begin to lose things.
I don't believe you have any malware problem on your system.
If you need any help with a new hard drive, there are very competent Hardware/system forums out there:
