Tried Basic fixes, computer still painfully slow

Unread postby Confused09 » June 2nd, 2009, 9:08 pm

As the topic says, I have tried the basic fixes of running AVG, defraging, cleaning temp files and such but my computer is still very, very slow. It normally does not act this way and I am hoping that someone can assist me with a reason for this.

Thanks for all your help!!

Hello Confused09, welcome to MWR
Please take note of the following before we begin the cleaning process:
  • The whole process will usually take at least a week complete, sometimes several weeks depending on the severity of the infection and how promptly you and me are able to reply, so please stay patient
  • Hang in there until I give you the 'All clean'. If you leave prematurely because your computer seems to be back to its old self, the risk of re-infection will be very high
  • Perform all actions in the order given
  • The instructions I give expect that you're using an account with administrator privileges and that the language of your operating system is English.
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions if something is unclear or you run into issues during cleaning steps
  • I recommend you read through each set of instructions before you actually perform them

The first thing you should do is to subscribe to this topic.
In the top left corner of your opening post there is a link called Subscribe topic. If you click it you will be subscribed to this thread and will receive instant email notification of new replies. Most find that this works better than periodically checking back here to see if there's any new posts.

The second thing you should do is to take a backup of everything you have on the computer that's important not to lose.
I will do my best to ensure a safe removal procedure, but it does happen on rare occations that computers does not make it through disinfection and must be reinstalled.

Download and run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen to start the scanner
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt in your next reply

Have you seen any other signs of malware besides the machine being slow?

Thanks for responding to my problem. To answer your question, no I don't see any other outward signs other then incredibly slow performance. When I say slow, I mean back to the 56k modem days almost. I noticed a slowdown then it has gotten really bad without me adding new programs or making other changes.

Here are the logs you requested:

Re: Tried Basic fixes, computer still painfully slow

Unread postby Sharagoz » June 6th, 2009, 5:05 pm

P2P warning
You have LimeWire installed on your computer. This is a peer-to-peer program used to share files between computers.
There are several issues related to this:
  • P2P programs are notorious for being bundled with unwanted adware/spyware programs
  • Poorly configured P2P programs can share more files than you want them too, including personal files
  • Since its impossible to establish the source of which you are copying files from, you will always be at a certan risk every time you download a file. Malware written to spesifically spread through P2P networks are becoming an increasing problem and may be the source of your current infection. Even if you can trust the P2P program itself, you can never trust the sources you download from.

By MWR policy I am forced to ask that you uninstall this program if you wish me to further help you with your issues.
For more info, read MWR policy on P2P programs

To uninstall the program, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following:
LimeWire 4.12.6

While you are there you can also uninstall this:
Contextual Tool

If you chose to continue, then

Download and run DDS by sUBs
  • Download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop
    Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • Double-click the file to run the tool
  • A black window will stay open while the tool runs
  • Wait for the scan to finish (this will only take a couple of minutes), and two logs to open in separate notepad documents
  • Include both these logs in your next reply

When I say slow, I mean back to the 56k modem days almost

Is the slowness only during surfing (when you use a web browser), or is the computer slow in general (when using other programs)?
Is the time the computer takes to start up normal?

I have uninstalled LimeWire and the Contextual tool programs.

As for the slow, it is most noticed when web browsing. This is both with IE and Firefow browsers. I have not noticed a difference in the startup time of the computer.

Here are the logs:

I am not sure if I posted the second log correctly. The popup window said to zip this and attach it to the postl, but you said to just post it. By default I tried to do as you asked. If you need the zipped file, I have that saved as well.

Thanks for you quick response to this, I appreciated the time you are putting into this.

1) Fix bad entry using HiJackThis
  • Launch HiJackThis
  • Click the Do a system scan only button
  • Put a checkmark next to the below line

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe

  • IMPORTANT: Do NOT click fix until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now
  • Click the Fix checked button and close HiJackThis

Restart your computer after this step and then let me know if the browsers behave differently

2) Download and run GMER
  • Download gmer.zip by GMER from here and extract it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch the program
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver to load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning, click the Rootkit/Malware tab and then Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • A log will now be copied to the clip board
  • Paste the log into your next reply

Your system log indicate that your computers network connection may not be 100% stable.
The issue may not be with the computer.
Are there any other computers that share your connection?
If so, are they having similar problems?
How are you connected to the internet?

Also, this:
Total RAM: 511 MB (11% free)

512mb ram is not much for WinXP.
Running out of ram can cause extreme slowness. However, if this were the problem, every application should be affected, not just the web browsers.

I did everything in Step one that you asked me to do. I did not see any difference in the speed.

As for the connection questions:
I connect directly through an Ethernet cable(no wireless) to a Qwest Broadband modem. As for the stability of the connection, I really have no idea about that(call me dumb) It had always just worked for me in the last almost 2 years i have had the same service.

I realize that I should have more RAM, just kept putting it off. I suppose now is a good kick in the pants to go update that a bit.

I did not go to step two until I posted this and got a response as you stated to do in your last post.

Thanks!

Go ahead and do step 2.

Do you have another computer in the house that you can use to test the connection with?

I started to go through Step 2 as you asked and this is what happened. I was able to do everything in the step through starting the scan. The first time that it ran it froze up the computer. I then restarted the computer and let it run overnight.

I came back this morning to what appeared to be a finished scan, though there was no box or text saying it was completed. It was not searching through files anymore and this was eight hours of scanning time. I saved what it had into a log and attached it below.

To answer your earlier question, no I do not have another computer to test the connection with.

Also, This time when I opened Firefox, I had a window pop up containing the following information:

Warning:
Object doesn't support this property or method
Line 1245
Char 5
res://nmrsrc.dll/mainwnd.htm

It then asked if i wanted to continue running scripts on this page and I clicked no.

I wasn't sure if this was due to my homepage(msn.com) so I switched to another homepage and tried again with cnn.com and it did the same. I don't know if this is a clue to the problem or not but thought I should let you know.

You are right, GMER doesnt display a message when its done. It simply stops going through files.

Your logs so far has been as good as clean, except for what looked like a couple of leftovers from a previous infection. We'll do two more scans here and if nothing significant comes up we'll declare the machine clean, and start looking elsewhere for the problem.

1) Download and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and install the program
  • At the end, make sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version
  • Once the program has loaded, click Check for updates
  • Click select Perform quick scan, then click Scan to start scanning
(This scan is normally completed in less than 10 minutes)
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply
Note:
If you for some reason lose the log, it can be retrieved manually from this location:
[WinXP] C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
[WinVista] C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logsmbam-log-date (time).txt
Vista users must enable the viewing of hidden files

2) Run ESET's online scanner
  • Go here using Internet Explorer:
    http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/run_scanner.php
  • Put a checkmark next to Yes, I accept the Terms of Use and click the Start button
  • If prompted about installing ActiveX, allow it and click Install
  • If there is a checkmark next to Remove found threats, remove the checkmark and then click Start
  • The scanner will initialize and then start scanning. It will normally take 0.5 - 2 hours to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, close Internet Explorer
  • A log will be located here
    C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Include this log in your next reply

3) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log will open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Logs I need:
MBAM log
ESET log
HJT log

Re: Tried Basic fixes, computer still painfully slow

Ok, ESET picked up a few malicious files, but nothing that can be called an active infection.
The first two files are infected MP3's, a good example of why downloading music with P2P programs is risky.
The last 3 files are leftovers from a previous infection.

I'll provide you with a procedure on how to remove them manually in case they are hidden.
After you've deleted them your computer can be declared clean.

Delete malicious files
  • Press the windows key and the R key at the same time to open the Run dialog box
(the windows key is usually located two to the left of the space bar and is labeled with a windows logo)
  • Type control folders and press enter
  • A control panel should now open.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option and click Yes at the warning prompt.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
  • Now locate and delete the below files

    C:\Documents and Settings\Philip\My Documents\My Music\LimeWiremusic\coldest kayne CD quality.mp3
    C:\Documents and Settings\Philip\My Documents\My Music\LimeWiremusic\radarlove.mp3
    C:\WINDOWS\screengenie.scr
    C:\WINDOWS\Config\yekcp.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xmforgert.exe

  • If you are unable to find or unable to delete any of these files, let me know
  • Empty the recycle bin
  • Now you should undo the changes you made for viewing hidden files

If that went smoothly, lets start looking at what might be the cause for slow internet sufring.

The best thing to do first is to either test your computer on a different network or test a different computer on your network.
This way you can determine whether or not the problem is with the computer.

However, as I've understood you wont be able to do this so lets try something else.

What I want you to do is to use a built in tool called "MSconfig" to disable all 3 party applications from starting up and then test if the problem is still the same.

  • Go to Start -> Run, type in "msconfig" and press Enter
  • Select the Services tab
  • Put a checkmark next to Hide all microsoft services so that we dont disable OS services
  • Then click Disable all to disable all non-microsoft services and click Apply
  • Now select the Startup tab
  • Click Disable all, click Apply and then OK to exit
  • When asked about restarting, allow it

After the computer has restarted test how the browsers behave and let me know if the problem is still the same.
As soon as you've come to a conclusion we need to reverse the changes we did.

  • Go to Start -> Run, type in "msconfig" and press Enter
  • Under the General tab select Normal startup
  • Press OK and then restart your computer
  • This will reverse all the services and startup items we disabled

I deleted all of the files that you listed with no problem. I then made all the changes you asked me to do and restarted.

First, the script error popup did not come up this time, just thought I should mention that. I don't know if it matters, but i figured it couldn't hurt to mention. As for the speed with these changes, I really see no difference in the loading of most common pages and common tasks. that is images on the page and such. They almost load line by line.

I am now changing the settings back as you instructed me to do.

Thanks.

Ok, then the scripting error is caused by one of the applications you have on auto-start. We'll look at it later.

Has the modem been restarted since the problems began?
If not, do so by pulling the plug.

Could you also run a SpeedTest and tell me what values you are getting?
(Click the yellow star on the map to begin the test)
