Unread postby NeedMalHelp » May 26th, 2009, 12:26 am

Following are some of the problems that I am experiencing:
- Almost all functions run through the Start/Run command are unavailable (e.g., regedit, services)
- Task Manager is unavailable
- System restore is unavailable
- Firewall options are unavailable
- User Accounts are unavailable
- Anti-spy websites were previously blocked
- The ehRec.exe process was being used to run my CPU to 100%, but I now have that under control

Thanks in advance for any help available!

Re: Need to enable many basic windows functions.

Hello,

Couple of questions before we begin:

The symptoms you described in your first post, do those still stand? I.E. regedit, task manager, system restore not working.
As you have malwarebytes, are you able to update and run a scan with the program?

Lastly, post a new Hijackthis log.

I still have the problems.

I am using Process Explorer to view my CPU usage. Sometimes I see ehRec.exe getting hijacked aggressively and other times it is quite tame. I debug it and that makes it go dormant. Regardless, the problems that you asked about are always still out of commission.

I can update and run Malwarebytes. I ran another quick scan and it just came up with one Trojan.

Below is my latest logfile. Hope this helps! Thanks again!

Re: Need to enable many basic windows functions.

Unread postby Wi[k]! » June 1st, 2009, 8:19 pm

From your log I see your running Windows Defender. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it. To disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection.

  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender

Note: Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.
--------------------------------------------------

It appears you are running two anti-virus applications simultaneously. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. Decide which one you'd like to keep and uninstall the other one. I, however do not see any sign of McAfee in your uninstall list so you will need to use the uninstaller here to uninstall McAfee.
--------------------------------------------------

Click on start > run > type in: appwiz.cpl and press enter. From the list uninstall the following:

Internet Explorer Default Page
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
MyWay Search Assistant
Adobe Reader 7.0.9

Download and install the latest version of adobe reader from here and java from here.

Important - reboot your computer after doing the above.

Post a new Hijackthis log in your next reply.

Re: Need to enable many basic windows functions.

I have done the following:
- Deactivated Windows Defender
- Uninstalled McAfee
- Removed all of the items you suggested (with the exception of the Internet Explorer Default Page, which was not available on the Add or Remove Programs page)
- Reinstalled the latest Java and Adobe downloads

I am open on any suggestions you would have on deleting or keeping any remaining anti-virus software. I put so much on here that I don't know which is actually anti-virus vs. mal-ware protection.

One other thing that I forgot to mention initially is that my Windows logon screen has been changed somehow where it does not list all of the users of the computer on the screen so you can just click on one to log in. Now you have to type your name in a small log on screen (don't know if this is connected to the other problems).

Below is the latest Log File:

Thanks once again for your help!

Open up Malwarebytes and click on the update tab and click on check for updates. If an update is found, Malwarebytes will update itself.

  • After the update, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. In your case this includes: Bitdefender, Windows Defender, Ad-aware.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

In your next reply, post the following:

Well, we have finally hit a snag. The Malwarebytes log will not open and Combofix gives me the following error message: "Error - Win32 Only Incompatible OS. Combofix only works for workstations with Windows 2000 and XP".

When I ran the Malwarebytes scan, it removed three trojans that it found.

I have Windows XP, but am not surprised that it is not recognized by Combofix since so many of the Windows "window dressing" features are missing.

Are there any other options to get Combofix to run? Thanks!

Could you explain further by what you met with the "window dressing" features missing.

  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file and post it in your next reply.

By "windows dressing" I just meant that when I log onto the computer, the nice windows screen with icons for each user is missing. Now I just get a simple logon box where we have to type the user name.

As always, thanks so much for your help! Following is the log from the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool.

Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file, it is completely safe.
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • When finished DDS.txt will open
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open
  • Post DDS.txt and Attach.txt
--------------------------------------------------

Download RootRepeal.zip and unzip it to your Desktop.

  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Clickthe Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan

The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File, then Exit to close the program

When I tried to run DDS, I got the following DOS prompt:

"This tool does not support your Operating System. The system cannot find text for message number 0x232b in the message file for Application."

Following is the RootRepeal report. Thanks once again!
